  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Offhollywood & Leicas

I never said they were sharper. I only tested them at Band Pro's Burbank office and didn't have much proper equipment. Respectfully, I have to reserve my public judgment until I can see a production set on MY test equipment. Until then... Master Primes are king.

He he, well said Matthew, I could not agree more ;)

My apologies Matthew. Actually didn't mean to include you in the statement. Rushed and loused up my grammar. Can't wait to hear your full review on them at some stage.

I polished the whole post cause I had really rushed it:

There is no way I would shoot with MPs if I can get Leicas. Unless my DP smacked me in the back of the head and told me to sit down and shut up. ;) That is only a rough impression after about one hour at Burbank, but I was only sharing them with one DP in the room at the same time and I looked very closely at that chart... charts, I know. I looked at a monitor on an F35 but that wasn't the same as bringing home some samples or shooting with them for a month. But bottom line, the 21mm and 35mm which I looked at closely are bleeding sharp, wide open. I could see 200 lines at the corners of S35, easy. The corners looked center-sharp. They told me MTF is measured to vary less than 5% from center to corners. They had virtually z-e-r-o CA, wide open. These could have been used on Social Network, easy.

And remember they are smaller, lighter, and will have uniform --and I believe bigger-- image circles than MP (don't quote me but I am pretty sure). If that's so, and I were purchasing a set of glass like this, you bet I would be thinking of future-proofing for Mostro! So take a look at those image circles as well. I would get them to Duclos, and also test myself on a 5D.

Whoooooooooooooa there cowboy! You saying these are FF35 lenses? I never got any real indication of that before, but it's something someone should be able to confirm or deny this very easily .....

Where did I say that?

I said I would TEST with a 5D, because that would definitely not be covered, and from my own FF35 stills I would draw some petty accurate conclusions on both coverage and vignette.

That would be nice Anthony, but that is not the case.

I don't even think it is physically possible to make an 18mm f1.4. But that has nothing to do with this.

Sorry Robert... but if someone says that Master Primes aren't good enough sharpness-wise, I'd say that they are coming a lens fetishist. :wink5:

We're picking nits here at this point, we've had Oscar-winning cinematography shot on much worse lenses.

Tools only enable the artists. And these will be very closely matched sets. More so for the audience.

Let me also clarify that not everyone would have rights to the back of my head. Though you sir, carte blanche.

It's unfortunate (for Band Pro especially) but it looks like the still unannounced MP2's will ship before the Lecia's.

Where did you hear that? Master Prime 2s? How could they improve them anymore? Aren't the MPs still relatively young?

The Canon K35 18mm is T1.5 and almost covers FF35. Just a tiny-tiny bit of vignetting on the FF format - 36mm x 24mm. No problem with FF35 widescreen (cropped to 1.66, 1.78, 1.85 or 2.35)

So I believe it is technically viable to design an 18mm T1.4-1.5 for FF.

Wow... I would love to see a FF35 still at 18mm T1.5.

Hi Roberto,

Check my thread in "Shot on RED", there's a movie I produced that will open soon in NY. If you check the trailer (on Safari, please), everything in it is wide-open (99% of the shots). There are some 18mm in there as well, I'm sure.

Second post has the link to the trailer.

Nice trailer. Really want to see the movie now.
