  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Television Incompetence :/

ketch and I have similar responses. Although sometimes if I need something specific, then I'll just tell them the exact model number of what ever I need and have them search it out for me.

I think Ketch's answer also solves Gary's correct point that some people (especially in the UK at least) that work in these sorts of stores are either young or "moving on." Its a transient job and therefore many just don't care!

So I agree.... "no thanks, i'm fine" does me proud. Now put me in a lingerie store or perfume counter and the sales staff can't arrive quick enough..!

Jedi sales technique... That's pretty funny. Dominik, spare the silly sales people the humiliation for your own amusement. There's no need to be a bully. :-)

Not trying to be a bully on purpose, I was really hoping to talk to someone on the same level about some exciting technology, but he came across as so arrogant, trying to hide his non existant knowledge with rubbish arguments that I just couldn't hold back :/ May the retail gods have mercy on my soul.

The problem is we now have a medium (4K display) with virtually no native content. Why on earth anyone would bother with it when there's no content to take advantage of it, I don't really know.

I've said this a few times, and the more I think about it, the convinced I become - it'll be the next generation of gaming consoles with 4K output that will eventually drive demand for 4K screens, it won't be film/tv content to anything like the same extent.

I went into a Best Buy and had a similar experience, after the "Television Specialist" came over and I inquired about 4K Tv's they may have coming out he answered: "4K... is that a brand?"
I nearly cried myself.

OK... you guys act as if you've never been into a big-box retail electronics store. You actually expect the salespeople to know something? LOL.. The minimum wage employees working at these places don't care. Don't have the wherewithal about them to actually learn about the products they sell, let alone upcoming items. The most knowledgeable dude in the whole store is the pizza-faced kid who works the video game section. He's 10X more likely to know what an HDMI cable is and why you would use it. You would get much the same responses if you were to inquire about 1080p. Also don't go around asking about 4K. The TV's are not being marketed as "4K". They're not 4K. Not in pixel count, not by resolution standard, etc.. They are Ultra High Definition, Ultra-HD, or UHD. Also look for marketing talking about 2160p video.

That said, salespeople won't know shit at this point. The manufacturers don't even know what they're doing.

As for content, the technology to show it almost always comes first. That's just the way it works, always has worked, etc.. It's a chicken and egg scenario. Why produce the content if there is no way to show it? Why produce the UHD displays if there is no content? The audio/visual presentation technology continues to march forward and we would have already had UHD a few years back if not for the industry getting sidetracked by 3D. The hardware will always push new advances because they want to have more features to sell more TV's. Be it more resolution, 3D ability, built in apps, etc... The built in apps and 3D have all but failed in the TV industry, so here comes UHD. Good for us who can produce content at the high resolutions. But our exclusive little club of high-dollar camera owners is about to go mainstream. Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Samsung, LG and a dozen others from China and elsewhere all showed UHD resolution camcorders at CES. Some of them shipping NOW!.

So, finishing in 4K isn't going to be such a marketing bullet point for us RED owners in the coming year. So polish your skill set! The kid down the street is going to get that $200 LG 4K/UHD camcorder this summer and he works for beer and street creed.

4K/ UHD video.... Coming to a smartphone in your pocket real soon.

And, sadly, once it's everywhere, the dudes who sell stuff at Best Buy will be no more knowledgeable about any of it than they are now. They'll just be more familiar with the "UHD" and related buzzwords. Most don't even have sales commissions driving their efforts these days, so it's not like they have any motivation to learn it. If they had a shred of ambition, they wouldn't be working there in the first place.

Sorry if I offended anyone who works at Best Buy or similar big-box retailer. If anyone reading this does work there, I invite you to prove me wrong. You're off to a good start if you're reading this forum.

I had a similar experience in Best Buy a few years ago, the assistant couldn't believe I asked for the remotes to even a 3way Samsung comparison between plasma, LED and LCD.

He said I should buy the (most expensive option, the LED) because it was "brighter". When I finally had the remotes and reset all three TVs it became clear that the brightness on the LED had been set to maximum, the LCD 75% and (cheapest option) plasma had been turned down to very dim (20%?).

My wife and I liked the picture on the plasma best, particularly for watching blu rays / movies, so we bought that.

Thankfully I had done my homework and knew what I was looking for but it was a lesson - I won't be looking to an in-store assistant for tech info again!

I still have to explain to clients about why they need to archive the 5K files to be future proof so no surprise the consumer world is uneducated right now.

It'll happen, and I much prefer a push to UHD than toward 3D... :)

I guy I know that works in one of these electronic mega markets and sells TVs told me that their managers actually had priced the tv's so the last digit in the price was a telling the sales guys what was a good sale and what was not a good sale... it was done on a scale from 0-9 so for example a TV set that cost 3550SEK was hardly any profit, and the one that stands next to with a price of 3555SEK gave not only him a much better sales bonus but was also more profitable for the store. So a TV having a price like 2559SEK for example (ending with a nine) was a jackpot for him to sell. That way he and his sales friends did not need to know much about TV's, just talking the regular sales talk and try to steer the customers more towards the higher end digit prices. Do not know if they have the same practice in other stores though.

This sounds like a very probable scenario for many stores I've been to.

I allmost had to fight to get the tv I wanted (and was there) last time I bought....
And I still dig the 50 Pana plasma...
