  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone read Mac Rumors lately...

For you.

Let's not insist that Apple is a universal fit for everyone, shall we?

THIS IS FOR YOU
Who insisted anything? Not sure where you get off making that statement. I have ran 1000s of hours of R3Ds through a PC, if thats what someone wants to do be my guest. If you want to talk about how great PCs are start your own thread about it. this one is about Macs.

Never. Everything Apple does is push the advanced stuff out to as many people as possible without sacrificing quality. At least, not the qualities that they care about. A $15K anything won't happen. It's completely antithetical to their business model, and creates too large of a gap; if you look at their entire product line, each device fits a specific niche across a linear spectrum, all the way from the iPod shuffle, up to the Mac Pro. A $15k computer would create an enormous gap between it and the iMac. That, and the vast majority of people waiting for the next gen Mac Pro wouldn't have the scratch to get a $15k computer, so rather than ending the whining, it would only amplify it.

As for MIC, well, that tech is droolworthy. I can't wait to harness it.

I dropped 8k-10k on Mac Pro 8 core 3.2ghz loaded with ram and storage with no monitor, no pro high end gpu. I have to disagree.

when I said Imac i was referring to the form factor not the product line.

I've done extensive experimentation with thunderbolt for awhile now. And my conclusion is that it fills a big gap where it can simplify a lot of tasks and really puts your laptop on steroids. But in the end a laptop itself is more of a limitation than the port. Immense amounts of throughput has a lot of system overhead. And time and time again I try to run my laptop like a tower and it zaps the system resources very easily. Even at double the bandwidth, mobile computing will always be way behind modern workstations, and there is still a lot to do out there that needs the horsepower. with this latest news Ill probably have to come up with a new solution for my aging computing power, all this wait can be for nothing keep in mind. Next gen tower may not be what anybody wants at all...

I personally wouldn't mind a six core i7 in a tower.

The high-end expandable i7 computer, it's the one thing really missing in their product line up...

What about a new MacCube, with replaceable GFX-card and one extra slot? Nice as both a high-end gaming machine and a workstation.

I searched "retina imac" and found this thread. I'm fascinated by how a 15" Macbook Pro has the 2880x1800 resolution. I was curious about if and when iMacs would start to get that kind of resolution. First post seems to dismiss possibility of retina in an iMac screen for the time being.

That could certainly be an in road to getting 4K to the consuming public. Of course, you'd also need viable online platforms to deliver the content, like iTunes or Amazon. But I guess if the adoption of 1080p to those platforms is any indicator, it would likely lag well behind available tech. I remember when the huge iMacs first came out and they were touting how awesome HD looked on them, even though the highest available HD on iTunes was 720p.

I guess people just don't watch stuff on their computers like I do and obsess over the resolution.

"Retina" isn't just a brand name; it means you can't see the pixels with the naked eye at normal viewing distance for that device. A "Retina" 27" screen would have to have way, way more pixels than the Retina 15" screen. Quite possibly actual 4K. Which puts a huge strain on GFX card pumping out to that display.

I'm not saying it won't happen. But it's no mystery to me why such a thing isn't on the market currently from Apple. Higher screen costs (plus possibly lower yield), more strain on GFX card means lower overall performance . . . that being said, I wouldn't put it out of the question for the very next generation. And I would be surprised if we didn't see it by the generation after that.

Acer showed off a laptop with a 2880x1620 display at CES 2013 and announced "ultra high res" (I am assuming they meant 3840x2160) monitors for this year, which is right on schedule with Intel's resolution roadmap. Of course, there are certain devices beating the roadmap by a few months, such as HTC Droid DNA (and other 1080p smartphones), Macbook Pro with Retina Display, Google Nexus 10, Panasonic's upcoming 4K tablet etc. Given their higher margins and push for the "Retina" branding, I would certainly expect Apple adopt such panels as they are available. Ultimately, it is down to the display manufacturers. These panels will be out on computers and monitors when they can design and manufacture sufficient volumes at manageable cost.

I like the idea of a Mac Cube Expansion Chassie with a 4k Turbo IMAC Pro. Mac has had so many leaks regarding the Iphone, I think that they have really learned how scare the bejesus out of their employees to keep their mouths shut.

Maybe NAB will bring something dope. Fingers are crossed but I'm not holding my breath. I want the MIC or something like it now...

Macrumors had some new info on the MacPro today:

"With more than 120 million iPads sold, it's clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs."

It's an iPad for all our needs!

Just looked at my iPad...where do I plug my ROCKET into?

If next Macpro is to be cutting edge it will need to be able to work on uncompressed 4k-6k moving images. That is 4-5 Gbyte/sec (30-40Gbit/sec) data rate if they are 3D/HFR (Avatar 2). That is well beyond next generation thunderbolt capacity (20gbit/sec channel). Storage for such data rates will have to be served via PCI. Most likely several PCI slots will need to be occupied by coprocessors (Tesla, Phi)- to manage grading/FX for such movies. Again TB won't do.
If the target is set much lower for the Macpro, say 2k uncompressed without 3D/HFR, then sure, one advanced graphics card and thunderbolt will do the job. In fact the new iMac2012 (2013?) already manages fine here (as per Resolve testing).
