For those who don't follow Off Hollywood's twitter, Mark and Matthew Duclos and team(s) have tested the Leica lenses on projector and Epic 5k. Said they're sharper than MPs, lighter and smaller than MPs (although heavier than UPs) and, well, just basically ponied up for two sets out of the gate.

Now. The money. How much can I get for a couple of children?:arf:

I saw them at bandpro on monday. they had the res chart up with one of those bad boys are on there. they are literally so sharp, modern charts can't measure how much they resolve just yet, they gotta make a new one just for them.

some really interesting things I was told about them.

your typical MP hits its top MTF when you stop down between a t4-8. that's where the lens is at its sharpest point. you get your mtf in the 400's. the Leicas start hitting it's peak MTF in the upper 400's by t2-5.6 which is where production shoots at 90% of the time. they designed it just to be like that.

separate elements in the optics to give you a neutral look, but optimized to single out skin tone for a more pleasing looking.

replaceable front element if it gets damaged so you don't have to send it back to germany to get it replaced.

and a full close mark on the aperture. you can dial it past t22 to a red dot, and a finger closes over the blades. they built that in for pure black for black shading having digital sensors in mind already.

truly master piece lenses.

how does it handle flares? and what about over exposed areas? how does the lens behave? any close focus abilities?
is there a fall off of brightness wide open with their widest lens? CA?

just curious here, not that i would be able to spend 130 k € for 8 lenses.
i would though :)

it was all indoors so couldn't test flares and overexposure, i couldn't see any falloff or ca in any of the lenses.

the wider angle lenses are pretty close focus, but they ARE planning a 65 mm macro as they told me. as well as a 14 mm, 135, and a 180 mm. that's all later though.

they are everything they promised and more.

Sorry Tom,

but I must respectfully disagree with you and or any one that told you that MP's are at their best from T4-8, that is none sense ;)

I don't imagine that my MP's are special and they are Impressively at the top MTF before they get to even T2 ;)

As far as the LSC's indeed they are a piece of work, and love their look , fill, and can't wait to do a Real World Shoot with some Girls,
to se their Skin Tone qualities, also look forward to test them in a 3D shoot as I will do shortly with the MP's.

i'm just going by the MTF charts the guy at band pro showed me, don't shoot the messenger ;)

they are the competition after all and these are the things they say. both sets are obviously best in show.

Understood Tom, but you need to word it so that it is understood that this does not come from you, as that it is the impression given when you say...

ONE LENS SET TO RULE THEM ALL .....

I am soooooo totally getting these in 2012!

In all fairness, I think that's the "some really interesting things I was told about them" part that he writes immediately before the quote you pulled.

Unfortunately, it's not just the $$$$. Even if you have $180,000 sitting in an account, ready to wire, you still wouldn't be able to get them until 2012 -- as they are backordered heavily from everything I've been told.

One thing about Leica -- and it's hard to complain considering their performance -- is that they have the slowest production of any camera company. Most of their still lenses are impossible to find new, come into stock very rarely and produced at a very slow rate.

What hurts is that these lenses look to be worth both the $$$ and the wait :P

You are correct, Ketch. Pretty much all MPs are diffraction limited beyond f/4, at which they are the sharpest. Although, they are preatty much almost just as sharp fully opened.

I like the Leicas too, specially for their size. Shame they do not have international sales and service network like Arri does.

...Now. The money. How much can I get for a couple of children?:arf:

Someone calculated that average child in Australia costs about $1m to bring up (including school fees, food, nappies, extra bedrooms in the house, wife's car that otherwise you wouldn't need, etc..). :rolleyes5:

those lenses look more and more attractive, don't they :smile5:

Spent every spare moment lately on Sketchup drawing plans for those extra bedrooms. Still, wouldn't be without the gorgeous little ratbags. Maybe I could save the deposit by 2012...

I was standing next to Tom when the Band Pro rep pulled out a chart, and showed exactly what tom said. IT was on a chart.... its gotta be true. ;)

But yea, this is verbatim what they said to us, why these lenses were better than masterprimes. If its untrue, thats no good. Thus the internet debate continues......

That's funny- Leica came to existence as Zeiss challenger 100+ years ago.
How the history likes to repeat itself:rolleyes5:

I never said they were sharper. I only tested them at Band Pro's Burbank office and didn't have much proper equipment. Respectfully, I have to reserve my public judgment until I can see a production set on MY test equipment. Until then... Master Primes are king.

It's unfortunate (for Band Pro especially) but it looks like the still unannounced MP2's will ship before the Lecia's.
