  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Microsoft Surface Pro (w/ REDCINE-X and more) - surprisingly great results

I've learned the hard way to stay away from Microsoft products...... zune.
Not sure what lesson was there, other than the Apple ecosystem being far more attractive and, at the time, iTunes was getting the bulk of the content. Zune was a good device with a good service plan and a very good iPod competitor. Most people thought so too:

I was already fenced into iTunes so I stuck with the iPod myself, but the Zune is hardly a reason to have a distaste for MS. In fact, they've been on a roll for a few years now. XP SP2, SIDEWINDER (PC peripherals), XBOX Live, XBOX 360, ZUNE, Windows 7, Windows 8, etc.

So Rob what if you want to hook up say a external hard drive raid AND a redmag reader, will a usb3 hub work and permit this on the surface?

Rob - looks like you've become the official source for Surface Pro, RED and all related technical questions! LOL - you'll be a busy man!

With the Surface, it's pretty much like the spec of some HP laptops I bought last year (as CGI rendernodes) -all i5, intel HD gfx, 4GB etc. I was surprised when I ran RCX and CS6 on it and it worked well enough to actually use (albeit in reduced rez)... so the Surface looks like a handy tool.

Ah, cmon, half the pieces in a Retina MacBook are glued and noone's complaining there.

In reference to opening up the Surface.

MacBook Pro? Why would you need too?

Last I checked it has both USB3 and Thunderbolt.

And older ones have ports for eSATA.

Nope Apple has taken that roll now (distaste).

Still dont matter to me though, they are all options.

Jeff gets the RED/technical questions title around these parts but I'm glad to pitch in!

Correct. This is the exact hub I'm using:

I then have a 3 TB USB 3.0 Porsche external drive connected to the hub, along with the RED STATION REDMAG (MINI). I can transfer files directly from the REDMAGs onto the 3TB external drive. Keep in mind this isn't the recommended bit-by-bit 'secure' copy method. I'm doing drag and drop, but it certainly works.

I also used velcro sticky strips to secure the HUB inside of a LaCie drive carrying case. The case fits the hub, the drive, and all cables. I carry the REDMAG MINI in a larger case with the Epic.

I don't want to sound like a lazy bas***d, but the greatest thing about the surface pro is when I get tired of sitting at a desk I can remove the keyboard, go lay down on the couch and use premiere pro on the tablet, or remote into my editing desktop at our office and start renders, transfer files for review, etc. I am completely surprised how well you can run the basics of most adobe apps with just touch.

Haha Ive been doing that for years with a laptop :)

It's a big difference when you're on a touch tablet that only weighs a half pound.

Agree. Im not a big fan of small res displays as far as editing goes.
Cant trust color values either.
Great tool though if you can get it to fit in a DIT set-up.

Funny how the iPad met a huge wall of negatives when it came down to workflow in regards to touch.
Great to see that other mfg are trying push this technology further.

Picked up a Microsoft Surface Pro today. Surprisingly great results. Real-time playback of 5K footage at 1/2 resolution (15 second bursts) or consistent at 1/4 grade.

USB 3.0 port allowed me to dump R3D's directly onto the Surface from a MINI REDMAG reader. Also back up to removable mini-SDXC 64 GB memory cards or back out to an external USB 3.0 drive (tested with Porsche 3 TB).

Quite the little machine. MiniDisplayPort out also allows for HDMI/VGA/DVI/MDP viewing.

Dude!!!!!! That is sooooooo cool!!!!! Hahaha...

Freaking techmologies.....

Same. I've been hitching it to an Apple LED Display using the MDP. Works great. You can certainly get around the true color concern by doing the same with any other external monitor.

All around, having spent plenty of time with it these last many days, I can honestly say it's an incredible piece of tech and it does raise the bar a solid notch. The Apple iToys just can't hold a candle to this much fuller package.

And since is Windows based, you can calibrate the dammed thing too!

2 weeks+ and no post-honeymoon blues. The Surface Pro is still a great piece of hardware and now a part of my daily toolkit. Great product.

The Razer Pro has a higher performance spec but a lower resolution screen. That's too bad because after handling the Surface Pro, I'd never want to have a lower resolution in a 10" tablet again.
