  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ODEMAX - where is the info?

OK...I see but really other than Kevin Smith haven't heard any actors or directors complaining about being underpaid or cheated.

In fact most wish they could only get hired by studios to do more studio films. Life in indies is far too harsh.
But the rising costs of production and promo have resulted in studios limiting their output mainly to
the Comic-Con crowd since it's a reliable and fanatic audience that still goes out to theatres and buys tickets.

Pretty much EVERY writer, director, producer, actor I have ever had a conversation with - folks that do indies, studio films and networks show ALL complain about getting screwed on profit participation. So ... if you "haven't heard any actors or directors complaining" - I'm not so sure you are listening.

Here's someone you might know who decided not to just roll over -

Doesn't make sense to me why major studios would lie about profits. They are all part of publicly traded companies. And those companies only get their stock price up
when their movies make money. If the movies never made money the stock prices would tank and all the executives would lose their jobs.

Follow the money...there are like 4 or 5 Billionaires from Facebook all under the age of 40..or was that 30.
There is no such money that exists in the film business.
We are really living in the post exhibition era and profits are both small and hard to come by.
As for Matrix don't think Wachowskis or any actors complained...they all got their millions...even
though by the time the 3rd one came around the franchise was pretty much driven into the ground permanently.

You don't do a lot of accounting, do you.

'-) '-) '-)

I get that you may be trying to goad RED or ODEMAX into responding by posting outlandish statements. (I hope you are successful because I would like an update too, but I think you are just pissing into the wind '-)
Ni. I am not trying to goad red and it is my belief that Odemax is gone and thus there is no entity to goad. Several here have sent them emails and have gotten no response. I stated to them in my email that I would take a no response as their being gone and would so post. All they had to do was to send out a bulk email or post on twitter that they are coming, just a little more patience. or we need another x months or whatever. My statements are logical and are not outlandish. My feelings as a consumer are real. The way they have non acted has firmly made me cross them off my list. Why would an independent producer want to go with them given how they treat or rather non treat the end buyer. Read their last lame post on twitter at the start of Sundance. The reception they got there from potential content providers I would guess have made them go on to greener pastures such as fast food franchises or whatever.

I suspect their fee structure was a complete turn off to content providers. Maybe they ran out of cash. who knows. For me, they are gone forever and it would not matter if they surface tomorrow leaping a tall building in a single bound.

Tthis is supposed to be a thread on Odemax. I understand the thread going on to more generalized topics. There is no info on Odemax and I will assume there is no longer an Odemax.

Heh, heh, heh, heh... Thanks for posting... heh, heh.

Daily Variety just reported that all the major Hollywood studios have bonded together to form the Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition to feed all new movies to certain member theater chains via satellite:

http://variety.com/2013/digital/news/coming-soon-to-theaters-movies-via-satellite-1200005115/

Apparently this has been an ongoing effort for about three years, and is just now becoming a reality. From what I see, it's for finished content, using files as data -- not a real-time process for live events (yet). No word on whether it's 4K-ready or not.

My observation is that coalitions like this are going to try to keep third-party efforts (like Odemax) at a distance as much as possible. One could make many conjectures as to why, but I think the studios don't want to depend on just one company for delivering their pictures. Right now, Deluxe and Echostar are handling the data.

Here is an article I just came across for a video down load service for content providers to sell to consumers. The keep to the content provider is around 85%. No details as to download resolution and speeds but obviously I think content could be sold compressed with the Red software for download into the Redray. I have no details except what's in the article.

The video service is Vimeo. The split is 90/10.

Here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand

The split before shipping and handling (joke) is 90/10. After credit card fees Paypaly etc, the take for the source provider is about 84% of the gross. I love forums. I see there is a whole thead on Vimeo already. Thanks for the link to the Vimeo web site Terry.

Here's to hope...

Here's to hope...

Arguing that the more established players will continue to dominate distribution is as easy as picking the NCAA brackets by seeding, and just as likely to be correct. The media distribution infrastructure is in serious flux and anyone who knew in advance that Netflix would shape shift from a DVD by mail juggernaut into a popular subscription streaming service should go directly to Vegas.

In any case, ODEMAX could be seen as a threat to current theatrical distribution enterprises. Its hard to imagine the studios liked the idea of an "outsider" upsetting their carefully controlled system, heck, they're still pissed about the Feds forcing them to divest the theater chains. Jim may have snuck up on the camera manufacturers but I'm guessing his picture is on dartboards all over Hollywood at this point. Wouldn't surprise me if some powerful folks poleaxed ODEMAX for giggles, but what do I know?

In terms of home distribution, the $1,500 dongle (RR) could severely limit uptake rates. I absolutely love the whole .RED/RR/ODEMAX ecosystem as it offers more quality per megabit than anything else I'm aware of. That said, if H.265/HEVC can carry "minimally acceptable" IQ at 20mb/s, and, can be decoded on commodity chips and/or late model computer hardware it could access a much larger potential market, particularly in the short term.

Ultimately, the key issue in my book is the abuse of data compression techniques in the distribution chain. .RED/ODEMAX offered a shining beacon of hope that out of the babel of MP3@64kb/s and 1080@3mb/s MPEG-2, would rise genuine quality. Say what you want about Jim, but I believe he sees image quality as both a worthy goal in and of itself, and as a differentiator in the marketplace. I sincerely hope positive news is imminent as the time frame for establishing 4K/UHD formats for distribution is upon us and .RED promises better IQ than competing formats.

Cheers - #19

I agree Blair, the quality of compression is nice to have as an option for filmmakers but I see limited potential with the closed system of RR/ODEMAX in the long run. Unfortunately, "better" formats don't always win on the corporate battlefield cough Laserdisk, cough HD DVD etc etc. If ODEMAX is even still going to be a RR partner at this point it will have an uphill battle with the competition not necessarily filmmakers and in the end, the filmmakers will need to follow the money as well.

I have nothing against Jim or Red. Odemax can rest in piece. Forgive me for not placing any flowers on their grave. someone will indeed take their place.

I never count out Red. Before you shuffle dirt onto Odemax, let's wait and see what Red has to announce at NAB in 4 weeks.

Odemax is not Red. Red recently has continually said this. Earlier they lauded their partnership with Odemax. Recently they have distanced themselves from Red perhaps having more concrete information than us.

Red could do it themselves. They don't need a partner. I never count Red out but I never trust their promotional hype that something is just around the corner either. Their corners are at the end of long long blocks so I refuse to get pumped up that something is coming in time to satisfy a need. i am glad i purchased a Sony VPL-vw1000ES to enjoy until Red actually releases a consumer 4K projector. I've been enjoying it for over a year and I'll enjoy it a lot lot longer before Red actually starts shipping a consumer projector.

Just around the corner "at the end of long long blocks." That's so funny and sad at the same time. I suspect that NAB is too early, too, but I am still hoping it won't be too long. Dying to see it, even a prototype.

As I suggested in the "Off Topic" "Vimeo…": what is needed is for a name like George Lucas to offer an alternative way forward through a mass indie distribution site. Some name that will create law and order where chaos/anarchy otherwise looms. Peter Jackson? James Cameron? Ridley Scott?…..?????

PJ and Jim Jannard tag team?

"MainStream" has a nice, ironic, ring to it. ( :
