OFFHOLLYWOOD

Mark,

Any chance you wil post some r3d snapshots?

David

As eager as I am at seeing these, too - I would guess Mark would acertain that he is somewhat in control of the beast before publishing these...

I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though... -:)

I see some people almost wilfully seem to swallow marketing BS and FUD. I also see some familliar names setting the facts straight.

The mind of ordinary people is small. People are not able to think for themselves. People rationalize according to their irrational needs.

It is disturbing and annoying at times, but we can not speak with nor to everyone.

It is most refreshing to meet intelligence, oppeness and curiosity all in one person - rare find though.

Matter of leaders, innovators and creatives.

Fortunately, reduser has a fine selection of those ... :sifone:

OMG. #6!

I'm having a flashback to 2006.

Ted Schilowitz told me at Sundance that we was going to leave AJA and work with Jim to build this crazy, revolutionary 4K camera. He was so excited. He pitched me the concept, which I loved, but when I asked if he had the sensor and he replied "we're gonna build it" - I got a little worried. But I could see how sincerely excited Ted was about the project and I just had a feeling there was something there. Sometime in March I got a phone call from Ted - he said he & Jim were going to have a booth at NAB and announce the camera to the world - and he wanted me to be a part of it and just be around and help in the booth. I asked if they had a working prototype - "nope". I asked if they had a sensor working - "nope". I said "Ted, sure I'll help you out - but what the hell am I going to do in the booth?" And Ted says "Don't worry. Just be yourself".

A week or so later I'm on a conference call with Jim, Ted and a bunch of folks - some who now work at RED, some were folks Ted picked to help in the booth. The purpose of the call was to discuss what was going to happen during the trade show. Ted & Jim explained that we would take $1000 deposits for a serial number, a place in line - that it would be fully refundable, etc. Everyone on the call was very quiet. It was really just Ted & Jim talking. I asked if we'd be starting with the number "1". And there was a quick side-bar between some of the folks on the call and then Ted announced that serial numbers 1-5 would be Jim's cameras. So then I asked, really without even thinking, "Can I have number 6?" and there was silence - some chatter between Ted & Jim and then Ted said "Sure". "And number 7"? And Ted said "Sure, Mark has number 6 & 7". And the thing I remember most about that call was that I expected everyone else on the call to ask for a serial number - and it was just silence.

Ted called me after and said "I can't believe you did that! One day … you will understand what a big deal that was."

That day is today.

I look back at the early days when we only had #006 (Elvis) and #007 (Bond) - no audio - no slow motion - no 16:9. A new firmware build every day. It was a blast. I called Stuart at his home so often his wife would just answer the phone "Hello Mark". I remember countless meetings trying to convince people to use these cameras. Countless demos.

Things are VERY different now. RED is everywhere. I'm proud to have been right inside that revolution.

And now - the next chapter begins. EPIC.

Helmet on. Let's do this.

I'll be honest, for some reason the story of just trusting something unknown, and that being remembered and rewarded brought a few tears in my eyes. It's a great story!

I still can't believe that people will spout the most ridiculous things (usually being completly misinformed or just lying) and then end with something like, "I should know, I'm in the industry"...

Funny how they will be so quick to yell "it's not full 5K" but just forget to mention that F35 isn't full 1080p, Alexa isn't full 2K, and so on...

Mark

How are you finding the weight with the smaller primes on?

David

They can sling all the mud in the world.

It won't stop EPIC.

It won't even slow it down.

EPIC IS THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER CAMERA IN THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY AT THIS MOMENT.

The ONLY question that really remains is how fast RED can make 'em.

Anyone criticizing EPIC right now has never shot one and seen the images. Nothing comes close.

I know that, you know that. We all know that. Glad you're enjoying Epic.

And a huge congrats to you and the team for having sent away the first "regular" (but handbuilt) Epic to someone outside the major-studio sphere.

Not that Mark is some sort of undescribed dude out there, but still...

It's alive at last!

Cheers and thanks

It is crazy how light it is. I'm anxious to shoot resolution tests with the usual lens suspects and project them. S4s look a little too soft for me at full 5K - but I really shouldn't comment until I can really do proper tests & eval after the Holidays.

Fortunately it's stupid-easy to refute all the bullshit now with some well chosen quotes from Schwartzman, Wolski, Jackson, Fincher et al.

Please do a little "raw motion capture walkabout" in NYC when you can just to quiet all this DSLR video bs.

Great thanks to Mark for posting photos and comments regarding his new prized possession.

I believe it's already been pointed out, but want to reiterate. Jim said they'd be shipping Epic in 2010 and they're shipping Epic in 2010. At so many levels, this new digital cinema camera is a staggering achievement. (For that matter, the RED One remains a staggering achievement.)

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. What an incredible gift to all filmmakers great and small.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

All i can say is, thanks a lot for sharing Marc and a huge congrats to Jim and all members of team RED for this great achievement.

Man Mark. Those pictures are beautiful.

Now go do some tests so I can die inside a little more!

To see this camera now is kind of depressing. i will start to shoot my first feauture film next july and after 7 years trying to get the funds to film, now that im with money to buy the best digital camera to film it (EPIC), i just can't buy it. i think i will have to be prepared for some sony shit or whatever as i need something small like this EPIC. snif :(
