  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Stuart- just want to give a big congrats to you as i know this has been years in the making and I know you had a big hand in this for those joining Red late. I trust a whole slate of people from Jim to Jarred etc were involved but I just want to say thank you for the tenacity in bringing this bad boy to market!

Thanks for those kind words Tim.

There is a very talented group of people here at RED (and ODEMAX) who have worked incredibly hard to bring the REDRAY 4K system to market.

You already know some of the key people - Jim and Jarred of course, plus Graeme, Rob, Ted (and Jon).

But it's really our priveledge to be the public face for all the members of the team responsible for the execution of this idea.

I really can't thank them enough.

Hey Stuart, Deanan leaving RED wouldn't have anything to do with ODEMAX, would it? Maybe not, but I just thought maybe he's still around. :)

Remembering how psyched you were over your Rocket Break Out Box, I can only imagine how GaGa you'll be over RR...

;)

How did you guys keep the lid on ODEMAX? With all the pieces that appear to be in place, it seems there would at least a few leaks here and there. Even area 51 seems to have had some leakage.

We locked Jon up in the office next to Jim and I for the last 12 months and we never let him leave :)

That's what I had asked earlier: if we connect 4 x 1080p panels, would the player "recognize" them as a single, unified 4K display and map all the 4K pixels onto the 4 panels so that the whole image appears as a 4K image?

Yes but can you mount 3 or 4 sets vertically so 1920 wide by 3240 tall. Can the .RED container/player support that?
And why has everyone ignored the fact that this does not have a redmag slot and does not play direct R3D files.
Will you be releasing a version that has that. Would make previewing R3Ds easier before editing.

If the original source image was a 4096 x 2160 or 3840 x 2160 frame, then yes it would. Each of these four 2K or 1080p outputs will display a quandrant - TL, TR, BL, BR - that together make up the overall frame...

To exploit this in a different way, composite (for example in After Effects) a master 3840 x 2160 frame from four 1920 x 1080 frames where the four quadrants align in a different phsical arrangment - such as horizontal OL, CL, CR, OR, or vertical UT, CT, CB, LB...

... lots of ways to use thisin digital signage applications.

Marketing your film has and will not ever change. This is the responsibility of the producer/distribution company. We are not trying to solve all the worlds problems here. Only one of the biggest, and solving the P in P&A is still a huge, and an 'old boy' network that is broken.

Having said that, you are totally right. You need to market your film. But even the big studios are realizing that the traditional TV buys and billboards are not doing what they used to. And a savvy marketing mind, knows not only how to sell, but what movies to make and sell. RED never said that just because they made cameras better and more affordable at a high resolution - was going to solve the problem of still needing talent behind and in front of the lens. We're not saying that here either.

Odemax does provide however trailer delivery, online and theatrical, analytics and marketing tools that take advantage of what the Internet is good at. But like every movie out there, 'story is king'. The interruption age of advertising is over. But as filmmakers apply their skills of making movies to the task of also advertising them with 'story-based' rather than 'interruption-based' advertising, you'll find that even advertising is cued up for a major shift. We just need to solve this problem first, so they have something to sell.

I think my probablme is.. that as a producer, we do almost 90% of the work of making a film, and end up with 3%... Quite literally rapped but sales agents, distributors, studios, corrupt studio accounting...
If you can fix this Jon, Im yours for ever.

Confirming what industry pundits, me included, have believed for a while, NHK have confirmed that they will not broadcast 4k and will jump from HD to 8k.
To confirm this in the light of 4k developments takes some of the uncertainty out of the waiting game.

Watch the rather sensible BBC report here; http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/9774380.stm

This leaves on-demand streaming the primary means of distribution of 4k, with RED leading the field.

NHK also say that in its present form, 3d for home use does not interest them and 8k will be 2d only.

.r3d files are raw files representing sensor data, while .red files are clearly some sort of rasterized b-frame stream. It's understandable that they are completely different things since they serve completely different purposes.

I don't see what the red ray player has anything to do with the capture format.

Just thought it would have been a usefull feature. To be able to preview directly from a easy standalone player to a big screen so you can wrap a shoot confident that all of your source material checks out. Without having to copy to a computer to play/preview. Guess i will wait for a REDray version 2. Just seems like that would be coming around the corner.

I think a computer + RED Rocket is probably a better solution for that because it lets you do a one-light instead of being locked in to the camera settings you shot with. RED could put that ability in but I take it that the hardware to decompress R3D files is quite different to the new distribution format and it would require additional components (meaning higher cost).

I don't see how an inexpensive way to debayer r3d files in realtime to 1080p fits with this device at all. This is just a playback mechanism for finished and rendered films, as I understand it.

I guess i was just hoping for a REDRay "studio" version or "pro" version of the device at even a more higher price than the current version that would give me those things i mentioned plus the ones that this device offers. Honestly we know nothing about the cost of a feature 4k film to download. What if they were $50 each? I would never buy them. But i would still use the player to play my own rendered projects and source R3D files if a more capable version of this existed.

Hi Jon Farhat,

As an independent filmmaker, Odemax sounds like a fantastic platform!

Can I make a suggestion for Odemax (you may be doing this already)? Being able to personalize/customize your channel with bio, photos, trailers, links, news, merchandise etc would be hugely valuable to filmmakers. Connecting with and building your audience / fanbase is an important part of sustainable filmmaking today. It would be great to be able to build that hub within Odemax, so it becomes a place for filmlovers to connect with filmmakers, not just sterile and functional like youtube.

And one question: On your channel, can you link to movies from other channels? Eg: could you have a “channel” dedicated to reviewing others movies with links to those movies (but not participate in the revenue)? Amongst the sea of videos on this new platform, filters like reviewer channels would be an important way for many to choose what to watch. Or a film festival channel like Sundance that provides (optional) links to the films they’ve selected for their festival, but doesn’t participate in the revenue. Again, another opportunity for the way people can browse.

Great job on an exciting initiative!

Sam

Thanks for that interesting link. Believable and sensible.

OMG, that means a larger fish devouring all the others? What a shock.

Heh Heh Heh Jarred That would not be as Bad as some may think with the Bar,cool cars, and other secret stuff you guys have in your "office" :)

I would like to use RR to preview 3D dailies in 3D. Do I need one or two RedRays to play two channels (3D) R3D content? And, if so, does it do simple HIT. Or, do I need to convert to .RED files firrst in RedCine Pro-X?
