  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

What kind of settings did you have Bob, and I assume top and bottom were installed? With the standard fans in adaptive mode at 60 degrees I think the fan runs at about 50% which is still too loud to keep it in that mode for shooting. From your use with them, would you say the fan speed will be lowered by at least 10%?
 
I had the settings to Quiet Record Mode. The news fans can haul a lot of air.

I ordered my Fan kit today and I would like to thank everyone for their research.. I also felt that RED made this kit for a reason and the last thing I want to hear if my camera should overheat is...why didn't you order the kit to avoid this issue? here is your repair bill. I would rather be apart of the group with the fan kit due to my investment than without it.

Tony ill kick you in the nuts first for even suggesting that we would do that.

The fans upgrade have nothing to do fixing a overheating problem.. because there isn't an overheating problem.... they are an option to get the sound lower in normal conditions and for turbo cooling in extreme conditions.

Got my top and bottom fan installed, took maybe 5 minutes including accessory removal. recored for an 45 minutes in the office today on adaptive setting with target set at 65. I could barely hear the fan and I was sitting right next to it. I am going to head out into a more demanding environment since the office is air conditioned. but I have done this test before with the old fans and it was way louder.

also something to note. when I stopped recording, the fan never went into turbo mode. So that is promising for any emotional interviews/takes that can get ruined by the sudden loud noise!
 
Thanks for that Ian, good to know. I like that about adaptive, one constant fan speed. Also good for black shade if the camera maintains temp, changing temp in locations shooting, could result in less shading.

That is good to know the new fans are quiet at that temp in adaptive for such a long roll, 45 mins is more than fine for me. If you have the time, could you check the fan speed % next time you try it out? (in case your not sure, got to your display menu>overlay>edit the current profile>tap on the plus sign and find fan speed then save). Would be very helpful to compare what the fan speed is running at the given temp and fan setting and time in recording. I assume this is epic 5K at speed? Thanks a lot!
 
I will check fan speed in the next couple days. since I am heading out on some shoots with a different camera package tomorrow. pretty stoked so far with the fan noise though!

When I upgrade to the new top fan does the grill still fit back on top? Also how quickly have people been receiving their fan upgrades?

The top fan came with a top piece that was slightly different then the one I had on. This is explained in the install instructions that you can find on the red download page.
 
Ouuuch..hey man I need my nuts =) I didn't mean it that way maybe that was a bad example, I thought people were saying there was an heat issue and loud noise. I came from a scarlet and I'm learning about the epic, thanks for correcting me and educating me on the fans because I want everything on point when I film. question.. while I have your attention if I may ask...what happen to those different colored epics camera pictures?? that may have been just an idea at the time but would it cost too much to do a custom paint job on them or did you guys want to keep it simple. One last question is it ok to use the HOYA IR filter on the lense with the EPIC ISO set to 800 or would using that filter damage the sensor? I love what you guys did on that IR video with the movi.
 
BTW ... hasn't been discussed much ... but I've noticed the batteries are not dropping as fast when on the fan adaptive mode with the top fan - anyone else notice this? I'm not running through a power distribution unit, so can't measure amps accurately (could be just wishful thinking ... but I don't think so?

Ha ha, cracked up for a moment here... But yea, go find and other company's President talking his mind out... Of course we now there is respect in how it is said, but we also know Jarred really means it too... ;)
 
It may sound weird now; but I think at some points RED does care about their customers too much...

like; they are shipping all the units produced to the customers who have pre-ordered in april but some of the RED offices didn't get their own set yet (I guess the demand is quite high and the numbers being produced are still too low)... At least I know about this for RED Germany in Berlin. Asked like a month ago already if I could drop by for a quick test if the unit works fine with my WC-Stuff but they still don't have a unit for that and don't know when it receives. And I really want to test it out before buying it (bringing the Camera is no problem).

As soon as it's tested and I see it working just fine -> I'll buy it! :)
But I guess for now I have to wait a little longer with my Berlin-visit...

So this is a shout out to RED;
Get your technicians and reps and offices some units first - this will also help with troubleshooting and stuff I guess :)
 
I just got my fan upgrade on my birthday (great timing by RED) and installed it on the 13th. Both sound guys on the feature loved how quiet it was in INT shooting. We been shooting a lot ext. in the NYC sun with iphone warnings to "stay inside." Just wrapped last night in a 86 degree basement before lighting. And the fans were just amazing. So far only shot in quiet record mode, and it's a big improvement. I used to shoot 25% record 100% standby. But now I just keep camera at quiet record, and enjoy how quieter it is in standby. So quiet and have yet to go past 69C. Tested quiet preview, quiet record, which we shot a few takes with in the heat. That was crazy low. We been using that mode for room tone to save media, and sound approves.

The only problem I had was during ext. day shooting I had to hold my top handle to op for long dolly take (7 minute) on the fisher, and that exhaust get really hot. ;)
