The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

The fact that this post has been ignored speaks volumes..........gentalman's underwater thread indeed?
Well done Pawel and anyone else that's going to be involved with this!!!

Hi Joe,

A warm welcome to the BB thread.

At first blush, it would seem so. I do think however, you my be over-thinking the case. Briefly, this conversation we all share has, at one point in the not too distant past, descended into insult, angst, and vitriol of the worst sort. Thread closure and member bans were the result.

That has all been solved, for the moment anyways. We have apparently arrived at an agreeable juncture, a peaceful fulcrum of sorts, where the intelligent exchange of information, and the balance between opinion, fact, passion and emotion, is carefully measured by all concerned, before posting. The folks who do this work are very passionate about what they do, make no mistake there.

The enormous talent represented here, as evinced by all of the award-winning u/w guys who contribute, their highly valuable and ground-breaking work with all of the major networks and film productions, and I include Pawel in that very honorable roster, is nothing short of astonishing.

In stirring up past conflict, unknowingly I presume, you do us a grave dis-service. I'm certain, my brother, that is not your intention.

Best,

Tom

That's exactly right Tom, that's why I posted this #416 in response to Paul.

Paul,
I generally read this thread because I respect the level of outstanding talent on here.
I'm also well aware of some of the stuff that's gone on over the past year or 2.
Didn't post for stirring sakes, but rather, because I believe that any project of any size
that has the potential to inform and entertain a world audience about nature and its
importance to us all, should be applauded - regardless of who's managed to get it up.

I just uploaded a Stock Demo reel on some images I made in Indonesia- Underwater only.
All images done with Red Scarlet and Tokina 10-17 (+1.4x tele) + Nikon 60mm macro using the an Amphibico Prototype Housing "Rouge"/with
9.25 Glass dome.
When needed I used 1x Light and Motion Sola 4000 and 1x Sola 2000 lights.

Details: Red Scarlet @ 4KHD, 30fps, 7:1 compression, 1/48th, ISO between 320-640,
Basic color correction in RedCine.

The compression with Vimeo seriously compromises the quality - if anyone has some pro tips on how to increase this quality in Vimeo I would love to hear from you

I just received my new production model Amphibico housing-it includes some nice finishing touches....
I will be do a photo shoot and quick review of it this weekend while in Mexico.

If you have any questions regarding this Housing and or its operation, please contact me offline or post your question here.

Actually Joe with the greatest respect... getting initial interest from AIDC 2013 is a long long long way from actually getting a project up not to mention shooting and finishing and getting to market. So when Pawel actually gets funded there will be much time for celebration and congratulations. It's easy to get some market interest but to follow through and complete a high budget project now that is a REAL challenge.

That's fair enough Ross, but I still maintain that even getting interest is a win of sorts and should be celebrated......and well done on all of your great work in the north as well!!!
Still remember vividly your wonderful whale imagery from last year mate

Ross, I partially agree with you.

I personally don't see any reason for celebration just because any film is financed or distributed.

In fact, I continue to be amazed how many films with no story whatsoever and poor cinematography get green lit, financed and produced, particularly on giant screen.

Having a great story supported by great visuals always ignites the biggest respect inside me and I take my hat off before many great cinematographers behind films like Meerkat Manor or March of the Penguins and many others, even if less known or less successful commercially.

I'm happy with the story of my film. It's actually a big part of my life. I worked on it for over a decade and collected more research, footage and observations than it was ever known about one of the rarest and endangered seal in the world: the Australian sea lion.

I lived with them, shared the space, got to know every single individual in the colony, experienced first hand the joys of the birth and sadness of the death. I learned how to interact with them, often by trial and error, slowly gained their trust and respect. I have been in countless situations when my life or health depended on the sea lion. I was never let down. I've experienced sharing, carrying and empathy from a wild animal. I filmed the birth - for the first time ever. Twice.

My post was more about sharing the story with you guys. For the first time I revealed it publicly. Hope you like it. Constructive comments are always welcome.

The market interest is just that. Hopefully it is because of the story.

BTW, We have theatrical distributor onboard and it is going ahead regardless of what happens at AIDC.

No worries Pawel I have 7 big films I am working up at the moment all huge budgets and all have market interest. I have been working on all of these babies for over 6 years as well. All I am saying is it's not a film until it is fully funded and you are in post production with a fabulous script! other than that I would never big note myself until that time.

Joe, you are a true gentleman , thanks for participating mate! Looking forward to your insights here.

Tom,
I'd have to say the pleasure is all mine!!! being able to come on here any time and get a better insight into the underwater world and
what it takes to achieve the level of work you all do, is priceless!!!

More sea dragons.... The last shot was shot with optically modified Nikonos 15mm, so it looks a little bit different than the first three cuts (stock standard Nikonos 15mm).

Hi all,

Survey: We are always designing new features into housings, and our next target is convenience changing from under to over water. The objective is to easily remove camera/battery from the housing and mount directly to a tripod.

The key question: what tripod mount compatibility is preferred? What is most in use? Sachtler? Arri? Something else?

J-

Arri dovetail please! Already use Arri type dovetails underwater and topside so would be nice to have that continuity through the gear. Hope alls well John.

Thanks Phil, I always appreciate and value your feedback.

The modification involved custom optics between the lens and the sensor and results in higher micro-contrast as well as colour filtering. I have been experimenting with different optics for a while and this one seems to work better than others: both on an optical bench and in the field (no surprises here, just nice to see pretty images). The immediate effect is that the last (fourth) cut looks more "vivid" and it is sharper than the first two. This is due to improved contrast and colour. The third one is just sharper than the first two. It's still "work in progress", but finally getting to the "progress" bit :)

A lot of R&D now going into Nikonos RS lenses which should be available soon as an option for DeepX and 3Deep. I can't wait for the results of the Nikonos RS 28mm, which so far appears to be possibly the sharpest underwater lens ever and very useful for medium-sized subjects. I also have the Nikonos RS 13mm here and trying to figure out what it may be good for :)

Great imaging Pawel, very nice.

Thanks Frazier. It is the tool, not the tradesman ;-)
