  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fujinon 19-90 T2.9 S35 Cine/ENG lens...

I've been reading through this thread, and considering shooting on the lens in the next week. Is there a solution to powering the lens via a Red? Does the lens require power to function adequately? We would not need the ENG mode, just using it as a light weight zoom so we can reframe faster. Finally, the crop at 4k is what, roughly 24mm? Was originally looking at the Alura 18-80 since its really the only thing that cover the range we want, but thought this was a better lightweight solution. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

No need to power the lens through its servo. Last summer I pulled it off and just used a heden servo for zooming. It is truly a great lightweight lens.

Just got our first cabrio here. First impressions are very positive. Image quality, breathing characteristics and sharpness are great. Still working on figuring out if we can interface it with our microforce and / or bartech units in house. May be looking to get a c-moton or preston soon. Seems to cover 5K on our Epic's just fine.

I'd be happy to show this lens off to any LA area reduser's, and we will be renting it for around $400/day.

There is a couple options for power cables if your camera does not power it (red currently does not) depending on what you plan to use. I chose d-tap. Got my cable. Couple days ago. And the 19mm is always a 19mm. Yes the fov changes from sensor crop, so use a fov calculator to determine the change.

My main concern is no one on my camera team has used this lens, so I don't want them to get to camera check out and find out we need a power cable even to zoom manually, or that we can't use a traditional servo, but it sounds like we can, we just don't get this cool new feature, which is fine for our purposes. I was worried because I saw someone saying the lens might be misinterpreting information coming from Red bodies, causing focus or zoom to shift. However, 5-6lbs lighter for my camera op will keep him happier, so I want to go for it as long as it works. Have you heard of such a problem if there is no solution to power the lens available? I'd hope my rental house has such a cable available and I'm consulting with them, but you never know and 1st hand experience on set always trumps a rental house.

And yes, its not technically correct but I'm used to people comparing crop by just saying what its FOV is similar to rather than using degrees, but yes, I'm aware 19mm is always 19mm even if you're cropping.

Thanks for your input,

I'd you have the motors that comes with the lens attached and set to servo instead of manual, the lens will creep on you due to the camera sending the wrong kind of signal to the motors. if you take that off its just like any cine zoom

Just unscrew the servo handle on the cabrio and use own FIZ. Today I was playing around with the Cabrio at Chater Camera, it was connected to a Sony F5. No creeping behaving quite well. A perfect combination.

The lens is awesome.

I almost never zoom in shot. I just use zooms as variable primes. I love that i get essentially 71 different focal lengths. My favorites being, 25, 32, 40, 60, 65 , 90. All the same stop, and exactly color match with the same handling characteristic as a prime

We've finally been able to put our 85-300 on a camera. Way fun!! http://rawcameracompany.com/uncategorized/fujinon-cabrio-85-300-first-impressions

We're going to do a little comparison test this coming week. It won't be as extensive or objective as the recent Wide Open Fast Primes test, but hopefully it will be helpful to us and our clients. Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to know about: Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 and 85-300 zooms, Angenieux Optimo 16-42 and 30-80 zooms, Alura 18-80 and 45-250 zooms. We'll compare against a few Ultra Prime focal lengths (as a commonly available base-line reference).

As a director I hate motorized zooms with passion (imo a poor man's dolly ). However having spent a couple of decades in TV land I understand the necessity & the purpose ....sweet looking lens the grip on the side with rocker action zooms brings back the days of digibeta & working with pro Fujinon's or Canon TV glass.

Ill try and reach out to Chuck and see if we can get this into engineering to figure out how to get it going. It is an incredibly great lens. The 18-85 manual lens is pretty steller as well. I just spent a few days with it on a Dragon and it gobbles up resolution.

Jarred,

The 18-85 is potentially the most amazing lens ever made. Simply for the feat. T2.0 all the way through, with 70 focal lengths to choose from, completely consistent, and retina scorching resolution.

It's just simply a technical marvel.

Oh and it's got that special....... Something.

I hope the Cabrio gets motor power from epic. Would make my day....

having the lens run through the camera like it should would be awesome. Hopefully red and fuji can get together on this.

Thanks Jarred! Appreciate looking into getting the RedEpic and Fujinon Cabrio to play well together. Hope it happens soon!

For some shooting situations an ENG/EFP style zoom with handgrip/servo is exactly what you need. Those same situations often benefit from having as little aks as possible, both for weight and to keep free of snags so Heden motors and extra power distro cables are not welcome.

Properly implemented the Cabrio zoom on the Epic/Scarlet could make shooting our favorite camera viable on many more assignments...

Cheers - #19
