Hello, I'm trying to media management a feature film. The project is over and I'd like to trim the r3d files and store in a external hard disk. They are about 960 clips. Resolve has problems to trimming all together. I have to trim 20/30 at the times or it stuck. Red cine x works fine and it's able to trimming all together with no problems. The issue is Davinci can't see some files, no matter settings I put in the conform preferences of the project. The clips imported are black or I can see them in the viewer or media pool but not in the timeline conformed with xml. It looks Resolve sees them as folders and not as clips. The ones Resolve can't see are the one with the extension S001(for example B002_C005_0901GN_S000.RDC, B002_C005_0901GN_S001.RDC, B002_C005_0901GN_S003.RDC etc. ).
I'm using resolve 9.1.4
Thanks!

Peter? Anyone?

I think the round trip has to be :

- importing XML to RCX
- trimming in RCX
- exporting the new XML that contains the new R3D trimmed clip names
- and then import this new XML to Resolve and relink.

Pat

Exactly but Resolve doesn't recognize all the trimmed clips from rcx so you have to be very creative :)

Don't you have to reexport the new RCX XML from the Trimmed timeline you created so that they can reconnect to the new r3d names?

Pat

Sorry Luca, but the way you're trying to use consolidated trimmed R3Ds is incorrect. You need to do the trims from conformed timeline to the folder first. BTW, I never had a problem doing that in Resolve. May be I'm just lucky:-)
Then you need to use the command "re-conform from bins" instead of trying to do a new conform from the XML. It will not work, as you found out yourself. You can also use command "import additional clips with tight filename match". It should work as well, but I haven't personally done it. Here is the big gotcha. You MUST do the consolidation BEFORE grading. If you do it after, you will be able to re-conform from the new folder, but your grades will not come through, if you use local grades. Using ColorTrace doesn't work as either, as metadata doesn't copy over too. Kinda makes Colortrace pretty useless with any metadata type of material. So, if you do it correctly, R3D consolidation works great, well... at least it does for me:-)

Hi Jake, thanks for your reply. Reading the manual I notice that you have to do the conforming and trimming before grading, the problem is when you have already done a project and you want to archive it. For the next projects I'll do the conform and trim before grading but I think the possibility to trim after you have finished your project is very important and I hope the development team of resolve will think about it. I used colortrace to transfer my color correction to the new trimmed project and it works fine but it copied only the nodes and not the r3d settings, as you said.
Is there a way to transfer all the raw settings to a new project?

Sorry if not exactly the subject but all of you seem expert about trim;
my concern is when I export re3d trim files, the sound is a distinct file, could I export with audio embedded ?

Question, XML's are good but sometimes they bring a little bit more info than asked for causing "none match" etc. So sugestion if you instead export an EDL from Resolve that you import into RCXP and from there consolidate your material using the r3d trim function.... I think that would get you around the trouble as edl's are timecode only and do not care much for filenames if wanted.

Thank you Björn. I'll try with edl but I'd like a more automated workflow :)

Not that I'm aware of. And it's not just the R3D metadata, that doesn't get transferred with the Colortrace. The same goes for the Arri. But if you use remote grades, it should work with "reconform from bins" command, like i described earlier and then just save the project with your trimmed folder. There is absolutely no need to use the XML or EDL or AAF.

In rcx in the red trim export window there's an option to export audio.

Thanks, I'll try it!

Thank you, I see this but when exported, the sound becomes a separate .wav file, would you know a way of exporting
a red trimmed file video + audio in one file as it comes out from the camera ?

Hey guys, I tried to use the "reconform from bins" method but it didn't work. There's something wrong that I can't detect and I don't have the time also. So my solution was to media management all files, my project was 5 terabyte, now it's 3,5. I deleted movies, render files, after effects dpx files, etc. that weren't used and I copied all (including all the consolidated r3d files not trimmed) into two hard disk of 2 tera each. Than I used the command "change source folder" and everything it's in place, including color correction and metadata. It doesn't solve the trimming issue but I need space for another upcoming project.

Can you be a little more specific about what didn't work? I used that command and it worked fine for me. It's the color grading information, that get's lost, otherwise it works. That's why trimming needs to be done before grading.

Color grading information got lost, speed changes didn't get through, they were replaced by only one frame spanned to the entire clip and Resolve replaced some clips here and there with different (wrong) clips. I repeat, I tried to do it after the grading to archive the project.
