  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Joker-Bug vs. NILA (other)

I think the remote phosphor lights are a really nice addition to the tools we already have. It'll be great to see how those advance. Love the idea of changing panels for different high quality temperatures.

I'll be speaking and shooting in London and missing Cinegear this year. The lights I'm talking about are currently not available and won't be at Cinegear. They should be available later this year however, hopefully within the next 3 months.

In terms of my favorite lights I like both K5600 and Nila. I've used them both. I'm not real fond of certain things that HMI and this particular level of LED technology represents. However, I like the units. I like most of the standard workhorses out there. Mole, ARRI, etc... Even dig the Profoto HMI lights.

Like is not love though, hence my sniffing leading me in a different direction.

Profoto HMI costs much more (remember, Profoto ballast is sold seperately) than K5600 Joker for same watts, and does not fit as many accessories. You also can easily rent Jokers, but not profotos, to video shoots because people know them and trust them. Joker comes with Par attach and lenses, Profoto no. Easy choice.

Phil, now you got me really excited :-) I´ll stay tuned for sure. For now we use broncolor lights (yet another company coming from the stills lighting). These are very compact an offer a tremendous choice of modifiers, you can use them as "bug" but I have to admit besides the PARA88 I really like the PAR Setup. Main advantage is the lights are IP54, they can be used in heavy rain, even the ballasts are water protected and also cover different wattages in one unit(400/575/800W). Cheers, Ulf

Working on it guys. Keep the fingers crossed and all that. R&D and all that. All that.

Hi Phil,

We all appreciate your efforts. Luckily the Solstice is upon us and lotta lux out there...;-)

Thank you very much

I should have a bit more info by Friday on where things are. If not, I will be sad pants as I have shoots on the horizon.

Hi Phil,

Is there a, so to say, reasonable chance that this novel lighting solution could be available in August/ latest September, for general group Buy purchase? ;-)

Thank you very much

In a perfect would I would say so, yes.

I'm dedicating a little time to really push the pedal down. If I smell a hint of "not likely" in that time frame I'll come back here and tell you all.

I'll see what I can do about publishing photometrics and spectral measurements, maybe a couple images of the actual light emitted.

As it stands the last time I measured the light you are looking at a 97 or 98 CRI for the daylight balanced light. That's measured and a legit number.

The difference between 98 and 100 CRI is imperceptible to the human eye. Additionally, there's some color index stuff I should be able to tell you about soon.

And this is battery operated (option) single light source, accepting attachments?

Can't imagine any less, as Phil was ready to throw some serious jing at Nilas, just B4 this "(other)" option came to...light.

Lotta info coming Friday.

Thank you very much

Also, have anyone here compared the Nila Varsa to the Litepanels Sola 4? Based on the Sola 4 photometrics it seems like its not nearly as bright, but its also half the price.

These are two completely different light fixtures. The Varsa is all about punch, with an array of LEDs and some etched lens panels for general beam focus control. The Sola-4 is a fresnel, which means that it is all about beam shape and control. It's like comparing a PAR to a fresnel. Just different animals.

Just reviving this thread to see if there were any updates on these lighting packages. I know a some people said they had some "insider knowledge" of new fixtures hitting the market soon.

Yeah Phil you gave us quite a teaser...

Hoping for an update from Phil before next/last Area 48 group buy goes live.
