  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I thought i wanted a RED Scarlet do I ?

If you have the side handle, and have a v mount on the bIt's a k, I believe you can hot swap the v mount batteries.

If you have a Redvolt in, I believe you can them hotswap batteries. But having to stop down a couple seconds between takes is a LOT better than running out of internal battery in the field, which, at that point, you're screwed. Let's see... a two hour internal battery is somehow 'better' than using a Redbrick or an AB? When that battery dies, then what?

But I love how overly-defensive BMCC employees are on here posing as 'RED users'. It's a great step up from DSLRs but it's not in Scarlet's league. It just isn't yet. I was originally going to buy a BMCC after last year's NAB but then I demoed it and compared.

There are plenty of ways to get a RED Scarlet or Epic to run like that, it is a modular system after all.....

And the lower level of QC on those off the shelf drives means even the tested and approved ones drop frames....

Don't get me wrong the BMCC is a fine camera but some of its strengths are also flaws...

modular system = $$$$

that's okay if you limitless pockets, but i don't. side handle is $950 and 2 redvolts with a charger is $515. not exactly cheap.

Ive been running a 480gb Sandisk SSD with my BMCC that i paid $300 for a few months with no dropped frames to speak of as of yet. (cross my fingers). I understand RED products are surperior in build quality but I cant fathom how a 512gb card costs $3,900.

Awesome for you. Soooo... you're not a RED owner... but you're on the RED board... for what reason?

Nobody is saying it's a bad camera... it's a step up from prosumer DSLRs but Scarlet and Epic are 'professional' cameras... and BMCCs are awesome for film students like yourself.

I have shot with the BMCC 2.5K and all the different makes of the RED cameras. My opinion......the BMCC is nowhere close to the features of ANY RED. The winner is.......RED!!!!

haha, wow man. Its REDuser, not REDowner. I've recently just shot a film with both the epic, and scarlet and have used this forum to learn a great deal of information. There's a lot of awesome people on here that are super helpful.

So let me get this straight, since i dont own an epic or scarlet i have no right to be in this forum? Even i choose to rent? Classy, man.

No... what I'm saying is you sound like a know-it-all when you haven't even gotten your feet wet enough to know the difference of "why" the Scarlet/Epic is a better than the BMCC while you are still learning... but I guess you can't teach someone whose cup is already full.

Getting in line for a few BMC 4k cameras is probably a good business. As they will probably not be available any time soon, My guess is about a years waiting time, and when they do come out then the waiting list will be long so if you got in line early you could probably turn a little profit from selling them for a prime price.

So as a business plan I think ordering the BMC 4k is not a bad decision. Even if there are some risk involved.

But I would never buy it as my personal camera and definitely not for my professional work. As to me the BMC is kind of the worst combination possible between a professional camera and one made for hobbyist.

I never said the BMCC was better. Of course its not. I could of used my bmcc to shoot the short that i just DPd, but instead i shelled out thousands of dollars to rent an EPIC, and it was the right choice. No regrets.

All i said was there are certain features about the blackmagic that i tend to like over the epic and scarlet. Hear what you want to hear.

This forum is meant for anyone, who owns, or uses RED camera technology. Its a place where "users" can go to get support, interact with "colleagues" or associates in the film business and locate RED merchandise for private sale and get fast accurate and most cases helpful information when and if they run into a situation in the field. We should all try to remain helpful to one another on this support forum. WE are ALL equal and share the same interests here.

Just to keep the debate on a decent level...

The BMC can run on AB batteries just as well as the red's. so thats not an argument.

Also having an internal battery is not only a bad thing. Even though I prefer the side handle and the modular option of it as a internal battery holder.

Think of it as if red would have a fixed battery then people that use V lock's around here would not be bitching about dropped frames all the time, the internal battery would solve it for them as it would kick in when their V lock connection or cable goes bad.

A couple things about the BMC 4k....... ( possibly a great camera btw)

1) I think everybody will be surprised how quickly this will ship (in the next few months)...conversely this is only because of their previous problems with the 2.5k variant and them having to 'warehouse" a whole lot of bodies waiting for them sort out the 2.5 K sensor issue.

2) Because its price point and the above there will be 1000's of BMC 4k out there in no time ....so any hope of a reasonable rental return on these things ain't going to happen. Also because this camera will be popular at its price point who's going to hire instead of buy the thing for a project anyway? Heck I'm sorely tempted to buy just to get Resolve and have a cheapie 4k.

So if your thinking, I'm going to get all this work because I have A BMC .....you better have existing client base...or think again.

3) Professionally this camera will have a place in the pro-eco system...... where, time will tell. However again because of its mass appeal & just like the DLSR it will not replace professional camera systems ie Arri, Red, Sony.....not with this variant anyway.

4) This camera's price is not $3995. There are a whole of add ons that will drive this price upwards, Rods, FF, MBs, Filters, lenses, Sticks, heads, Aks significanlty . I reckon in reality its more like an 8-12k system to get it operational for pro on set use.

So given the above, this camera is in no way competition for Dragon Epic's or Scarlets.

In fact I believe the market for this camera will come directly from raiding the C100's, Panny 100, DLSR world. Conversely this will only strengthen 4K by exposing the mass "pro sumer" market to the benefits of Raw workflows. As we all know its hard to go back once you know what can be achieved with raw.

You miss the argument here. The original thing about the battery here was that the internal battery of the BMCC allows you to hotswap external ones, the implication was that this was somehow an advantage over a Scarlet, whereas in fact the only advantage is in price, as such functionality is really a liable to scarlet users. (Hell when I'm on mains power I have a volt in for similar reasons). The BMCCs battery can be used as an advantage but its not something that can't be easily emulated on a scarlet.

While it likely won't be anywhere near as late as the BMCC that is not the only thing they have ever delivered late, plenty of products have missed BMDs release dates. One or both of these new cameras missing July would not be a surprise merely based on BMDs track record on other hardware releases.

I thought I wanted a RED Scarlet too...so instead I bought a BT RED Scarlet ;)

I don't think all 4k is created equal. The reality is there have always been cheap(er) options for all aspect ratios throughout the dawn of motion cinema. I don't think I would want to work for DSLR rates though. If they can't afford a halfway decent system for the production, they probably can't pay crew well and have low production value to begin with.

I like over cranks, and bought a Scarlet Dragon sight unseen. People think I am crazy where I work. The reality is they might be right, I don't have the client base perhaps even. But I like the images from MX, and I can justify it against all the cheaper solutions. Every tool has its benefits. I like the Red benefits. I mean BMC haven't even finished shipping the first cameras, and have two new ones! What is this, Sony, Canon, all over again?

I like my firmware/hardware updates. Yes you can argue its priced into it, like everything in our society. But who cares at least I don't feel like I do with all these other brands that are constantly pushing slightly better versions of generally speaking partially impaired systems. For example my previous camera is like on its forth iteration already, in less than three years. Obviously Sony sold me a half baked camera just to have the next one slightly better, than slightly better again, and again, like every 6 months until I finally die lol...

I'm done with that business model, good luck to you guys who are into that kind of thing...

Odds are after the dragon trade ins. All the scarlets that were traded in for a epic will be put in the battle tested section for 4k with your choice of mount. (Since they would also try to get rid of the older mounts since they will try to push forward with motions mounts)

I Like this answer keep em coming

i realize that a huge portion of people are off topic. Bring an epic in the Fight is pretty one sided. So if can get a RED Scarlet i will .... i tried to buy one used but seem to be a problem vs buying new i was able to get a Side handle and batteries but then they Show a a 4k camera for 4k i am like WTF .... and i just want to shoot some sh1t . So i think i ll put my build on hold and just write to its time. Thanks for all you feedback and you guys are a cool group of dudes but learn to stay on topic

i guess 8k-12k are your sure that seem high and for 12k i could have a scarlet new and go lite on other items just saying show me a 12k system for BMCC THAT IS NEEDED TO BE PRO. AND WHAT IS PRO? HAVING A LOT SHIT ON SITE DOES MEAN YOUR PRO JUST SAYING
