I'm looking for some battery/storage wisdom while I wait on my Scarlet to Epic-X upgrade. I have some Redvolts right now, and while they work OK for my Scarlet setup, I want to check the difference between shooting 4K/24 6:1 compared to 5K/24 3:1.
Right now I have 2 Redvolts and 1 64GB mag.
Most of my shooting happens where 120V and Firewire 800 are handy, but I have some upcoming remote shots, so I'd like to check the current wisdom on this scenario.
Currently, two Redvolts come close to saturating my 64GB storage. That is, I can go out into the world with a blank 64GB card and two Redvolts, and they both run out at about the same time.
Some specific questions:
- Redbricks are 140Wh and Redvolts are 37Wh. Is the "hour" unit measurement roughly linear with the same capture settings? That is, if a Redvolt gives me ~20 mins of operation, will the Redbrick give me ~70 mins of operation with the same capture settings between an Epic and a Scarlet?
- How much does a Redbrick weigh?
- What is the cheapest way to attach a Redbrick to a rig, assuming it is already on rails? I do not come from a cinema gear background, and I am confused about what a V-Plate is. It looks like a physical mass holder + copper connector + cable-out? Certainly there is a way to tape something like this to rails for less than $500? (I don't advocate tape, just looking for the full gamut of possibilities.)
- Given the same battery, how do the operating time lengths differ for 5K/24 3:1 compared to 4K/24 6:1?
- Given the same shoot length, how does the storage change between 5K/24 3:1 compared to 5K/24 6:1 compared to 4K/24 6:1.
In other words, I know that going out without storage or electricity with my Scarlet that will give me about ~60GB of footage with 37*2Wh of battery. How will this change with an Epic-X?
Bonus questions:
- What happens to Redvolts and Redbricks at high altitudes and cold nights? Older batteries that I have had died instant and painful deaths in such situations. Modern ones seem fine. Do Red batteries survive or perish?
- Do the 48GB "Scarlet" mags work OK with Epic 5K/24 3:1? Do they work OK with 6:1, 9:1, 12:1? How do you balance this with the CPU/battery cost?
Thanks!
