  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve 10 Beta

OK, I was confused, since your reply was in context to Luis talking about the OFX effects and 95% compatibility. So what about the other effects? Right now I can only assume that "editorial effects" is really only talking about dissolves and speed ramps, which is not very compatible with most complex offlines. Any sense of that yet?

The beta is not complete. So what I would say is that Blackmagic seems very intent on making it a very viable and complete conform/finishing product. They are closer to that with Final Cut X than they are with Avid at this point. But my guess is that they will get there with both.

I recently became a dealer for Blackmagic (primarily for the cameras - which we make underwater housings for) and the recent price drop of the original cinema camera to $1995 has made it even more attractive since you also get a full license to resolve with dongle. My distributor rep says he believes that if we purchase now we will be entitled to free upgrade to v10 but haven't had a chance to ask BMD directly.

Does anyone know if that is the case?

Everyone gets a free upgrade to 10. That has been Blackmagic's policy since their original purchase of DaVinci, and it is their announced policy for version 10. All new versions are downloads from their support site, and only require a dongle to work. The dongle can be one that was issued for any version of Resolve from 7 on up.

As far as first impressions go, I love the new interface icons and color scheme. So glad that Contrast and Pivot are on Primaries page now. I'm interested to see how the Color Space open in the node tree can be of use. ANd the noise reduction seems to be much improved.

I definitely like that they added Contrast and Pivot to The Element Panel, but I was anticipating a much more dramatic change.

***Edit***
I just tried Sapphire... it works well. Resolve recognizes it natively with no additional setup.

Just to clarify: that is in the on-screen controls. Trackball support for offset is only available in the DaVinci panels.

The panel mappings for the MC Color panel have also been substantially improved, with things like contrast and pivot now included on knob controls, and much more logical and direct groupings of controls. I think they've done an excellent job of providing a lot of useful things (along with more efficiency) on third party panels that weren't there before, while still retaining the advantages of using the DaVinci panel set. That's a rather delicate balance, and they've done it nicely.

I really like the new split screen modes (they appear on both the interface and the output monitor), the gradient power windows (that's their version of "edge windows", like you have on Baselight, and works very well with the ability to have multiple windows in one node) the Lightbox being available on the SDI output, and the presence of "last correction" and "two corrections back" buttons on the keyboard (finally! these things were previously available only on the DaVinci panel set).. If you happen to use Final Cut Pro X, you'll likely find a lot to like as that support has been enhanced to include things like titles coming across (yes, Resolve 10 has a titling tool) and, in the latest beta, support for compound clips.

thansk for the info!

Have they improved the HSL qualifier to be less noise prone? I've done HSL on other platforms that offered blur-choke, and it's super fast and easy to pick colors without getting "blur halos" (thats' what the choke is for) and that don't fritter with noise (because the blur is of sufficient quality) , whereas on DaVinci this has always been a pain and/or impossible with some footage. I've mentioned this to BM, and they said "well this or that big movie was graded with davinci", neglecting to mention that if a strong HSL-limited correction was required on those projects and it proved problematic, they had a guy in the next room make a matte in an external software. Thats' what we do too, but it's time-consuming, and requires back-and-forth. Seems to me functional "matte-choke" is not rocket science, and would be way more useful than "grow-shrink" which is so weird even their own official manual makes no attempt to explain it.

I wish more software developers focussed on fixing basic functionality, rather than always adding new bells and whistles while the core functionality remains highly flawed

I'm also really loving the Paste Tracking Data feature... huge time saver!

Does this mean the Premiere CC workflow will carry things like frame scaling and rotation? I tend to use both, but these required manual conform in Resolve in my previous experiment.

Thanks for mentioning this Rob. I was dealing with this very issue two days ago and thought I was losing my mind.

Thanks, Mike for the clarification. And Phil Holland posted this on the other thread:

On their website and in the launch press release published April 8, 2013:

Availability and Price
DaVinci Resolve 10 will be available Q3 2013 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide and will be a free upgrade for existing DaVinci Resolve customers.

I just finished an underwater housing for the 2.5K original BMD cinema camera and dove for the first time with it yesterday. Was quite impressed with the picture quality - now I need to learn resolve to get the most out of it!

I mentioned this in another thread, but I have to admit that I am not that impressed with the new mapping for the Tangent Element in V10Beta. I was really expecting something more... The improvements are welcomed and I'm thankful for them, especially contrast and pivot, but overall it still leaves something to be desired.

The mapping particularly stands out for me because I started learning/using Speedgrade with the release of CC which brought support for the Element. I have to say that the Element mapping for Speedgrade is very intuitive, well thought out and user friendly and the difference is very apparent. Resolve is my platform of choice, but I wish BMD would put a little more thought into their 3rd party panel mappings... or even better, allow for custom mapping.

I could-can never get the xml roundtripping to work correctly for me in v9 and have resorted to exporting a flattened quicktime from PPro and using scene detection in Resolve. If the new editing features are versatile enough, that will be THE reason I drop other NLE's and use Resolve exclusively. Doubt however I'll be dropping After Effects in my post work for a long long time.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed with element mapping too. It's actually a little clunkier to me if that's even possible. But greatful for contrast pivot. Hopefully it's still in beta stage as they've got a lot on their plate with this one. Fingers crossed for final ver.

1. Although XML roundtrip from PPro is not as robust as from FCP or FCPX, it still works very well.
2. Even, if you can't figure out the XML route and decided, that flattening QT works better for you, there is still no reason not to use the EDL for notching your scenes in Resolve. It's just so much faster and way more precise, than using scene detection.

Jake,

Agree with you with #2. This is one of the areas (Scene Detection) that I suggest BMD should spend a bit more time in order to bring it up to par with the SO reliable Power Window tracking. That tracking has been for me so reliable and a time saver big time!
:nopity:

What is everyones preferred basic noise reduction settings in version 10? I'm used to Neat Video so curious what your opinions are after playing with it. I seem to just move the numbers until the footage looks clean and maintains sharpness, but curious what the best workflow is and optimal settings. Do you prefer temporal or spatial or a combination of the two?
