  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic+Rokinon Exotic Cars Stills from the streets of Modena with Love... ;)

Indeed Kyle, and you mentioned a point I forgot to, this are longer (in view) on Scarlet/Epic, a little less on Dragon, but still longer then "L" series or any other Full Frame glass, as this do not have the 1.3 Crop factor but a 1.6 and for this the 35mm on Epic (Scarlet) is closer to a 56mm and as some one has reported, they don't miss the 50mm so much, but the 50mm will indeed be a welcome addition as it will then give you a field of view as a 80mm, since the current 85mm is about a 136mm now.

Again this are all in the name of theoretical views not the correct analogy of how a sensor and a lens interact, but for the sake of not going too technical on any one here lets just keep calling it a Crop factor... ;)

So having said that, here is what you get on the Epic/Scarlet with the Rokinon glass:

14mm = 22.4mm

24mm = 38.4mm

35mm = 56mm

50mm = 80mm

85mm = 136mm

Thanks for the info guys. From that pic the lens really doesn't look that bad when it's fully open. I do a lot of 1080 projects so at that resolution I probably couldn't go wrong picking it up, looks like such a good bang for it's buck.

And here you must take note that this shots were all hand held but one, and that there were shot on available light, at stops of 16 to 22, really at the worst of any lens right next to shooting WO on cheap lenses, yet I was very pleased with it

Why would you do that? A few stops of ND would have helped these shots enormously.

Just stunning!

Looks great Ketch!

OUT Standing stuff Ketch
I love it.

Can you guys tell me what you like about these images?

Liam, with all do respect... And not to INSULT your intelligent, but I think you would have found a better time invested posting some thing else some were else... I mean seriously, do you think I need any advise about when and how make use of ND's??

But to indulge you, I had none, that is why I didn't use any, they were left on the bag in Rome 5 hours away, and that is why after the first shot I removed the MB and went all Hand Held.

Okay, more to it, I bag to differ from your opinion enormously, as this shots needed nothing else, or they were not been taken, if I could not have done so insuring a proper exposure without ND's, adjusting ISO and Aperture, I would have simply scratched all out, and even if I had taken them and see in post that they were no good I would not have posted them, if you don't like them, then that is your opinion, and you are absolutely entitled to one by all means, all Artists no matter the field can't ever expect that every one will like their work, no matter how good.

What do I like about these shots?
I'm sitting here drooling over these cars...honestly I don't care how they were photographed, nd/no nd. You could of used an iPhone and an Instagram like filter. I just need one of those in my garage.

but anyway, I welcome a 50mm. Cheap and a nice missing link to the 35mm-85mm gap. I could of used and abused the 50 on set. I only wanted to use other glass brands on specific "artistic" shots because of the worry that the glass could end up not matching. I found myself having to get closer and ended up casting shadows on subjects/talent. And using the 85 and backing up was too much and never an option with the given space. I bought the 24,35 and 85 online for roughly $1,000...can't beat that. I always hear "what you need are some master primes" well I don't. I need that Pagani & Lamborghini and my epic mounted to them

Ketch, I'm just asking a question. You stated you shot at f/22, you didn't say why. No need to be so defensive, we're all friends here. This isn't flickr, discussing technique and sharing information is a huge benefit to many people on REDUser, it's kind of the point of this forum. You know that as much as anyone.

Rokinon lenses are a great choice for budget shooters and can look absolutely fantastic. But, as you no doubt also know, you need to be in the sweet spot of lens. At f/22 you're going to suffer from refraction. If you like the shots and they are exactly as you wished them to be, fine. I have no issue with that, I'm not here to critique your images.

Fair enough:-) I wondered if that was what the earlier posters were referencing or if they were commenting on the photography.

I always hear "what you need are some master primes" well I don't.

I couldn't agree more.

I like these snaps. And I wonder how different they would look at a lower stop, Some how the small iris makes the cars look sharp as knifes and that shows their lines and designs in a very nice way. Shooting them wide open would make them look differently of course but I do not think always for the better.

When I want to go wide open and there is to much light I very often ditch motion blur, It's something I like more and more, The more I shoot with the epic I think that a lot less than 180 deg is looking better than if shot at 180. So if I go around and shoot with only camera and lens I can be down to like 5 or 11 deg for shutter allowing for a open lens and leaving ND's at home and I then very rarely I find that I miss the motion blur in the shots taken and more often I find that i really like the sharpness that I get by doing so. I think 1/2 a frame of exposure was maybe a bit more than optimal for film but people used it all the time since the isue was usually to get enough light, and then you do not want to adjust your mirror for the shots that would do better with shorter exposure so ND's kind of became the way of practice. As for shots with not much moment I see no use for motion blur, and for shots with a bit of moment people slowly walking and not close to camera or such I think 45 is fine and for shots with camera moment I think if you then need the full 180 deg not to get stuttering then you should slow down your move or go more towards a swosh pan or such. As the cameras does simply not look good in 180 and to much movement/ motion blur...

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit.

I think we will get to see more than one snap from Ketch using these lenses so if we just sit back and wait we will get to see beauty in wide open as well, lol.

Sorry Liam,

I misread completely your reply, and I tough you were been offensive in, and you are absolutely right, no need to be offensive to any one, and I am the absolute first to always push for respectfulness to one an other, so again my apologies for been rude to you in defense of a post was not meant to be an attac at me at all.

And yes, I should have stated that I dind't had any ND's, which at the end served also the purpose of testing how did the lenses do closed down, so that next is left a wide open shoot test and the lenses will be tested on both ends knowing that the mid apertures will surely do much better, or better for sure.

And of course as any one with a minimum of experience is understood that the sweet spot of al lenses, even the top notch ones, is always mid apertures, form 5.6 to 8 been the holy grail, and 8 to 11 the follow, were anything below and or above is greatly depending on the glass, but again as I stated above in previous post, I believe that it was actually a good thing I had forgotten the ND's, as I was surprised to see how well the lenses held up at such apertures, again, for this particular lenses and for how truly affordable they are to literally any one!!

My pint exactly Kyle, and this coming form a guy that did own Master Primes, you don't need them or any other super expensive Cine Glass to take great images, however we also need to understand that the reason I had them and will have them for my first film if I can, and if any of the sponsors has one set to loan, is because of their capacity in allowing to shoot Wide Open with absolute fantastic results, and their capacity to allow for avery precise cine workflow were a cine tape can give exact readings which can be applied to the letter, or better said to the number of focus marking by the focus puller to hit the spot all the time, this is what the Best and most expensive Cine glass is for, but when you can't afford it, then you do the best you can with what you can have.

Now... About having one of those cars in your (or MIne) garage I could not agree more, that is also what I would care for... ;)

Thanks Björn, a stop or two, or even three lower will have made a difference, but I agree with you, as I prefer to shoot Cars, as I shot Architecture and Landscapes, or Cityscapes, at a higher stop, usually any were form 8 to 11, were for details shots I can go as wide as the lens allows, but just to isolate some of those details, for the all car, I like this look, all in focus, and with their lines well marked and sharp all around.

Now I have all my gear here in Modena, and will begin some test beauty shoots for the Short of the Film, and you are right, give me some time to settle down here in my new place, and you'll se lot more, since an entire year has passed by without the possibility for me to shoot anything, now Ill make up for it... ;)
