  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Just installed 10.9 DP, 4KUHD showed up by default in Display Preferences, so HDMI 1.4 working out of the box with GTX680-Seiki !!!!!!!!!!!

That's great! Does 30 Hz / 31 Hz work? Does the TV ever go black and reacquire signal, when using 4K?

I can well imagine why vendors like nVidia and ATI haven't put engineering resources into including 3840x2160 resolutions in their GPU drivers in the past - virtually no one had displays at that res. Those days are over. IF, and its a big IF, the GPU vendors wanted to I believe they could add 2160p support to their drivers and quite a number of graphics boards released in the last 3 years could manage 30Hz refresh rates at 3840x2160/8bit.

Perhaps Jeff or one of the other hard cores could comment on the fundamental requirements for an HDMI port to meet the 1.4a spec. The physical port appears the same whether 1.3 or 1.4. A proper high speed cable would certainly be needed. But is there any built in limitation that would keep an updated GPU driver from pushing 3840x2160 out of the HDMI port on any card with enough muscle and VRAM to handle the task? I get that in order to get more bit depth/color precision and better refresh rates a newer and more powerful graphics board is a good idea. That said, to speed adoption of UHD/4K across a larger population it sure would be great if more of the GPUs people already have could at least join the party at 3840x2160 30Hz, 8 bit.

Only limitation on most video cards is the pixel clock or actual data rate that can be pushed to the port. As we have seen in this thread, it's possible to tweak drivers or mode profiles to get 2160p output. I can drive the SEIKI @ 30Hz straight out of the box on Windows with current nVidia drivers and the GTX Titan no problem. Also works just fine with a GTX690. ...And should work with a 680. On OSX, it isn't as simple. Have to dig into configuration settings and I have to admit that I have not really worked on it myself as I saw others were tackling that one. My SEIKI is connected to a Titan card in my Z820 workstation as my secondary display and big workspace and it's awesome. Wish it was 60Hz, but it's still awesome.

When I had the Sharp PN-K321, these cards drive it fine @ 60Hz, but it's a split-screen arrangement. ATI drivers handle it better, nVidia drivers treat it as two separate displays, so you have some minor issues to deal with.

OSX 10.9 DP has native support for 2160p modes and there are also a few other high resolution modes in there, suggesting that we're about to see a bunch of new "retina" display products. I'm fully expecting the next iMac revisions to have retina displays as well as the upcoming Cinema Display product that will be launched with the Mac Pro. That isn't official, but I think it's obvious that it's coming. 5120x1880 is in the mode list, actually has been since 10.8 and they have recently launched that Mavericks wallpaper at that resolution -- seems like a subtle announcement of sorts. Also nice to see 4096x2160 and 3840x2160 in the mode list for "4K" modes.

GTX680 Mac Edition drives the SEIKI just fine with no additional help in OSX 10.9. At least that's what I've heard from several sources...
 
Can you use Redplayer to play r3d's at 4k (with a fast system) or is it too much for current machines? If successful, which card/pc did you use to do it? I've got a Seiki in one of my labs and before I buy a new card (needed to get 4k) I'd like to know if I can get full res playback out of any of them.
 
Was able to get mostly real time playback, occasional stutters, playing back directly from a RedMag on a RedStation reader using a mid level PC with a RedRocket for processing and an ATI Radeon 7970 card to drive the Sony ES-1000 at 3840x2160/29.97. If I had copied the R3Ds to a RAID and installed a 2nd Rocket I would expect the Radeon 7970 would have no problem driving the display.

Of course if the original data set had been written out to an RGB or YUV format (i.e. ProRes444@3840x2160/30) and parked on the RAID then the 7970, or a number of other graphics boards noted in this thread, should work a charm. What I'm attempting to suss out is IF we had proper drivers, how far down the GPU food chain could one go and still get steady 3840x2160/30Hz output over HDMI (or even a DL DVI to HDMI adapter). Minimum I would trust, based on very limited info so far, is the nVidia 660 with 2GB of VRAM but AFAIK, at the moment, that would require a custom setting which I consider a far less appealing option than being able to use a driver preset vetted by the GPU vendor. YMMV.

Bought mine last week when it was cheaper with free shipping. And Amazon had a no interest financing for 12 months on the purchase at the time. I feel lucky to have got it at that price.

Now if my REDRAY will ship I'll be happy. I ordered 20 min after it went live so I'm hoping to get a ship notice soon.

TV has already shipped will be here in a few days.
 
TigerDirect Canada has it for 1399 CAD.

I want to bite (ordered a REDRAY months ago), but would like to see others with REDRAY and Seiki have a go at it first.
 
When googling about other cheap UHD TVs stumbled upon this china-only 39" uhd tv review and this nfo about overclockability. 38Hz is not that much more then 30Hz, but still may reduce a bit of tearing. I didn't like DPI/scale being too small for comfortable use as monitor, but that makes sense for quadrupled resolution but only slightly increased size unlike for 50" Seiki. That also made me think how overclockable Seiki's TV might be @UHD, has anyone tried out to max it out?
 
My apologies if this was covered somewhere...

We ordered the Seiki and were lucky enough to get it at $960 before the price went up again!

Anyways, until we get a RED Ray, I'm hoping we can connect it from our Red Rocket card to see 4k footage on a 4k display. The Rocket has just a DVI out...does the Seiki have a DVI in or do I need an adaptor to convert it to HDMI? Any other better way to connect it for basic grading & viewing from Red Rocket?
