  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Firmware upgrade 4.0 - What do you think or wish might be in it for Scarlet

If my go pro can do 4k 15fps, scarlet should be able to do 5k 24p

Haha. I hope you are joking about this. Several people I have talked too seem to think that their new GoPro's stats have anything to do with the internal processing power of a Scarlet.

My peanut butter and jelly sandwich tastes like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, therefore my chicken sandwich should taste like a medium rare filet mignon.

You guys crack me up.

We all want 5k 24p, but that doesn't mean it's something that can just be turned on if the camera can't handle it. If it were possible like Peter M. has suggested I'm all for it, but lets use math and logic to ASK for reasonable features to be implemented into future firmware.

RED has told us on several occasions that full sensor 5k @24p is not possible on Scarlet.

They have...where? I thought that would be enabled hopefully through firmware. I missed that

Well there is this one for starters:

On Scarlet? No. You are getting everything we can squeeze in that box for this price with the specs we posted. If you need 4.5K, but a used RED ONE or an EPIC.

Jim

That was 11/5 last year. Both Jim and Jarred have reiterated this point several times within the last 13 months. Feel free to search if you would like to see more examples.

Again, if 5Kws is indeed possible I hope they will implement it. That would bring this camera to the next level and piss on the competition. All I am saying is that we have no ground to assume that we will ever see this resolution/fps combo out of that little grey box. I love the cam either way. It is so much better than anything in its price range on the market IMO.

Or there is this one from Jarred from the day before Jim's comment:

5K is 60% more pixels than 4K. Shooting motion at 5K makes a difference. And that 60% more takes a lot more horsepower. So is framerates Important to some people.. which again takes more horsepower.. and so does compression.

We didn't invent the big brother/ little brother concept.. it has existed since the beginning of time.

What makes a $100 Pentium 2.8ghz CPU different then a $1000 Pentium 3.2ghz CPU.? they usually come out of the same oven...

When chips and sensors go through testing, some can perform faster than others and handle more speed/data than others. It's called yield, and it is not artificial. You get parts that can handle the speed, some that cannot. Instead of throwing all those ones that can't keep up, you run them slower and give them a new life. Pretty simple stuff.

I agree I think 48 fps at 4k and 24fps 4k HDRx would be way more beneficial to me than 5k... By a long shot. Not having to uprez my 3k for our final master would make me a much happier director. The HDRx thing is ehhhhh I rarely use it so I could still be content to uprez

On many occasions I have been able to overclock my computer to run much faster then rated. Give us the ability to overclock the proc on the scarlet! If we burn out the chip, well then, we'll have to buy a new one. Or better yet, let us upgrade the cooling system on the camera? Water cooling is much more efficient than air alone, not to mention that the heatsync in the camera is not the best.

STILLS!!!!

Lets get the stills functions complete, push the shutter button and take a pic (mark a frame) or what ever not sift through xyz frames...

I wish I could use strobe lights, otherwise that port on the side handle is only a nice decoration.

Epic's 5K WS is only 25% faster than its full 5K. (120fps vs 96fps)

Why do people think Scarlet's 5K WS could be 100% faster than its full 5K? (24fps vs 12fps)

Not that I'd turn down 5K WS @ 15fps...
Because Scarlet only needs to add 12fps, think about what you are saying for a bit.
