  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Also want to add for anyone reading... I did have sync issues like many others but the latest firmware seems to have fixed it. I've been using this as a monitor for about 6 hours straight with no drop outs. I am using the supplied blue hdmi cable with my Nvidia 780 gtx.

Are there any good sources for 4K footage with high data rates? 99% of the stuff up on youtube is so compressed that any movement at all makes the video indistinguishable from 1080p content.

There aren't a lot of clips available in 4K, but I guarantee more will come once more 4K panels hit the budget market.

Thanks for the link! This was exactly what I wanted to see. The opening sequence showing a pan of all the lenses held together really well in regards to not having too many compression artifacts like the youtube videos do. Some of the colors on the color chart showed a small amount of artifacting but I'm sure that's to be expected.

I did notice one problem, which I assume is on my end. The video seems to judder back and forth a bit as the camera pans during the opening sequence. At first I was questioning whether or not my computer was choking on being able to handle the data rate except it was very consistent throughout the entire sequence. Also, it was not noticeable on the rest of the video or on the clips of the girl at the end. Could this possibly have something to do with my monitor being set to 30fps and the video being 24fps? I guess I could try creating a custom monitor profile with the exact same frame rate as the video... Any thoughts?

Once OS X 10.9 Mavericks is released, you can easily use the Seiki 39/50" as a monitor with a graphics card that is capable of outputting 4K over a single HDMI link. Max refresh rate is 30Hz at 4K, and up to 120Hz at 1080p.
 
There are no HDMI 2.0 products as the standard has not yet been ratified. First products may be available early next year, but there appears to be no upgrade path. HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 do support up to 60Hz at 4K/UHD resolutions, as does ThunderBolt 2 in the new Mac Pro.
 
For any of those mac users who don't want to upgrade I received my accel DP 1.1 -> HDMI 1.4 active adapter today and was able to test it out.

As expected I had no issues getting 3840x2160 on Mac OS X without doing anything special. For whatever 30Hz was the only refresh rate listed though.

I don't use Mac OS X all that much so I didn't play with it that much but I did test the adapter on my machine running linux and it also worked great at any mode I threw at it:

3840x2160@31 Hz 307 Mhz pixel clock
3840x2160@29.97 Hz 297 Mhz pixel clock
3840x2160@25 Hz 297 Mhz pixel clock

This is excellent news. Its actually a very affordable option. This probably would work with a minidisplay port to display port adapter on the thunderbolt output of a Macbookpro Retina, right? There we go, a proper working mac solution!

That is exactly what I did but you can just by the miniDP version. I have a macboo pro retina running mac os lion (i bought it the first day it came out and never upgraded mac OS on it). I got the regular non miniDP adapter because I am mainly going to use it on my desktop that has a regular DP port and getting mini DP -> DP is easier than the reverse.

Not doing much 4k playback. I have played a bunch of 4k test (primarily h264) files which all play smoothly with vdpau (video card rendering) with the exception of one which is >250 megabits and 50 FPS which I can play using CPU rendering @ 800% cpu usage.

I primarily run linux and I have a script which switches my refresh rate on the fly when I play video files so it matches the video.

Great, thanks man! I am on the verge of jumping for a 4K solution in order to showcase 4K content to potential clients. This monitor is a real bang for the buck, and seeing I can use the Macbook Pro Retina to display 4K content right now is what I needed to hear!
 
39" model is now in stock on amazon for $699

I called the company selling it. They said that they are not in stock their system showed they will be getting it in stock in 3-6 days which I am not sure if I believe considering the sears pre-order is still almost 1 month away.
 
The 39-inch Seiki is now available from a few places like Beach Photo if anyone is interested.
 
I have very little interest in the 39". I would buy it if it had a means of accepting and displaying 60Hz or better at UHD resolution so I could use for a proper desktop display. And, along with that, also did not do typical "TV processing" which softens and distorts the image and wreaks havoc on fine details like fonts. I think SEIKI still needs to address their signal handling and drop-out problems on the 50-inch before I saddle up for any of their other products. Not trying to be an ass, just saying it the way it is. The 50" is great and all, love the resolution, decent color once dialed in, but it has issues. It often shows an appearance of Judder or similar motion issues when handling 4K. It often drops out or blacks out or has signal input issues -- sometimes they can be cleared up by running the signal through a booster or something that can stabilize. In reality, the display is too temperamental.

Just got the 55" Sony. And yes, ti's 4.5X the price, but it doesn't exhibit any of these issues. It also has a lot more flexibility for tweaking color/ gamma and handling details like fonts on the screen. Of course, no 60Hz at 4K operation, but that's just the way things are in the market right now with the available tech. Save for the few desktop 4K displays that use dual-inputs to pull it off. Sony still get's a full star marked off for their integrated dumbo-ear speakers. Everyone keeps saying they sound great. I realize I'm somewhat of an audiophile, but still I think they suck. Sony doesn't know how to make a good-sounding speaker, they just don't. And truth be told, these new flat panel speakers don't sound any better than the speakers integrated into my Panny VT25 plasma that this Sony is replacing. They're just louder, perhaps a bit clearer, but also sharper. A harsh, tin-can, sort of sharp. :(
 
Hmm.. With the sharpness turned to 0 I don't see any processing really @ 4k (fonts are pixel to pixel and look great). Also once I got a proper videocard with working drivers I never get dropouts anymore as long as I stick to HDMI1/HDMI2 even over a 60+ foot redmere HDMI cable.

I of course am not using devices to hook up with it (which I am sure some have problems) and just using a computer and all I will ever hook up to it so for my workload it works well.

Honestly 30Hz IMHO is fine for just desktop use and video. The only time I really need the 60Hz+ is for gaming and in that case I just drop down the resolution. Honestly even if it did 60Hz @ 3840x2160 I might still drop down to 1920x1080 to get 120Hz like I get now.
