  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Correct Russ, they will be a Half and a Quarter of the current Area 48 model.

This is in early stages of development, but there is no date on when they'll become a reality, and yes, once they'll pop those out, I'll make a Group Buy for them as well... ;)

So for now those interested in the Area 48 that missed this first run, or want more, let me know here, and I'll see to start a second run at this Group Buy, which I believe it should be just about to get done delivering all units to current participants.

Oh yea, don't be shy share your opinion on the units received and if you got any share some Frame grabs too.

The opinions we like will be shared on BB&S website... ;)

Hey Ketch, I'm definitely in for one Area 48. I saw one at Alex Buono's workshop and it's an incredible light! Thanks for organizing this.

Othello

I'm interested too. In the 2nd group buy.

Jochen

Good to know, keep posting guys, the more of you I know are interested and the more likely and faster the second Group Buy will happen.

BTW, since the guys from BB&S are also one of our first Corporate Sponsors for our Movie "The RED dress" and we'll be used o n the homonymous Short film to be shot by end of this month, you better keep an eye on it, as we'll make use of about a DOZEN or so of the Area 48 Soft LED fixtures.

Sounds interesting. Thanks for the link, Ketch. Definitely would like to see more on how those Area 48's perform in various scenes. If there would be a simple breakdown in the BTS, for example, how the light was configured with the different accessories, that would be useful. During Alex's workshop, he touched on it a bit but I would like to see more practical use of it on set. Can't find too many resources on the internet about that light. It looks very promising, though!

Most welcome Othello,
trust me that no were else in any movie, film, documentary or on line film school, the gear was ever detailed and explained in both the quality, the configuration, and the why of it, and the results as we'll do on all BTS vids for both the Short film of "The RED dress" as well as the Feature Film, with a total of over 100+ hours of videos, and the BB&S lights will be featured on this short at will, since all scenes are shot at night, so I know you'll find everything you need to know about this lights just by watching the BTS, but also the Short in itself, since they will also star in it, as we'll shoot a Fashion shoot as part of the short while using the Area 48 Soft fixtures in portable mode with V-Lock batteries.

I am very interested in a group buy for the area 48 lights. I just joined the forum.

Lawrence Watts

My pleasure guys! And if I continue to receive enough request for an other round at this Group Buy I will do so, no problem, and this time they are ready to take CC from the US partner distributor, all I have to do is authorize a Code and give it a time frame for you guys to order, for those out side the US then will go thru the house manufacturer.

So if seriously interested in Buying the Area 48 Soft LED's, please pledge your serious interest here, and I'll see that it is done, just that this time will need to have a very limited window, so for this I need to have a decent amount of interested buyers and then open it with a Code and then give it a go for no more then few days.

Russ, I have not gotten such issue yet, do to the nice Remote Phosphor panel covering all LED's so nicely vs. other fixtures I used before, yet I understand what you might get, and of course without a Soft Box every LED in the market will give a particular spreaded shadow.

Welcome to Reduser Lawrence, make sure to follow this tread as I will post here when I'll start the next group buy, most likely after we shoot our short film "The RED dress" so to have a substantial amount of BTS cvid and pics of them in use, with an Epic film to go with.

With the second round of this Group Buy for the Area 48 Soft LED lights, most likely to happen by next month.

Awesome! Can't wait to see it. Keep up the good work!

I finally had a chance to put the Area48 through its paces last weekend; I am seriously impressed with light output and quality. Thanks again to Ketch for sharing and organizing the group buy! Really a great addition to my kit. I would definitely recommend to others.

My pleasure Tim! And again I am very happy that all of you love it as much as I do, and when I recommend a piece of gear to some one as crucial as Lighting is and it is liked as much s the Area 48 Soft are, it truly makes me happy, as I fill I have done the community some service of good, while providing you guys with a piece of tool that I my self use, and look forward to bring around two by August.

Oh btw, I want to give you guys the heads up, that for those of you that have shared their findings about the Area 48 Soft Led fixtures, BB&S team, might quote them and use them in their site, so those of you that have not shared their findings about them, are most welcomed to do so here instead that doing so via private PM to me, and give back some love for the great discount the guys over at BB&S have given this community, and are about to do again with the second round of a Group Buy, which not many companies would be willing to do.

As for the Second Group Buy round it will happen in August, right after I'm finished shooting my short "The RED dress" here in Modena Italy with the company of some great Reduser coming from all over, and the reason I'll do the second round only after my short, is because not just for time that I have very little of till after I have done that, but because since we'l make heavy use of the Area 48 Soft LED fixtures, and will be featured on set, and on the actual BTS vids, plus we'll review them, this will give a far better idea to any one uncertain or in the need for more info, and direct visual to have it all, and make a much better informed purchase after that.

To keep informed about the start of the second Group Buy remember to follow this thread, and to follow the filming progress of the short and the BTS videos to come follow me at any of the links in my signature, or also on the thread here: The RED dress

Vincent Laforet and Jonas Elmqvist (Visual Buddha) on the AREA 48. Watch the video first, then read my thoughts below and see if you agree.

http://vimeo.com/70287982#at=0

What struck me the most about this video was the model's makeup. Her face and about half of her neck are made up. The bottom of her neck and her chest aren't.

When they do the comparison between the AREA 48 and 1st gen LEDs (what look to be Litpanels), you can clearly see where the makeup stops. Not only that, her unmade up skin tone (and even a little bit on her made up forehead) is somewhat pink/magenta-y under the 1st gens, which causes her makeup to look yellowish by comparison.

The AREA 48 light gives her skin and the makeup a nice golden glow and actually helps blend the two areas together much better. Her makeup looks more even and she looks better overall.

One might argue that, since the 1st gen is maybe a little underexposed, the AREA 48 gives an illusion of better color rendition than what it might be in reality.

However, if you look at the :58 mark, when Jonas starts to move the light around her face, there are areas on her neck and chest that are fairly dark but still show a smoother transition and more pleasing skin tone.

At least, that's how it seems on my uncalibrated monitors.

Nice one, thanks for sharing it here Brian.

Vincent, sums up pretty good the Area 48, and your points are also in same way identifying what was happening on the video.

As I said my review and BTS of the Area 48 along side to other gear reviews, will be forthcoming with the shooting of "The RED dress" short film were this lights will be used both indoors, and outdoors at night, and will give a better understanding of the possibilities of this fixtures.

BTW, the second run of the Group Buy for the Area 48 will be executed very rapidly for US residents, directly via a CODE order thru the US partner. All others will also be able to experience a faster turn around via the Manufacturer in Europe, since they are ready for it this time around.

I look forward to bring to you this second round of the Area 48 Group Buy, so do let me know your interest to participate, and do keep yourself informed of when it will happen, as it will be a very short fixed Time frame, so make sure to subscribe to this thread as I will post the link of the new thread here for the second Group Buy to insure that every one interested does not miss out on this last chance to get in.

@Ketch,

Light Stand question for you :

From #134 : [Frank] "I am hoping the light comes standard with hardware to mount to a C- Stand --would that be correct?"
From #135 : [Ketch] "Yes C-Stand mount is included."

From #217 : [Erich] Great lamps. Back- ordered on the part that allows you to mount on a stand
From #218 : [Ketch] BTW, I also got the Stand pivots later on... Could not do with them... ;)

According to :
http://www.bbslighting.com/products/area-48-soft-remote-phosphor
The Area 48 includes a 'Angled Yoke with 5/8" Female Baby Pin TVMP'

Are all these the same component - or is an additional BBS 'Stand Pivot' component from BBS?

Thanks,
AJ
