  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

I am still having an issue with the LCD freezing on boot up with the new firmware - sometimes it's fine other times it freezes on boot up at the half white/half black screen. (It's not a bad LCD cable - it worked fine prior to installing build4)
So no image flip (horizontal) till the next build? Or will this be added sooner?

Are there supposed to be any improvement for REDVolt power management in this build? My quick tests say no. Will there ever be a way to power the camera off completely so it doesn't drain the REDVolts when not in use (when left in the side handle or quad module)?

Also, once I installed the firmware, my LCD screen froze several times on boot up (half black screen/half bright white) and I had to kill the power - this happened twice, and it booted on the third go - now everything is fine. Very odd...I'm not trusting this build yet.

Everything is saying 'Down for maintenance". Any chance of a direct download link Jarred?

Thanks
Justin

Try setting the LCD refresh rate to 30Hz and see if it fixes the problem.

Thanks, Mike. Curiously, how long does it take to "force a downgrade, blackshade etc. if it all goes pear-shaped"? Is the process difficult? I've never been a tech guy, change tends to scare me into not taking advantage of these kinds of upgrades... I'd like to give this one a go though if the interface is really that much better (and I like the reverse monitor feature particularly)

Downgrade camera, black shade, reformat all your SSD, don't forget you also have to downgrade the Redmote, if you use it and haven't got a spare, since 4.x camera build requires 5.x Redmote build, and 5.x Redmote build won't work with any camera build before 4.x (bit of bad planning there!)... I'd allow 30 mins minimum, because things are already going wrong if you're at that point, and more will go wrong; Finagle's Law! It's not difficult, you just have to be thorough, prepared, and methodical about it - like anything else in this business!

* Enhanced AF

Found in FOCUS > [X] ENHANCED A/F with selectable monitor, monitor frequency, and "Confirm Style". Sounds great, but I've got no idea as to what this actually does in practice. Once enabled, the output you defined for "Enhanced A/F" is no longer controllable under SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL. Message says, "This monitor is being used for Enhanced Auto Focus". The device you set Enhanced A/F to run on displays a clean picture. I can't tell what else this feature does or is supposed to do. I've tried enabling this with a number of non-touch monitors -- is a second RED Touch required (and thus a Pro I/O or a +1 Module)?

Anyone have more details on this? I spent more time today tinkering with it and trying to elicit some kind of effect for having this function enabled, but still not sure precisely what it does. Beyond that, we've shot a half dozen more hours of footage today and I can definitely say, this build is solid and plenty enough production-ready.

ooooh. Could this be RRENCODE plugin related?
I dont mind either way, I just want to get the new software on my camera so I can go to bed after setting up a sunrise here in my hotel room in Scotland!

Awesome build! I just hope Horizontal Flip comes soon! Vertical Flip is a little weird... it's basically only good for shooting towards yourself if your in front of the camera. Which I'll basically never use.

Jarred-
It sez "/Epic/..." - is this applicable to the NON-LCD _Scarlet_ users too??
or...

???

Yes. These are the force_preset files for either Epic or Scarlet to enable menus on HDMI or HDSI.

Couldnt resist and shot on my scarlet with build 4 on a commercial shoot today. 12 hour shoot and the only issue I ran into was that my smallHD DP6 was acting kinda crazy, I was getting a sort of studder double image during record and playback. But the actual files were recording fine so I went with it. The quicker black shade was a huge help as the climate was changing rapidly throughout the day. The sleep function was such an awesome option I used it quite often. She performed like a champ awesome job on this new build.

Rob, I think Iʻve got some answers on this feature. The key word seems to be "confirm", as this appears to be a feature to enable a more sophisticated focus confirm than before possible. Hereʻs how I found it works, assuming "Enhance A/F" is checked and Focus Mode is "Confirm".
I had a Canon AF Lens on the camera while testing, but it doesnʻt seem to matter if AF is switched on or off.

Confirm Style is set to None, the Center or Spot focus point indicator changes from Red, Orange, Yellow and Green to give an indication of focus.
Confirm Style is set to Circle, there is a Yellow Circle that surrounds the focus point indicator, the closer the Circle is to the center, the more in focus.
Confirm Style is set to Bar, there is a Vertical Indicator next to the focus point indicator, the higher the level of the bar icon, the more in focus.
Confirm Style is set to Pie, there is a Pie Shaped Indicator that takes the place of the focus point indicator, the more complete the pie, the more in focus.

What I canʻt figure out is what this has to do with the HDMI Monitor, as I had it hooked up to one during this test and saw no changes other than the fact that the monitor output changed to Clean.

Video??

Video??

Hey I'm fairly new to shooting with my Scarlet I only had it for a couple weeks. I was just getting used to the old firmware which I feel is great. Is there going to be a tutorial video on what all these new features bring to the table? Just wishful thinking for a newbie to the Red family!

Awesome. Yep, just confirmed your finding here. Switching focus mode to "Confirm" did the trick. Now I see the new feature. This is cool. Appears to be bugged with HDMI output however -- as you also indicated. Clean output only.

This is a nice enhancement. Helpful to have an indicator like this, particularly when using the EVF or 5" monitor.

May I ask then what the majority of folk on ehre will be doing about using this or not with commercial shoots? It seems that everyone on here has already installed the update so are you all just going to downgrade before working again or are you going to roll the dice?

* Added Vertical Monitor Flip

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL > and then [X] Flip/Mirror UI and [X] Flip Video. With both enabled, you'll flip the UI and the video upside down on your monitors. This doesn't change how your footage is captured -- only how you interface with your footage on camera via monitors. This is useful for more unusual mounting positions of the touch screens, including a horizontal folded out option that treats the screen more like a flat touch surface.

Something here I don't understand. According to this I´m supposed to be able to turn my EVF/LCD upside/down and shoot, right? Except that I´m not able to do that, because Jarred said that horizontal flip wasn't enabled, and that would also affect how media was recorded (meaning: recording a mirrored image).

Am I wrong? Or is that description text wrong?

(The deal is, that I want to mount my EVF upside down and get a correct picture. And not have my SSD recording a mirrored image).

+1 I would really like to have a back button so I dont have to go to the main menu and re-navigate through the menus when I am deep in them.

To go "up" one level in camera menus:

Touchscreen: tap the menu icon in the top right corner
Side handle: press the silver button just above the jog wheel
REDMote: use the Menu button
