***** This is Intended for the NEW REDUSER Community Member as an informative of the Reality of the COST of a working RED ONE You just Purchased.******** not a complaint in any way trying to deter or make you think twice.

So, you Purchased a RED ONE MX CF/SSD which ever.

I Purchased an R1MX w/SSD.

So far this is the Tally to get the Camera Somewhat Ready to Shoot.

$4,040.00 for the Body This includes the 2 day Air Saver Shipping.
$530.00 in Accessories, Specifically ( PAir of 19mm rods, AC adapter, two Universal Mounts, 1 Top Mount. 4 8gig CF cards, LEXAR CF card Reader,Power Cable,)
$210.00 Nikon Mount
$332.00 CF Card Module, two additional 16Gig CF cards.
$325.00 RED Cradle
.

Stil Need to Buy: RED Monitor. EVF, Bricks or Alternative with Charger, Another Top Mount, Base plate, and So on. I might be Missing Something.
So lets add all of it up estimating I get the Rest for an additional $3000.00.

The Full working Camera, Since I already have pleanty of Glass from Shooting with My Other Cameras, both Nikor and Nikon and Canon.( oh Yeah Birger mount $2000 for canon Glass)

Now the 4k for $4,000. its more like
$10,351.00 with birger mount
$8,351.00 Shooting Nikon.
I wonder why Some of Us just dint save up for the Scarlet.

Not Ranting, I love the Fact that I purchased a Red one, but Now I am Considering the DSMC route since Dragon is Really where we all want to be anyways.

I tried to convince many newbies that scarlet was the way to go.

Yep - the R1 deal really was for people who already had an R1 body (or 2) and wanted to supplement it. OR for a collector who just wanted to own a R1...

which is a DEAL! I was planning on buying one after I came back from a feature. But sadly they sold out in a week. I think most people who bought the BT REDone already owned a EPIC or SCARLET, and it was a cheap route to just add another camera to their arsenal. It would of been a extra 2k for me to get the REDone up and running on my setup.

It was the same for the R1.

Purchase 18k, got up to 30k before we could actually take some shots. Even then, it was bare-bones. Some of the scenic footage taken back then I can still use for our feature on the Epic now. Unlike my last projects shot years ago in SD on a Canon XL2, they are useless to mix with any HD+ footage.

Thought both over.. wanted some of the features that R1 has and Scarlet doesnt...
still cheaper than the F3 package I bought a year ago...
or the used f900 I bought 4 years ago..

I spent $27,677.57 USD to get to a working Scarlet package. Which does not include lenses and tripod. My neighbor bitches about the cost of owning his sailboat, all I can do is smile.

27k is the following, which is pretty basic.

Scarlet-X, AL Canon mount, w side SSD
Pl Mount
RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD
LCD CABLE (2')
(2) 128GB Red mag
(1) SSD reader

(6) Dionic HC batts
(1) TWO-Q Charger
(1) Tandem 70
(1) AB battery plate for Scarlet
(1) Top handle
(1) Hand Held rig
(1) 15mm LWS base
(1) Pelican 1550
(1) BT red rocket

Actually. This isn't quite the case. I bought my first RED recently, and I have a working rig for around $6,150. I cut a few corners, but I wouldn't say I straight up cheeped out on anything. My total cost is a bit higher due to needing hard drives and something better than CS5.5. But nonetheless, if you really try, you can get it down to a lower price.
1. Drives, not SSDs or Compact Flash. Not saying they're needless, but they're expensive.
2. Off-brand LCD, quick way to cover your ass.
3. Yes, Nikon glass is a savor, even if you're not a Nikon user. You can get some cheep, non-AI lenses.
4. Off brand rail components. Not cheep and crappy, I just used 15mm rod accessories to save money.
5. Get a nice, but not super nice matte box. Something to put filters in and protect from weird lens-flares.
6. Follow focus. Invest, but don't spend three grand on it. You're driving photography lenses, a two hundred dollar follow focus isn't going to look much worse than a two thousand dollar follow focus. These lenses are rough in the focus ring, they get better but not perfect.
7. I skipped over battery for right now. Not permanent, but AC power does the job, and extension cords are cheeper than Bricks.

So, is my way perfect, no. But if the idea is to shoot 4K for cheap, this is how you do it.

you can do 4.5k and 120fps and 2k though and spent very little. seems like the better deal in the short run. i bought scarlet and am awaiting to dragon hoping i can get some more overcranks at higher res, if not i'm gonna start working on my twixtor...

my half baked package=no batteries, side handle, lenses, 1 mag... i use my friends nikkors, and the mags a 256gb so ive been okay so far...

im awaiting to get batteries. i like paglink or bebop i think, gonna work on that next and buy some nikkors and some support gear, more drives, new mac.... and maybe a epic...

Just a Reminder 100 percent of everything purchased is Used. INCLUDING THE RED1.

If it's any consolation, I looked at some past footage and wondered aloud if that was from an Epic or R-1 M-sensor I traded in. Checked and found it was indeed from the R-1 M.

in my case, I already had a good onboard monitor, mattebox (es) lenses, tripods, follow focus and bridgeplate system..
have batteries, and know how to build my own bricks. (And have a plethora of ac adapters)
I need battery interfaces for onboard use (ready to go on a dolly or tripod0
Bought xlr4-R1 lemo power cable (because I hate soldering lemos)

I want the better EVF, and the larger monitor, and fancy brackets and hot swap battery abilty...
and SSD drives.. so I bet I end up at $12K by Easter..

though to just be able to add a 4K option for shooting is going to be possible in my case for around $5200 (very bare bones.. recording to a red drive, using a non RED monitor, and using an AC power supply

you did know that before you bought it. didn't you ???
buy every camera you want. you will need support, lenses, accessories. and the prices are not low for this things ;-)
not only for red one, scarlet and epic.

by the way: a sachtler 20 fluid head is not as cheap as yout bt red one...
the production of a a sachtler head did never need the amount of r&d as a red one did. i think sachtler sold a lot more 20 head than red ever sold r1's.
and still the head is as expensive as on the first day...
so, is the red one cheap ore expensive ???

go out, shoot, have fun doing this and earn money instead of complaining, you have one of the best tools for that :-)
best wishes, norbert

p.s.: and don't think about having your equiment "complete" any day. you will never have all the tools you want or need. rent the tools you do not need every day...
