Hey guys,

I'm currently help finish a project we shot in Panama last year. We shot a large amount of underwater shots, but did miss a few opportunities. Searching around on all the red stock footage sites I could find, nothing is coming close to what we need. I thought I'd quietly barge into this thread and see if you had any leads or happened to have something I could use for the project.

- I really need a bubbles rising shot from a basically static camera, very simple, but we need a 13 second shot of all usable bubbles.
- Hammerhead sharks circling above. Man, no one has a 4k or 5k shot of this, and we really need it.

I probably have a few of those...but have with more animals....here's a quick grab. Have several more from Galapagos...but hard to find any with only one or two sharks...

A "herd" or group of them is perfectly fine! We just need looking straight up, with(hopefully) the sun in the shot.

Maybe others have the exact shot...i have similar and would have to go through another batch...but here's one i found from a shoot several years ago @ 4k.....sun in corner. Direct shots of sun on RED were tough on the sensor so i have avoided those if at all possible...they tend to turn purple.....

That one does look very similar to what we want, and I do understand the purple overexposing, I'm dealing with fixing that quite a bit a in Resolve.

Do you have any low res .mov's of those shots we can take a look at?

Zac, i'll respond to you via email with my rate card and other info....I'm tyrying to think if i know of anyone else with 4k hammerhead footage (shot you desire)....but none come to mind, but i'm sure if anyone here has it, they will be in touch....

Hi all,
I have an upcoming shoot where I am to film people at night interacting with glowing algae. The people will be on a boat and it will be an above water shoot. I will be using an Epic with not sure of lens yet, hopefully some primes around t2, 800 - 1000iso range. The shoot will be happening off the coast of Oman. Searching the web has not given me any great info on the light output of clustered glowing algae as yet but if anyone knows of any interesting links I would much appreciate it, also testing in location is too difficult due to distance.

The question I have as I have only seen glowing algae never shot it, will it be possible to register the glow on camera? Are there any tips to help add to the glow eg: underwater side/ back light possibly adding more glow to the algae ? I'm thinking diving torch with spun or diffusion a metre or two under water.

I understand the algae needs to be agitated in order for it to glow, any advise for this eg: splashing water with paddle, quick blast of out board engine ?

Also I would like to add some light to the characters just to make them out using light panels at a low dim setting, would this interfere / overpower the algae glow.

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and experiences on this subject.

Sounds like you want the beauty without the suffering :-): filming bioluminiscence is one of the hardest things there are, BUT, it can be done. First off, the starlight cameras are not even HD resolution and color reproduction is horrible, so you'd probably want to stay away from those since you'd record people's faces but the not the algae glow. I did film some bioluminescence scenes a few years ago, and here's what I can tell you:

- You'll need a very sensitive camera. We used F900s, which have a noise floor comparable to Epic, maybe the Epic is 1/2 stop better. Epic would do the trick, but an F65 or F55 would be better, though they are bigger and not as easy to move close to, around, and barely above the water. Epic would be the best compromise in terms of portability and sensitivity.
- You WILL need lights. The glow of the algae registers, I forgot what it was in DB, but the equivalent to about 8000 ASA, at 1-2 ft from the water surface, so if you want to illuminate actors' faces with the glow, you'll have to have them that close to the water AND you'll need some additional lights. Back then, we used some underwater torches with cyan gel, and a diver held them among the algae about a foot under the surface, while he was running his fingers over the light to mimic the ripple effect of the water.
- You will also need lights on the boat, especially if you plan to shoot any master shots including the boat among the algae. Digital sensors are very good in low light BUT they need a few sources spread throughout the frame so you can minimize noise and abnormal color reproductions. The piece we were filming was an 1800s period drama so we had two oil lanterns on the boat, and that was enough to illuminate the boat and the actors while still allowing the glow in the water to register. It was also a nice contrast between the blue/green of the algae and the orange of the lanterns. You can of course use whatever practicals suit your piece but I strongly recommend some light onboard or you'll be in noise city.

question ..I remember someone saying they use a plus1 or plus 2..diopter on tokina 11-16mm lense..sharpens image..anybody ever due this...Question 2..what is the best longest playing v type battery for redone in housing..anyone ever buy and use global mediabatteries..yhanks.koz
