  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do I hook up an External HDMI Monitor to the Scarlet ??

George, what method are you using to change the menus as you don't have a touch (redmote or sidehandle?).

It sounds like you are confused about how to operate the monitor control menu. Are you expecting the monitor control menu to have HDMI already selected when you open it? When you say itʻs "stuck on LCD" do you mean thatʻs the option that is selected in the list when you enter monitor control? If so, thatʻs normal, LCD is just the first option in the list. Once you change that menu selection to HDMI, then you change the settings for your display resolution and refresh rate.

Confusion is an understatement. I am "bewildered"!! :(

I realize it is already defaulted to "Brain LCD", so I change it to "Brain HDMI", then push the menu button to get out of it. When I go back, it's on "Brain LCD" AGAIN. That's all I know. And, no matter what I do, I cannot get the camera image to show up on an external HDMI monitor OR a SDI Monitor.

?????????????????

Ok, so thatʻs exactly what should happen. The menu defaults to LCD the first time you open the menu as well as the next, so donʻt worry about that part. The only concern you have is choosing HDMI or SDI from the drop down and manipulating the settings shown. It sounds like youʻre expecting the menu to have HDMI selected when you first open it, but it wonʻt, and that doesnʻt matter. Youʻre not activating HDMI when you select it, the HDMI signal is always active. Does that help?

Also, have you tried another HDMI monitor?

Well, that sure helped Jeff.

I find that kind of strange that it won't STAY on HDMI if you set it up that way, but OK, I'll stop worrying about that end of it.

Now, I've just got to get the image to show up, and no I have not tried a separate monitor yet, but I will do that now.

Thanks.

PS - Why, when I go to set "Priority", does it "skip over" Brain HDMI ? It won't let me pick that as a priority. ????

Cool, sounds like youʻre getting there. I went through this a bit as well with earlier builds, it was even less straight forward then. What worked for me was to get the monitor set up with a known HDMI input, say DVD player. Once you see the DVD picture, you know the monitor and cable path is setup correctly. Then, take that HDMI straight off the DVD player and plug it into the camera. If the monitor doesnʻt show a picture from the brain, you need to set up the HDMI menu options differently.

OK, I did just get it to show up on a different monitor. But, the image is VERY noisy, with pixels flying all over the place and the edges of the subject showing up with all kind of colors around them. And, now that that is working, I can no longer see the image in the Red EVF.

We MUST be able to see images in BOTH ways, and at the SAME TIME.

Any more suggestions?

This sounds as if you have the edge focus turned on...?

EDIT: check by going to settings/display/tools/ it should say "none" if you want to have the standard output.

EDIT2: in the display settings you can choose "tools" this determines if the Tools options mentioned above should be activated for that specific display.

Maybe you have mix matched settings. i.e., one menu is set on 720 on the other on 1080?

About the priority, George: the list you are seeing is exactly that: a list. First item has first priority, second item second prio and so on.
You can select an item, skip to the right to the up and down buttons and push these. That will move your item up or down the priority list. Remember this just declares the inner workings which monitor gets to have the menu over the others.

Maybe try to get a coffee, tea or a brew and open up the manual again and take your time reading through that section. I find the new manual (for firmware 4.x) to be pretty nice and fairly easy to understand.

Wish we could talk over the phone. Sometimes that makes it a lot easier :)

Sorry George, I meant maybe you have 720 selected on the monitor and 1080 selected on the camera, or vice versa....

No, that's not the case, but thanks anyway Jeff.

I think I need to take a break, like Patrick suggested, and get away from it until maybe tomorrow. I just can't get it to work, and it's better to step back, than hurl it out the window like I'm now on the verge of doing. :(

Thanks.

George I will also suggest you get a touch LCD whenever you can afford it. It's a big bag of hurt without it IMHO. There are so many shortcuts available on the screen that it saves so much time clicking and scrolling on the sidehandle.

Yeah. The requirement of the Touch LCD is probably the biggest misconception I've seen from those buying the camera.

May I ask you Paul, exactly what you mean by that?

Are you saying the Red 5" Touch LCD Monitor for the Scarlet, is overrated? Or, are you saying, it is a MUST have for proper camera operation and ease of changing menu settings?

Or, what?

Thanks.

George

George, how is everything with your Monitor situation? Care to send a quick phone picture of what you're seeing or you gonna wait and give RED a quick call tomorrow to have them walk you through it?
