  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

I think he means dead end as far as Scarlet X upgrades within the camera itself? Is this pretty much the end of the road as far as any type of upgrades, for those that just bought into the camera with those expectations?

yeah it seems that's it for this camera and everything goes for the EPIC. it would be great to have something to give a boost on the lowlight situation or FPS.

Pretty sure it just means that Scarlet purchasers who were relying on a way to get to a Dragon sensor will be given the opportunity, not Scarlet will not be progressing.

We've seen time and time again that Red never leaves anyone behind. They recently had a firmware upgrade for the Red ONE, that should be a sign!

Here Here... Please tell us new Scarlet adopter who aren't interested in Dragon (YET!!) that we've made the right decision and not bought into a dead end product... Even 24/25fps at 5K would be perfect. not bothered about slowmo etc...

UHHH OHHH, GUYS!!! Hey...LOL How are those DODGERS!!! I think we all need to get past our rants I guess and like JIM said and maybe celebrate the arrival of news of DRAGON. I will be the first to admit that we should tone it down and let the Company do its thing. Im sure they will do right by all who have invested in RED. We are all excited but lets be patient and wait for the good things to come.

......SOMETIMES IM A FIREFIGHTER INSTEAD OF THE ARSONIST......I LOVE YOU GUYS

My request would be to make a sort of round hole sensor window that should be possible to use a wider than 50mm Leica M lenses on Epic 6K Dragon just for photographers!!!!!

+1
there are even more lenses that can benefit from such design.

Jim posted in this thread that he doesn't look at anything as "native" anymore, it's just a matter of where you want to set it based on your noise comfort levels. He just said he felt the "sweet spot" is now a range between 400-2000.

I would say many people will still set ISO to 800 in a lot of situations, knowing 2000 is clean for low light. Either way their shouldn't be an increased need for ND.

If native raw ISO will be 2000, will Dragon include an onboard Neutral Density Filter?

I don't think there is anything left in the "native ISO" thinking. You can shoot ISO 100 to 12,800 depending on how much noise you can tolerate.

I think "ideal" will be somewhere between ISO 400 and 2000.

How did I ever miss this thread last night? Just read 385 posts non-stop.

RED Team; what you are providing us with is absolutely beyond the expectations I was self-prepping for. Fantastic work - and as stated by Jim, we haven't seen the best yet. What will be delivered will once again change our toolset - allowing us to capture and deliver images that were unobtainable before.
I am thrilled that RED is proving itself not to be complacent after achieving so much in so few years.
To think - the roller coaster ride - switching from film and HD acquisition to the RED One at 4K was only the beginning of the REDvolution brought to our industry - our art.

The ride ain't slowing down guys.

Best wishes to our entire community for 2013. What a wonderful way to welcome a New Year!

So what are we looking at for cost?

If the past is any indication we'll get the current value of the body back (if we're lucky), so that would be about $8,000, right?

Then the cost of an Epic dragon will be more than $19,000+$6,000 according to Jim's post here, so maybe we can say $8,000 Epic -> Dragon upgrade cost.

So that makes it a $19k upgrade to Epic Dragon from Scarlet? Or am I missing something?

Puhhh, I read all the posts..... finally my time to add to someone elses reading ;-)
Red Love for the new year - I love it!
Jarred said they are late (originally slated to ship by now), now worries - I have been with you for five years (plus waiting time for Red One - add 2 years) and I know how your calendar works by now ;-)

I am very very excited and happy to see that the best digital cinema camera in existense keeps up and stays at #1, love the ability to trade in Scarlets (I have one),
I just love this ride, I am in all the way!

New Entry Level Line?

New Entry Level Line?

This does beg the question - without a Scarlet with Dragon sensor, what will be the new entry level system?

1) Scarlet - X with M-X will remain the entry level?

2) A 4K 2/3" inch Scarlet ;) Hint. Hint.

I always expose RAW and set ISO later in post. As you know, it's easy to light up the traffic lights even at f22 on a 1/50 sec shutter. There will still be a need for a ND. A native ISO 100 choice/switch would be a great solution.

Scarlet users should be doing backflips :) It has been one of the biggest requests from Scarlet owners to be able to trade up to an Epic.. and that was before we knew just how significant Dragon has become :)

Jarred - just an innocent question...

By the look of it the Dragon Epics are still some time out. I would like to trade-in to non-Dragon Epic now and then pay later for the Dragon upgrade just as any other Epic owner. Any chance of such a option?

Peter

This is truly impressive. Glad to be in the RED camp!

I wonder what the noise is going to be like in those last 5-6 stops though? Would be interesting to know the maximum "noise-free" DR in addition to this mind blowing total DR.

since the scarlet-dragon path isn't an option anymore, i would like to trade up to epic as well (sooner then later) and upgrade to dragon when that is an option....my priority was always dragon, since scarlet is out, it will have to be epic....

word on the street is that the Dragon sensor was reverse engineered from the dash-cam found in the crashed saucer in Roswell

If we're talking conspiracy theories, I look forward to the faux-documentary about reverse-engineer guy called Beau Lazarus, who managed to escape from RED-51/S4 top secret base, placed somewhere deep underground of Hollywood, CA. In the series of short webisodes he would tell his story: how they hired him, transported inside a bus with the windows painted black to secret location, about the time he worked 24/7 in a highly secured tech lab, trying to understand how the alien technology works. Apparently if you can't replicate alien power source, redvolt-sized waste-free fusion reactor, which requires mysterious Element 1623, you're forced to use regular brick batteries, therefore working handheld for hours straight is impossible with our current level of technology. Same about the compact zettabyte data containers, which he knows very little about, only that it's based on incredibly durable quantum nanocrystal tech, completely unknown to the people of Earth. Oh, and the flying-saucer-cam rig works just like our octocopters, though it's floating in the air in a zero-g field generated by gravity amplifiers, remote controlled by alien device called Redmote Pro. Also mentioned the M-Module, wireless video feeds, FIZ and thing called HD proxies. In the last webisode he would tell about the events, which lead to his escape and final note - if one day a digital cinema company will claim their new superior 6K movie camera sensor is a result of countless hours of hard work of human inventors, engineers, hardware and software developers, don't believe a word. It's all possible because of the aliens and when they'll return (they promised to), little grey men will demand every single camera body back, unless you want to deal with an inter-galactic lawsuit...

Hey, wait, it might work as a fun viral campaign video, shot on Red Dragon of course!
Okay, right, maybe too much champagne...

Scarlet trade in?

Scarlet trade in?

Jared - I bought into Scarlet back on Nov. 3 2011. We had a good year with it and were ready to upgrade to Epic. I took receipt of Epic 4048 just before Christmas. I had been asking about the possibility of a trade-in program, but finally couldn't wait for an answer. Now that we know there will be a trade-in program, is there some way people like me would be able to trade Scarlets against Epics already in hand? Maybe use the Scarlet trade-in to cover the Dragon upgrade?

Thanks

Michael
