  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Success...

But that isn't what was said, and the line that follows it doesn't help. Like I said, it is probably poorly worded on Jim's part and gives off an impression he probably didn't intend.

At the end of the day, the Red is just a tool just like a sponge could also be a paint brush. I've adopted the mindset that there will never be just ONE tool for every job. Sometimes you need to shoot super 16, sometimes you need to shoot Alexa, sometimes you need an Epic. I'm just happy that I live in a world where I get to choose what I do rather than be told what to do. Jim democratizing the industry with the Red One was not only great for Red and it's customers but it was great for EVERYONE. Look at the Big Boys and what they've been doing. Look at the impact. That's what we should be celebrating. Not extra DR, K, box office success.. We should be celebrating the positive ripple effect the BOLD statement of releasing a Red One has created. Someone had to do it and Red answered that call. It would have happened eventually I believe but Jim and Jarred took the reign. I think we are approaching a level of diminishing returns where everything is kinda looking like everything else. Then it comes down to things like trust, reliability and other things people want to nit pick on. At the end of the day I can go shoot something on my beat up 5D Mark II, intercut with my Alexa and shoot some super high speed in the palm of my hand with the EPIC. And nobody will no the difference because a good story is a good story and that's what we follow. We follow the characters not the pixels. Fight on.

This seems poorly worded. Surely you don't mean that a film worked on by 1000s of talented and hard working people over several years was successful due simply to the camera it was shot on?
I knew this was going to be interpreted that way by some. :-)

He of course means that the cameras helped contribute to the $7 billion box office. A camera obviously is only as good as the people who use it, as I have found out the hard way many times as I have had success and failures on projects that have been shot with RED and often it's got nothing to do with the camera. I just failed to use it to it's full potential. The human part of the process can't be stressed enough. I wish I had half the talent of some of the people I have worked with.

What Jim has done is enable a heck of a lot of people to shoot with a camera that produces images that when exposed properly, art directed, and color timed well can compete at the highest levels of the digital cinema food chain. That is indeed a success!

I think you're thinking about 10x harder than he did when he wrote it in the middle of the night. These are forum posts, not eternal Scripture. No professional or anyone who works with CEO/Owners like Jim would even imagine that he was implying Red is responsible for all the success of those movies... so if you know that isn't what he meant, why even bring it up?

I'm only responding to your posts because I truly despise tall poppy syndrome, i.e. the tendency to criticize and cut down successful people, seemingly out of spite, inferiority or boredom. Jim is giving 110% to help us customers have a world class camera, and you feel the need to ask whether he really believes Red is singly responsible for the success of movies that chose to be shot on Red cameras.

Ok, I'm done ranting. Just give Jim a break and don't hyper-analyze his posts. They are meant to bolster confidence, not define the physical laws of the universe.

Game on

Game on

Would the other manufacturers have eventually done most of what RED did? Probably. Would they have offered these new tools at the kind of price points RED sells at? Unlikely.

Recently shot with the F55 and even though Sony engineering deserves due credit; IMO the semi-modular design, 4K resolution, availability in 2013 and the price point would not have happened if there was no RED in the marketplace.

IMO, NAB 2013 is critical for RED. Until this year, even with some missteps, RED led a segment they essentially created and that many pundits dismissed as irrelevant. Until the F55 came out, the Epic was arguably the best value proposition by a fair bit - that gap has narrowed. The ball is in Jim's court, the battle he's been spoiling for is here. RED has been the most dynamic and innovative company in the space, should be fun to see what they roll out.

Cheers - #19

Jim, Thanks for such awesome products!!! RED has certainly changed my life as well. I am filming a 2.2 million dollar film called "BUSTER & SARAH" with my 2 RED ONE MX cameras and then I am going to ROME, Italy for a 6M Action film in October with director Kevin Kent. I have never been happier in my life as a filmmaker for the last 25 years than the day I bought into RED.

By the way, our friend allowed me to enjoy a particular cigar at the lounge we are filming a commercial for him at. I LOVE cigars and I must say your "JJ" is as good as it gets!!! Thats what I call SUCCESS!!! -BEST

Andy, he can't help himself... he has Sheldon Cooperitis. '-)

Success is very hard to define.

I look at it as setting stupidly high goals and then beating them. Then setting higher goals still...

One of our goals was to put cinema-worthy cameras in the hands of many. Pros. Students. Check.

We also wanted to create a tool that the best in the industry would use on the biggest and most important projects. Projects that showed we belonged alongside the best image capture devices ever made. Check.

RED cameras, mostly EPICs in the past 2+ years, are responsible for over $7B worldwide box office. That includes 3 movies that have done over $1B each.

The cameras that did this now cost roughly $20K... and are upgradeable. When we entered the arena... film and digital cameras were well over $200K.

While we have missed the mark on many things... our big picture vision has been pretty good so far.

Just imagine (for a moment) that we are fully engaged in fixing what we have not been so good at. Remember that we are just a 7 year old...

We accept that you expect more from us. We expect more from us.

In the meantime... go shoot something that exceeds your personal expectations. You have the right tool.

Jim

None of that is stupidly high Jim. It was stupid for the mid range competition not to do it! Now all their sales are being sucked away by mobile phones/stills, Red and others like BMD, it will be obvious their moral and business management failings, and who should have been sacked. Maybe their boards would like a copy of that.

All that is needed now is for Red to bust open the Eng sector, maybe with an Eng module case for the Scarlet, and a wavelet broadcast workflow, and ramp up the dslr initiative on scarlet.

The biggest thing to realise with your Scarlet, is that most applications don't require the highest quality, so the the internals of a cheaper all in one Scarlet dslr competitor can be skimped on a bit for pro level 4k video, rather than cinema level, with ready to go auto balanced color settings track. In eng you film with it, hand it straight over, they cut and paste and broadcast. Would put the wind up many expensive dslr"s and cheap cinema cameras, and Arri, because it's color seems to be the only thing people concentrate on.

Jim

that is such a bold statement. The directors, writers, and crew are responsible for those billions of dollars. Not the camera.

David, Jim knows that. It's simply catching him on the phrasing of it. If you replace "are responsible" and replace it with "have contributed to the success of $7B worldwide box office" I think that statement is valid. No doubt, it's mostly the people. The camera they chose to use for those projects were RED cameras, so I don't fault Jim for wanting to be proud of that fact.

Jim is human, let's cut him some slack.

Just give Jim a break and don't hyper-analyze his posts.

Jim is a big boy and wildly successful in two very different industries to a degree that few in the world can or will ever claim. I think he can handle somebody pointing out that he may have worded his late night stream of consciousness post in way that doesn't properly credit the right people. He doesn't need you to defend him :p

Certainly success, no doubts.

When I moved to America, my first time of joining our booth (MAXON) at NAB was when RED announced their concept. 2006. A friend put a deposit down and I admired him for that.
Today I have my own RED and I look forward to upgrade one day, to dive deeper into it. I use RED now for my own little productions as well to teach my students, I share files and explain stuff.

Success: This month my first RED production is nominated for an award. :o) It will be number 9 since I'm here in L.A.. I love this stuff.

Thanks for making it possible. RED's success caries many fruits, not only these fantastic Box Office Records. BTW: Congratulations!
I'm happy to be part of it.

My best wishes for NAB'13.

Mr. Johnson. My "birder" friends will love this. Can you share as much tech specs as you can?

I think that the most reiterate word on my forum posts in these years it's "Thanks". This is clearly a sign of great success, to me.

So, thanks, again.

Thanks Jim,

Yesterday I trekked a few miles and shot one of the highest waterfalls in Africa in 5k, on camera that was easy to Lug.
Try carrying a tripod and any other camera that can do 5K, Today.

What else can one say, just a big THANK YOU.
