  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Upgrades ...

Off label...

Off label...

I think I see where you're going Antony, just be aware that the .RED encoded files use a compression/decompression scheme designed for high quality at a low bit rate, that is a different design target than a codec designed for snappy performance in editorial. FWIW, the latest versions of FCP-X allow for the creation of proxies from R3Ds that are engineered with a bias for high performance in editorial activities that I highly recommend you test vs any .RED based scheme.

I can see where a .RED based repository of footage accessible for review and logging might be a great resource for creatives collaborating on a project. The methodology for working with .RED material in ways besides distribution might turn out to be more robust than we know at this point. If you try this approach, please report back how it works out for you, I'm genuinely curious.

Cheers - #19

Can't imagine many people needing more than 40 TB ....and now you can edit anywhere.

Antony, I think you have a great idea but the problem is that currently, .RED files take a very long time to encode and like Blair said there's no fast decompression scheme outside of the REDRay player to play them period much less for any other purpose. You'd be better off taking your new super trick MacPro, GPU speeds and a rocket to crunch your library into any QT file(s) you need complete w metadata database to see your footage from whatever cloud solution works for your setup. Best part is, almost all of that is avail now or has been announced and is imminent.

def stoked to see what you come up with.

but remember Epic-M's get priority on the sensors right now until the yields improve.
As an M owner who put his name down on the 8th April, I'm trying to juggle my bookings diary with upgrade expectations right now, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. :-)
Any chance you could share with us the current anticipated conversion rate, please?

Yeah, same issue here. Also, on a related note, I'd like to ask if it might be possible to choose which camera to upgrade first if we have several eligible for upgrades? For example, I have an EPIC-M and a stage two EPIC-X but the X is still out on a job and I have a rental starting early next week, so I might have to send out the M for that. If I get the call to upgrade my M, could I also send in my X instead and upgrade the M in the "slot" for the X?

I hope my thinking here isn't too damn confusing... ;-)

Yeah we are cancelling the Scarlet Dragon and the Scarlet Dragon upgrade program.. The image from our Scarlet Dragon prototypes are just too good for the price, and our adult supervision has declared that it doesn't make much business sense. We are experimenting with sandblasting the sensor glass to lower the image quality and should know if it could possibly be a viable option as an alternate plan in a few months.

Heh heh.. just kidding. Scarlet Dragon upgrade program is still alive and kicking... but remember Epic-M's get priority on the sensors right now until the yields improve.

My Yarbles almost fell off after reading that first sentence and I nearly went on a ultraviolent rampage. I viddied that the ol' in out might become a bit of a challenge, and my guttiwuts started to feel a bit warbled. Allas I read on and realize that the life of an enoch is not to be had and things become happily blissfull again. :nads:

I was told at NAB same readout speed as Epic.

Dragon read/reset is nearly twice as fast as the MX sensor. That's info that has come forth since NAB and is in the more recent postings from Jim and Jarred.

What is the exact read/reset number?

Does read/reset help with rolling shutter issues?

Faster the read times - less rolling shutter issues. If Dragon is in fact twice faster than MX, then it would look great most of the time. For everything else like strobes there is Red's Motion Mount, which will do the trick and more, like dialing NDs electronically in-camera and (if I read it correctly) smooth motion Tessive-like filter. I'm sure at one point comparison tests of Dragon and cameras with mechanical and electronic global shutters will appear online. I for one look forward to whip pan tests.

Wow. Didn't know. Hope Scarlet Dragon gets comparatively similar boost
