The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Well Johnny, in all of my Red Sea adventures, I had the opportunity to dive, on many occasions, with one of Hans Hass' protégés, Juergen Schmitt, very accomplished uw stills guy. One of the nuggets of wisdom to come out of that was, " Tauchen macht dumm und taub".

Literally translated as, diving makes you dumb and deaf. Clever folks, those Germans.

Now I understand what happened to me....

I just uploaded Aquaterrafilms 2013 demo reel to my Vimeo Channel.
It is the first of a few demos in the works.
Here is the link.

https://vimeo.com/78230976

All sequences shot on with Red Scarlet/ Amphibico Rouge and Light and Motion SOla 4000 / 2000
This demo (with minor changes) will be showing at the Amphibico booth at DEMA.

I will be roaming the floor at DEMA and would love to meet as many of you as possible-
Maybe we should set a night for all of us to get together as it seems there are a few of us going?

Thanks for watching! MH

Mauricio,

Looks good, but I will say that, as with every other piece you have posted, the quality is too low and does disservice to the footage. I don't know what program you use to encode your exports, but whichever it is, you should experiment a bit more so you can upload higher quality to vimeo and allow the re-rendered Vimeo piece to look better. Right now, that stuff looks terrible, quality wise. If you use Adobe, the Media Encoder has settings for Vimeo that work quite well. Other than that, nice images, good framing and editing. But in thiss brave new world, good skill underwater is nothing without media management savvy.

Just my two tiny, rusty pennies by way of constructive criticism,

Hi Mauricio,
I will echo Rudi's same constructive criticism. Looks beautiful, but need to render out a better quality master...if at dema, stop by and we can go over some different methods...maybe bring your original R3d's and we can try an experiment. Those images and edit are too good to show a low quality output file.
Maybe layout here how you are doing your outputs: what program are you editing with and the procedure...then maybe we can give some advise for a better render out.

Very nice animal sequences Mauricio, Sperm whales are tough to get. Would have shot the macro horses at HFR, 48 or even 96 fps, but otherwise nicely done. Looking forward to some beers with you and all the other criminals on this thread at DEMA, should be a blast. Tom

Excellent advise Rudy and Johnny- I cannot agree more with you both- thank you for your constructive criticism - I would love to crack this nut!
I am a computer geek but need to work on this one more.... any help welcome!

These are my steps:
Acquire R3d's (Scarlet) then basic color correction in Redcine X pro
In this case I had many clips already transcoded so I did the same- Proress 422 1980 x 1020 clips were done with Redcine-X pro (v 20.1)
Import Clips to FCX and edit using these already transcoded clips - files, edited piece etc look crisp at this point.

Vimeo- I have a Vimeo Pro account
After a few bad attempts a few months ago- I took the advise of another fellow shooter and decided to upload to vimeo directly from FCX
Steps: After finished piece in FCX I go directly to File- Share- Vimeo (links to my pro account).
Settings are : HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) Compression is better quality (over upload speed) and that is that.

I originally tried sending to compressor with worst results...

Any thoughts?
I agree 100% that the compression at my end and at Vimeo are killing my sequences...... I want them to look as they deserve.

I have reviewed the criteria at Vimeos end as well as options on my end... all seem good then - it looks terrible when uploaded (after a a few hours of upload time).

Thoughts?

Johnny- I will take the computer with all set to test if you have time that would be great.

Many thanks -awaiting your reply.
best
M

I am (in this case) editing using transcoded proress clips in FCX then when piece is finished it is exported directly to Vimeo.

Thanks TOm- I was shooting with Scarlet - no can do those high speed options... one more month then upgrade path in place.
I will indeed see you there.
MH

Hi guys!

For me it is still the lack of light a problem bigger than the magenta color. I'm not usually able to shoot deeper than 30 meters at ISO 800 or lower.

HDRx? Had anybody used this option for extended dynamic range when the situation calls for it…from 2 to 6 stops over native by preset???

Hey guys, I'm looking into the cost of renting an underwater housing for an Epic in Florida (I own the camera). Would be shooting in shallow freshwater. If you can PM me rates and info that would be great!

Hello Tehben,

There are several Gates customers with kit for hire around the US, and their services as well:

http://www.gateshousings.com/housings/rental-video-housings/

As pointed out in the other thread, it is highly recommended that you hire an experienced underwater cameraman with their own kit. Frazier Nivens (w/Aquavideo) and Rudi Castinyeri (DEEP RED) are both in Florida and active on this forum. Mike Hastings (owner of AquaVideo) is there, too.

Lastly, if you can't arrange a hire from one of my customers, we have a kit available here at Gates.

J-
