  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Thanks Trevor ..I checked it out sweet! I like the details you guys are giving, for instance keep lower fan and add top fan but someone else said the new lower fan is bigger. I will keep checking out the facts. thanks guys.

I sure wish we had our kit for this weekend.

We're going to be filming a sizzle spot for a racing team on the fringe of Death Valley (route 127). Projected temps are expected to hit 125-129 degrees Fahrenheit. Las Vegas will be 117. Tied for the record. Add to that the black, burning tarmac and you can imagine what we're in for.

It's going to be a real blast (furnace).

Somehow I don't think a fan noise is going to be an issue for you... :reddevil:

Suggestion, because I've been in a serious literal hell situation. Grab some white tarp for the ground (or heck a rug if you have space) and a big portable canopy for shade. Like a 12 footer.

Flag your camera off away from the sun like crazy if you find yourself shooting outside that canopy. Direct sunlight on all things black and metal is pure evil. I carry a nice flag with me just for these wonderful moments.

And water for you of course.

Just to put Viewfactor plate owners minds at rest....

Seems just as noisy in standby but importantly very quiet when recording.
I'm glad it improves the noise when shooting, but I was hoping it would also make the camera less noisy in standby. One of the critics / remarks I hear most often when I turn the camera on is "wow is the camera making that noise ?"...

Anyway, at least the camera hopefully won't start making a vacuum cleaner noise in the middle of a long take anymore !

Alexas are quiet, but they had to make them 3 times bigger for that reason, so I still prefer the compact form factor of the Epic.

Im a happy person;)
my Epic finally silent .. nice job RED TEAM.:thumbup:
Work with plaque viewfacory.

pics added.

Rob, you might be in danger of the outside, ambient air temperature being hotter than what the camera generates. See if you can get some peltier devices that you can attach to the camera. (Cool side to camera, of course)
Interestingly enough, Los Angeles still tops Las Vegas for all time record heat at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley... 119; a Saturday in July, 2006. I was shooting a horse show at the LA Equestrian Center in Burbank where it was 115. Burbank probably set an all time record that day, too.

I only bought and just installed the top fan and have to report that the camera is quieter at every fan level from 20% to 100%. Also with the new firmware the system is quieter using the camera in the same situation. Very happy for the upgrade and well worth the $250 for the fan. I'll get the new bottom fan for the next Doc i film and the system will be even quieter. Thank you RED for addressing the one major issue I've had with the EPIC. I can live with the fan noise now.

Hmm... I am shooting some interviews in a couple of weeks. I haven't had any noise problems with my Scarlet thus far but, then again, don't shoot a lot of interviews. Wondering if I should make the investment in news fans. Opinions?

So I've been testing out the new fans for a few hours. Burned some takes, particularly focusing on the "Adaptive" and "Quiet Record" fan modes.

Thoughts on the newer 2.0 fans (top and front are on my camera):

I think the key word here is going to be efficiency.

On that sort of "max cooling" thing that happens they get to nearly the same audible range and create that louder sound we're all familiar with, and potentially could be louder even than what you heard before at 100%.

However, that is because they do indeed cool the camera down faster from what I can observe and are significantly more powerful. Pushing a ton of air actually.

I think the secret sauce is in those newer fan modes in combination with the DSMC Fans 2.0 as you can get the camera very quiet during recording and it's much better during longer takes, like way, way better. There appears to be a smart algorithm at play here and the fans slowly escalate during your take, but don't go to full blast while rolling. Adaptive is the interesting one to watch as it allows you to set a target temperature between 45 and 70. Setting the temp at 70 seems to provide the best "camera on user experience" and is sort of a one note type of sound. I'd try running it there for a few hours and see what you get.

Oddly, there's a familiar sound that's coming through my ear when I hear the fan run quiet and when I have have my head next to the camera. Sort of like film moving through a gate, but real quiet. I could just be crazy though.

I'll be testing this out hot and heavy over the next few days.

But initially here's what I can observe:

- More power, more efficient cooling.
- In combination with the new algorithms you can pretty much keep the camera quiet during a shoot in normal-ish conditions.

I am based in Helsinki, Finland. Much to my delight I was just informed that my fan upgrade is shipping next week.

I wonder if any other European redusers are planning to purchase the fan fixer?

The product costs only 9 USD, but the shipping expenses for such a small purchase are a bit disproportionate (58,54 USD !)

Perhaps we could work out some kind of group buy and consolidate the order into a single shipment? PM me if interested.

What is that?

Pat

It is an off-set piece that is required to make the front fan compatible with a particular LW 15mm bracket.

To quote the product description "Fan Fixer is designed to space the LW 15mm Bracket further away from the camera body to accomodate the new fan upgrade introduced by RED. This part will work in combination with the Easy Riser, Easy Riser XL, and Quick Riser. It will not work with third party brackets or risers."

If anyone don't mind telling me what are the settings to make my EPIC silent like the Alexa and do I need the top fan to do this??

Thanks Antti for your answer.

Well my setting was using the FanPlate and this was before software update and RED's front fan update was here. It only can get better now!
