  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The group buy model is a better setup vs the one a bought. Thicker post, 15mm rods on the base, breakout box for cables, better docking stand. However, the GB model also cost a bit more. I had a machine shop modify my base to use 15mm rods and create two heavy battery plates to replace the round weights.
 
I have experienced both models. The 2-15kg model has a different arm, smaller gimble, smaller fitting vest, different top plate, no wires or plugs built in. That being said, I modified it and shot a feature with it over 3 months. It was awesome. I then purchased my own (the one I shot this test with) again, straight from eBay. It has the biggest gimble, a stronger bigger arm, a much bigger fitting vest (to my dismay), built in cables and plugs, a vmount plate, a bigger stronger docking plate, 15mm rods and a monitor arm at the base, levels and the thicker gimble thing. It cost me just over $1000 delivered. It "came" in 5 days. It also came in a case with wheels. Joey, the guy I spoke with was very helpful.

The difference between the two models in terms of capability is very little. Yes this model is easier to get going because it comes pre wired etc. But as for actually flying the Scarlet rig (vmount and samurai down below, scarlet, 24mm nikkor, Schneider ND, proaim mattebox, redrock wireless follow focus, zacuto base plate, red touch 5", wireless transmitter, 5v 1.2amp battery for transmitter, red mag) up top, there is very little difference.

It is however, maxed out. Any more weight and it's almost at lowest boom, so again, a red one rig would be no good n my opinion.

It's so cheap that I honestly feel like there is no room for complaint. It works, and with practice, patience, and knowledge of how a stabiliser works, it works well.

I searched for it again on eBay and couldn't find my exact model.... They come how they come.... Different every time? With different configurations?

Amongst all this, it's important to know that I am yet to achieve dynamic balance. I can balance it well enough to fly, but yeah. I think it's a case of user error but I'll be blogging about it in more detail after this film.

Ready to pull the trigger on this... My question for you guys, is how do you power the camera? Does the sled have a lemo cable built into it or do I need to run one separate if I put a Vmount on the battery dock on the sled?

The group buy rigs come have a Vmount plate with lemo cable on the end, this is either pluged into the box or run through the hollow center of the sled. Not sure about the eBay ones but I'm sure you could ask for one. To answer your question, you could run your own.

i have just ordered a rig and intend to fly a Red One. I believe you can have stiffer springs put into the arm, this is why in the group buy they ask you to confirm your camera. Hopefully it works, I know people have done it. I will confirm when it arrives.
 
With Epic/Scarlet and canon EF lenses I'm getting best results with one battery on camera and a second battery on the base.

Bottom battery runs monitor, wireless transmitter, Bartech receiver / servo. Camera mounted battery powers camera only. However, I do have a Red Lemo cable run from the base battery plate to the camera, so I can power that way as well. I've been experimenting with different builds based on the lens size and shot. Also, running all of the items listed off one Dionic HC is very high amps, I've found I need at least two batteries on board to have decent run times and to keep the batteries happy.

Bottom batteries replaces the annoying round counter weights.

Chris McKechnie in OC... I'm planning to sell my rig in 1+ weeks, as I was part of the Proline group buy, which is supposed to ship soon. Free setup and training included! I'll post pictures next time the rig is built.
 
I ordered this one a couple of days ago as well. $950cdn with shipping. I have been wanting to for a while, and at this price it was hard to say no. Looks like the price dropped $50 since I ordered last Friday as well. This version looks promising. Should be here in about a week.

Here is my modified Laing - Came setup.

The block which attaches the rods to post is adjustable on the x-axis which helps to bring the base into level, I did this to compensate for cables and aks running off center line.

One vertical and one horizontal battery plate. The battery plates are thick to add weight. I had planned to machine them down, but the weight is right as is, for my current setup. A second Dionic is added to the vertical plate when flying with Red Primes, Mattebox, Bartech.

Power, rear plate has a Epic / Scarlet Lemo cable which runs up the post. Paralinx and SDI Converter are powered off 5V converters, one of which is installed inside the rear battery plate.

SDI Converter feeds Paralinx, HDMI run is for monitor.

Not pictured is the Bartech receiver, which I mount on the camera and power from the camera battery.

Took the plunge but I bought the came steadicam too. 800 bucks plus shipping. Had them add the docking plate, order a v-mount plate. Waiting to get it so I can test it out but exicted to use it and hope it's as good as everyone is saying. If so, I guess I'll need more bricks and order a wireless follow focus and wireless video.
