  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TrueMotion Must Be Destroyed!!!

I know this doesn't fit here.. but, does LED TVs performs better than LCD or Plasma quality-wise? I know Plasma wins LCD (long time ago.. not sure these days) but don't have much info on LEDs.

We go through hoops to create a surreal visual theatrical experience only to be punished by the Bland Video Gods.

I was in a restaurant tonight and asked the manager to turn the TrueMotion off. Once he did, he turned to me and said, "I was wondering why the movies looked like I was watching a day time soap."

Fantastic article -- I'll refer that one to my friends. I agree 100% with its sentiments. Thanks for sharing it, Martin.

These motion interpolation things will be done in theatres also when 3D converts to 48p or 60p to reduce bandwidth as well probably.

That is one reason I think its sad that all 35mm release print stock production will end soon, and it will no longer be possable to "fix" the grading and motion on an uncompressed media that just gets projected As-Is...

Plasma still rules. Much faster pixel to pixel refresh rate, superior color accuracy, real life contrast ratios and better shadow detail rendering. An LED TV is just an LCD panel with LED back lighting.

"If you’ve been paying attention, you might ask, “But Stu, now that I know how to turn off motion smoothing, isn’t a 120Hz or 240Hz LCD panel the better choice for the 24p movie lover, since it can display a true 24 frames per second?” The answer is still no, because modern plasma displays, such as the Panasonics I like, detect 24p material and switch their refresh rates to 48Hz, displaying a true 24p. So plasma is still the cinephile’s choice for a flat panel."

I had no idea plasma screens do this. Is there a reason LCDs can't or don't?

I agree with the article for the most part - But LCDs are not all bad (without torch mode, obviously). There are situations where it is simply better suited like bright rooms or connected to PCs.

Great article. Yes plasma is the best. And as David points out LED is just the backlight replacement on LCD screens. The backlight is fluorescent tubes on standard LCDs.

and many of those LED sets use "edge" lighting instead of backlighting.

Edge lighting can actually be preferable to backlighting depending on the type of backlight used - I believe that faced with RGB matrix backlight and edge light you go with RGB matrix but that can be expensive and may not be an option. White LED backlighting, however, can produce uneven light levels as color temperature and intensity can vary greatly between the individual LCD bulbs and in this case edge lighting produces a superior picture.

i can't believe people are still putting up with it. i remember YEARS ago when i first noticed it and felt a strong, mysterious desire to kick the television screen in the store.

I disagree with the LCD vs Plasma argument for most people. Most people watch TV and movies in a room that isn't blacked out. In these cases the LCD is better. That's why I went LCD vs plasma.

Agree with you on this one. If you get one of the better LCD's that is ISF certified and calibrate properly they look just fine. There are two Expert calibration presets on my LG and we have one set for dark conditions and one for daylight conditions. Turning off all the extraneous consumer bling helps too. Makes a much better reference monitor for HD grading than any computer monitor anywhere close to its price.

Also if I remember correctly Plasma TVs consume a lot more power, get hotter and have shorter life expectancy. But truemotion does suck for the most part, except for when viewing scrolling text on the screen...

Criticizing the feature not meant for watching movies for making movies look bad ?

Great article on how modern TVs destroy movies:

The article criticizes the negative effect of misused technology and the title is misleading.
