  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There's the MP 150mm T1.3

A long shot, but… anyone know anything comparable or even faster in the 150-200mm focal length range?

I've been scratching my head and can't come up with anything. Doesn't matter how rare or exotic so long as I can rent it, somewhere.

There were some suggestions in this thread:

What T stop would the 150 master prime be with a teleconverter?
 
Tricky battle there as the depth of field wide open is razor thin. I'm real into the Panavision 150 T1.9, but I don't know if that's fast enough for you. It's also a big hunk of lens.

I've seen you hunting for a Canon 200mm f/1.8L and there's a few modded ones out there you can rent. You can find those at a few rental houses out here, but in the NZ I have no idea.

There's several 135mm f/1.8s that have come out in the past. Sigmatel comes to mind. Hard to find a good one though.
 
@Chad - I've also seen a 180mm f/1.3 Zoomatar pop up in the past. Rare.

Interesting and many thanks, Phil & Chad. These are the kind of suggestions I was hoping for; bring it on!

DoF isn't a big deal; I could handle a lens with fixed infinity focus for aerial photography. The application is a job shooting volcanic eruptions at night from a safe distance!

If you look closely that's an *x-ray* lens.

It won't focus further than few inches and image quality is likely…. interesting!

Rayxar 50mmm f/0.75 x-ray lenses also sometimes come up.

I just bought an Optex PL conversion of the legendary Canon FD 200mm f/1.8. So that's my default option for longer than the 150 T1.3 Master Prime. I was hoping to stumble across something more obscure, faster than the Canon/Optex in the 150-200 range.

Ok that's not the answer you were looking for, but maybe using a Dragon body could also help you solve your light problem.

I'm sure if you pitch a volcano eruption to Jarred he might let you use one for that particular gig. After all a Dragon needs flames!
 
BTW does anybody know if there's a longer tele of the Leica Summilux-C planned? or is the set completed and won't be touched anymore?

For sure Dragon is the way to go; a full moon will also be a big help. I'm trying to shoot explosions at night, in the pitch black, and trying to get some kind of texture and detail in the areas outside the 'flames' without descending too far into the noise floor. Also a fast enough system will open the possibility of overcranking.

I ordered Dragon upgrade as soon as it became available, but it looks like the volcano is going to beat RED to the punch, and I may have to go with what I have... and I don't think I'm well enough known or good enough buddies with RED to go asking for favours!

That shouldn't stop you! Just do it! And the fire analogy does help ;)

Enclose some of your best frame grabs and maybe something you're aiming for along with what the planned shoot will be and pitch it to Brent or Jarred.
Nothing worse than "sorry we can't help you out on this one" will happen. And if this shoot is important to you - which seems to me like it is, if you're going through such a big effort to find the perfect lens - throwing out a short "interested?" email to the man is not a big deal ;)

Thanks Patrick… well this is an ungraded frame grab, before noise reduction, from my last visit to Sakurajima:

200mm f/2.8 (the best I had with me), wide open, 1600 ISO, 360 shutter, pitch black, histogram hard left… and I'm in deep in the noise as you can see. Moonlight, Dragon, and fast glass, this shot will blow your socks off.

Here's some surveillance camera footage of what I'm trying to capture in 4K:


I get a LOT closer than the surveillance camera :-)

What's the deal with the lightning? It seems that this is normal during an eruption?

Did you write that pitch yet? ;) go for it, man! This is not your everyday skin tone test! Do it!!! Or I'll have to do it for you ;)
