  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1099 Small HD AC 7" OLED is new Standard to beat

On AC7, is there an audio bargraph as on Marshall's monitors ?
And a battery level indicator ?

To evalute video noise, is an Oled screen better than LCD one ?

Jean Gerard - what ended up happening? Was the sharpness fixed? Is it good for focus pulling?

Dear Aleem
I would love to be able to answer you but they keep messing up this one and ship it to the wrong address. It's now stuck at ups warehouse and need to wait 2 extra week at least.
After the engineer design a non working unit, after the marketing department lied on the website with wrong pictures to describe the product, it's now the support services who "overlook" my address. They feel sorry about it they wrote me... what a great info.

Of course I ask them to send a new one to the right address but it's seems impossible the last time I ask.
Will see how things going next week.

I was so happy with my dp6 that I can't understand why I'm so doomed now, having to rent other monitor in order to keep working from my pocket.

I just hope to be the only one in this position as ALL the early served oled customers need to return their unit.

Thanks for the update... would love to hear your thoughts when you finally get it.

I got a response from small HD :
" The AC7 does not actually have any of those features you asked about. We are working on a DP7-Pro monitor due out in April that will have all of those things "

My monitor AC7 is finally back after a full worldwide tour around the world. The power supply was not back with the monitor, so I can only use it on batteries for now, I wrote to SmallHD to ask tem to ship it back as soon as possible.

I did few test and was glad to see a lot of good things.

First the sun-hood is a complete different system with 2 extra arms on it + a folding arm on both side. Not too easy to put in a bag anymore compare to the DP6 but way stronger and the monitor can fall without losing it. It's simple to put it and remove it. The sun-hood is a must have if you shoot outside as oled is less brighter than the DP6.

For the monitor now ; some menu got changed and there is now a "brightness" button. It does push the black to become white, but do not really increase the overall brightness. The oled technology is to blame here, not the monitor. Overall, it's easy to use. Out of the box, my sdi signal got a purple line on the side, but the zoom option got this away if I zoom one pixel in.
There is also some funny "focus max" and "focus plus" working more like a peaking closer to what I can have out of the sony camera. The focus in color may be a bit not enough on some situation and this help a lot. "Focus max" is way too much but "focus plus" is perfect, at least you have options.

The only button I can't make working is the "sharpness" one. again, with "focus plus", it does the trick to me and really help for some situation (leaves or grass where the border are not that sharp), changing sharpness do not change anything on mine.

Overall, it's a new product different from the first batch they delivered for sure and you can now use it. There are still the vent on the back and only 2 hole only instead of 4 on the DP6, there is still now battery level indicator.
It's as light as the dp7 despite the extra inch. I always found that 6 was perfect in size and more a bit too large but i might change my mind using it in different position now.

Overall, despite all the trouble I got with this one, I'm finally very happy with the color I can have in front of me.

Again, I will publish some deeper test especially on the color rendering, but the people who tried the first version should give a chance to this one as it's a great new product.
If you do not have any monitor yet, you can still go for the TVlogic 6 or move to the new AC7 and get oled version for the same price which I will highly recommend.

yes the AC7 firmware update to V4 is a must, after that the monitor is outstanding, colour balance is much improved and the brightness is chalk and cheese from the initial outing. I honestly think any 'flimsiness' is largely a perception issue based on the rubberised outer skin and incredible lightness. As the truly insane durability video shows (watch it to the end) the oled can take the knocks, has an internal metal skeleton and gorilla glass front panel too that ive yet to make any marks or scratches on at all and have taken my oled on numerous shoots, have given it to agency who have dropped it off a work table onto a concrete floor and generally mistreated it the bastards.

If the AC7 (particularly the 7.7" OLED) which is significantly larger than the DP6 was made by the same method as the 6 it would be much heavier im sure and people would be complaining about the weight :-) It would perhaps FEEL sturdier but might not actually any more rugged than how they're built now.

The DP6 is still a great monitor and i think smallhd shouldn't kill it off :-) still has a great place and size for a lot of applications. very sturdy and the 1/4-20 mounts on all sides is a little missed. it will be a sad day when mine eventually dies if ever. Very keen to see the DP7 and the addition of onboard hdmi-sdi conversion and SD card recording.

Ive dealt with SmallHD for years now and i KNOW that they truly want the best monitor in your hands for the best price with the best features but beyond that they want you to be happy with it. If your not.. tell them and they'll sort it out till you are... really. They're listening.

cheers

It sounds like a really good choice until RED offers a new update.
Would be nice to get the cheap 599 one and sell it later.

Is it possible to use this in the basic HDMI LED 599 version for Scarlett only with RED sidehandle, without the 5'' touch monitor? Or is it impossible to setup this way.

Small HD has a zero penalty trial with their monitor -- didn't cost us anything to ship out a couple AC7 OLED w/ HDSDI monitors and test them with the new firmware (and panel?).

We're definitely keeping these now. MASSIVE improvement from completely unusable to our new favourite monitors.

- basically an 8" monitor with very high resolution
- image is now bright!!!
- focus assist is as strong and helpful as RED's focus assist on the 5" touchscreen. Which means its even more helpful in this higher resolution and larger monitor!
- focus assist works better without any focus assist added from the Epic feed--and when its applied by the SmallHD to the image, its not applied to the looped signal, which means excellent focusing for the AC without affecting the uncorrected image at village.
- gorilla glass
- lightweight but strong
- gorilla glass
- locking Hirose connector

Dependable lightweight connectors. Solid lightweight construction. Large bright image with good focus assist that works well in a production pipeline (between camera and village). Excellent screen protection without fumbling around or image degradation. FANTASTIC. Double bonus--SmallHD has really nice people.

Hum ... after all different AC7 problems, I hesitate and I wait for see the next Oled Odyssey 7" (Convergent Design), if it's a better one at the same price (so it can be upgraded to recorder).

Did anyone get the AC7 SDI working over the HDMI on the EPIC? Turning off the SDI on the EPIC doesn't seem to activate the HDMI port, it looks like. The monitor's stuck on 'no signal'. i'll try with a SDI cable but wondering if anyone got the AC7 working over HDMI with the EPIC (latest release firmware).

edit: HD-SDI seems to work just fine... grrr. Wonder if my HDMI *ever* worked...

I'm on build 4.0.12 and just tested the AC7 SDI on HDMI and it works fine. Just to be sure, are you going into the AC7 menu and selecting HDMI? It doesn't auto-detect and switch for you, you have to manually change the input from SDI->HDMI.

Boo. No, I didn't even know I had to do that. I'll check it out now. Thanks Kyle!!

edit: And that worked! Thanks again, Kyle!
