Looking at buying some new red one camera batteries..the red batteries by the time they are shipped from the usa to canada plus duty fees are over $500.00 each...I have looked at B&h photo.. again shipping..in Toronto I can get 98 and 130 wh switronix batteries...any thoughts on the quality of these for my Red camera...thanks

I understand that Globalmediapro batteries are a commonly used cheap alternative for Red Bricks. I've used a set of rented Switronix V-locks on a Scarlet-X with no problems.

Hi Jim

Blueshape is another company worth checking out. They're made in malta. Same as the red bricks. Two battery companies in one itsy-bitsy country? I doubt it. ie, they're the same thing. . . .

Dealer in TO:
Katamount Enterprises Incorporated
1545 The Queensway
Toronto, Ontario
M8Z 1T8
Canada
Tel: +1 (416) 259-3527
Fax: +1 (416) 259-1947

I've had great luck (?) with the ebay / Hong Kong version of the Global Media Pro V-Mounts. Reasonable pricing, and so far good quality.

Don't have them in front of me, someone will jump in with the name or a link to other threads here where they are discussed.

Interestingly their site states that they repair Red batteries and chargers...me thinks you are correct, same factory. I'll have to contact them as I have 3 Red batteries that are not passing power, but upon testing internally on the board are showing a charge.

Jim, I'm also in Toronto and looking for a good deal on V-mounts. I've got a total of 7 Red batteries (including the 3 that don't work) but none can power the camera for more than an hour.

Hi Jim,

I think these are the ones that Glen is talking about. I bought these from this company 3 times and never had any issues. The cost has gone up but still fairly inexpensive. The best part is that 2 of the 3 times, I didn't get any duty on them from Canada Post. Yes, they shipped them through snail mail (still trackable but it took 2-3 weeks to arrive).

I know a lot of folks on Reduser that bought these. There is also an old thread that might help:

Anyhow, good luck on your choice.

Thanks Will, those are the ones - I didn't pay duty / taxes on them either...

I would like somebody to make it possible to mount Bosch screwdriver 14,5 V li ion bats on the camera. Those comes for hardly any money and are so low weight it's crazy.

Can not be that hard to make a mount/plate for them and then we could just use the Bosch charger.

Heh, if someone makes a powertool battery adapter, I'll buy one :D

It can not be that tricky I think A drill with a super powerful battery cost like 120USD. I do not know how intelligent those batteries are. As they got 4 connectors. but I guess some where up in the handle of the drill there is a chip that controls the battery level and all that. So basically buy a set take it apart, and make a nice plate holding the control ship from the drill handle.....

Even if someone did make it, would you risk it though? I'd be tempted to see this happen though.

Back to the original post, this is what I use as an alternative. They have a nice soft rubber feel to it and last approx 2 hrs.

Doug at Long Valley made a 4pin to Dewalt adapter years ago for SRs.. I recall him saying that the R1 drew too much power for a single tool battery to be useful in driving it. Maybe he'll feel like giving his input here again..

Hay Ron..no answer at phones.. question..new with the redone mx..hooked up cheap microphone todaymessed with menu in manual..new battery in mike..no sound nothing..any thoughts.jim kozmik

Hey Jim, I'm relatively new to R1 as well and have not tried to record sound to it yet, sorry.

Just booting up a R1 would probably kill a Dewalt battery, or rather drop it below required voltage to keep a camera running. That's the trick with these batteries is that they're able to maintain over the required 12v for an extend period of time while draining the battery. Think of a dimming flashlight. An old battery will drop voltage quickly but still be mostly charged.

I agree batteries feel excessively priced. I had some cells replaced in a AB Hytron and it was close to 100 bucks just for the new cells. I'd say the rebuild worked OK but didn't work as well as a new battery IMHO, but that could have been the ability of the builder. I've seen videos on DIY cell replacement (not RED Bricks) and it looks doable if you're good with a soldering iron.

V mount is the best way to go for a decent battery life. other wise you will be lucky to get 30 mins from a brick. My 2 cents!

Its not the mount, its the discharge performance of the cells in the battery case that matter. Though, I do find that the three stud mounting system is more likely to stay locked on than the V mount.

and yeah, I thought my AB dionics were expensive.. until a few years later when they still work perfectly despite several drops to the ground while running around on set.

the cases are so much more rugged than budget branded ones in either stud or v mount.

There are several rugged competitors to AB.. and they cost about the same as an AB battery

Jimmy, I think the problem you are having may have to do with the discharge rate on the chemistry inside your batteries.

Li Ion batteries seem to give me better results than NiMH and Nicad, due to a more favorable power discharge curve. Maybe your rebuilder cut corners on the internal cells?

I can install all new cells in the RED bricks and bring them back to an as new condition, cost is $230.00ea return shipping in the US is free international is at cost.
