  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New pricing...

Will it be Nov 2nd for RED Europe to be up and running with new pricing then? I'm in limbo with a camera landing on UK soil, finance in place to purchase it, and yet I can't pay you LOL! Such is life...

I hope the prices are reduced as much as possible, so that more good cameras will find their way into the hands of low-budget filmmakers.

Agreed! There are a lot of talented people whom if they had the technology, could make better images to tell their great stories! (I guess goes the same on the opposite spectrum, but I think the positive side out ways the negative by leaps and bounds!!)

I'm on the same wavelength here.
Hoping for a significant price reduction.

I hope there isn't that much of a shift. But that's just me. I hope Red isn't about to go prosumer rather than aim at the pro market to my mind and flood the market with cheap cameras - like when TV was became widespread and cinema had to force people out the door using widescreen - the goalposts will just shift. I don't see Arri commencing a race to the bottom. I'd rather they worked on making the cameras work for the pro industry with higher DR, more organic picture and workflow. Again, that's just me. I appreciate not everyone will feel this way.

+1!!!

Let's lock this thread before it turns into the 100+ page monster like the other one.

Let the debate rage after we have real pricing information.

What about anything Red has ever done looks like they are "going prosumer"? That is just crazy talk...
In reality..at this moment..I still believe Red has the highest quality digital cinema camera on the market, just ask the people that made The Hobbit, The Social Network, The Amazing Spiderman, etc, etc, etc.

not just you... +1

nothing too manic/turbulant... nothing that adds to Reds brand reputation of being less stable than Arri. A smooth incremental price adjustment due to manufacturing cost changes is fine but a manic loud change feels statigically desperate.

Brand equity is tricky to build and easy to burn.

I sat in the cinema last night and watched a film that painfully suffered from a lack or resolution in the aqucsition format (Bond). If you are lossing battles when you have the superoir product then it is probably very prudent to be very carefull with all big brand equity effecting moves.

That said I am sure JJ apreciates this and will take an apropriate line.

Yeah I don't see how lowering the Epic's price means "going prosumer". It's still the same exact camera -- the best camera on the planet right now.

I'm sure Red is cooking up all kinds of crazy, no-holds-barred sci-fi shit that will be expensive when it first comes out. I don't think we have to worry about that.

From the desktop revolution in the late 80's and early 90's thanks to the Mac, to the widespread availability of digital cameras, to everybody and their brother building websites and apps... affordable access to production tools is not the enemy... creative talent and skill will rise to the top even if the market is flooded with the tools. The really great DSMC artists can charge a premium to the really successful companies, the mediocre artists can charge a fair amount to companies that can only afford their not-so-premium pricing, on down to the mom and pop shop that hires their neighbor who has a Scarlet to do a YouTube video for them. There is plenty of room for everyone in the new media based society we have, and if Red sells a million Epics because the price is that low, then good for Red and good for business and the arts. Competition is a very good thing.

There is a conflict in my posts about when we will post the new pricing structure. In one post I said Nov. 1st and in another post I said Oct. 31st.

The correct date is Nov. 1st and at about 5pm PST.

Sorry for the confusion.

Jim

I am very sorry to ask like that BUT nobody knows what happened to RED PRO Zoom 17-50??
Will it be available for sale again? THANKS JIM.

I have puppy dreams of having an Epic and eventually one with Dragon.

Main thoughts:
- the price is reduced to remain highly competitive with cameras coming down the pipe.
- Scarlet isn't left behind in power/performance against the new competitors.
- that there's a path to Dragon for both Epic and Scarlet.

Anything can happen. I can see an upgrade path from Scarlet to Epic. I can see a two tiered upgrade path to Dragon from Scarlet. I can see Epic dropping in price about 30%-35%. If it goes to 40% (crazy talk, but who knows) I think we'd all go gonzo for that. I have no clue on what exactly will happen to Scarlet pricing, but I don't expect to be as drastic as a cut compared to the Epic price drop percentage-wise.

The new beasts were exactly what we thought they'd be in terms of power and performance. Currently the new guys have the sensitivity edge, but Dragon's on the way and I suspect it's gonna be more than a 6K and dynamic range boost. There are more advanced cooling methods and certainly other ways to adjust sensitivity rather than using mechanical built in ND filters.

I'm excited right now because there might be a more powerful camera in my hands. Red has the advantage of being able to drive and push this market from their position. Red is the X factor and the larger companies know that.

Thank you. I was spending too much of our limited power supply post-Sandy on these forums. ;)

Till tomorrow then @ 5PM PST.

Spoken by a man that understands that technology alone does not create art. People do. Tom Lowe, I love this f*cking post.

That said, if you want to make art for a living, it helps to shoot on RED. Haha.
