  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ATOMOS Samurai Blade review

Are there any good recommendations over the Blade that is in the same price range and perform similar functions at high quality and HD monitoring? Looking for alternates and any reviews about the Blade before investing. Most reviews I read were about the functionality.

Someone also mentioned Odyssey.. but I feel safer with the Blade.. I would definitely like the monitor and recorder in same that way I can use the RED touch and the AC can use the blade. Fewer items on the rig.

I should receive one for review shortly. I will put it through the paces and post my feedback. Hopefully within the next 1-2 weeks.

Oh and if there is anything you guys want me to do specifically, let me know.

Chris, where did you order yours from? It looks like the item is not available to ship immediately but on pre-order at various online stores.

Mine is a review unit. I should have it late next week (crossing fingers) as they are still ironing out things. Eager to test!

I see. Wish they were available for immediate order. I have a feature coming up where I would like to use it. Although Atomos site says blade is shipping now!

Update: I talked with Atomos and they confirmed that the Blade has options to generate exact same file names as your RED. So, offline to online should be pretty straight forward.

Ayan,

That may be true but strangely enough I was talking to engineers from Atomos yesterday about this issue and there was some confusion about the file naming protocol and they were not sure they could do an exact mirror of the Red file names. Good news if this is correct.

Hope its true. The sales agent was confident that the file names will be exact copy. Worst case, the metadata will be tracked and we just have to remove the single digit if it adds it. Also, even though it transcodes real time, there is still an IMPORT or AMA process with the Media Composer. However, they are saying that it will be very fast, just copying and rewrapping vs transcoding from scratch. Ordered mine today with a WD 700GB hard disk.. let's see.

Literally just unboxed mine. It's my first time buying an atomos product. The monitor is sturdy and feels good in your hands. What I don't like is the cheap accessories it comes with. I wanted to run it off a dtap and the damn thing comes with a dtap battery adaptor but no male to male cable. That's such a dumb thing to omit. SMH

Yeah those male to male are not that common, but can easily be made. Btw, those batteries will power the blade for a good chunk of the day.

Looks like they have pulled all allocation for review/demo purposes...maybe something they are fixing? If I ever get one, I'll be sure to post my feedback, though not something I would purchase at the moment since most of my clients work with R3D's natively.

Just got my Blade yesterday. First impressions are super solid. The screen is fantastic and seems to match the Red 5" touch really well. User interface is extremely intuitive and it communicates with my Epic seamlessly. I should be able to test it in the field next week.

I can second that, received my unit today, very light and solid design. The drive caddies and the drive reader are pretty flimsy though, but apart from that I am really impressed so far. Will give this baby a good test this week and post here.

Is anyone of you guys working in a 25fps timebase ?

for some reason even though my epic is set to a 25fps timebase project...my blade receives a 1080p24 signal....is that the only way the epic can output ? or can it do 25p over HD/SDI too ?

Any body that got theirs and are familiar with the pix 240. I know the pix probably beats the ninja on audio. But what about monitor preformance and such?

I'm thinking of getting two of these and use them with our bolt recivers. Basically have one for the focus puller and one for the director. So my concern is the picture quality to pull focus from as one would be attach to the wireless FF and the other would need proper sound in so the director can have the sound guys feed coming in. Then the pix240 has proper XLRs but that one is also quite bulky.

So what is your preference on this new ninja vs the pix240?

I will not use the files more than for rough on set cuts and such so I do not care much for high bitrate or any such thing, on the contrary a proress proxy 8bit is preferred.
