  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Secced Tripods

I have access to the Reach 7 this Wed/Thursday.
Using a Sachtler 20 to test, what should I be looking for as far as testing?
My only experience with the Sachtler is how heavy it is to lug around :)
And can I get away with a Sacthler FSB8 thats rated for 20lbs?
I dont plan on loading the Scarlet up with anything like ABs or heavy metal.
Just the basics e.g Matte Box, rods, and handles.
 
If you are going the knock off route, you might as well compare it to the E-Image tripods.

You think the FSB-8 is good enough for my paltry set-up?
Scarlet w/DSMC Side Handle, REDVOLT, x handle, x shoulder rig, 5" LCD Touch, Quick Release and 48 SSD.

I would have to find one.
We dont have much for local shops here :(
We got tons of snowmobiles ;)
 
For weight, yeah no problem. I dont like how the Sachlter carbon legs cant go very low. I would recommend getting the miller 3 stage carbon legs (they have little springs on the leg spreading mechanism) or the Manfrotto 75mm carbon legs (i have these but they dont have the spring in the locking mechanism that can get jammed up sometime in cold weather).

You do sacrifice a bit of stability in high winds and when shooting extreme long lens with these type of legs though, the single legs just are not as stiff. The Oconner 1030 and Sachelters 18s & 20s will do you better in those circumstance. But if mobility is key, this is a pretty damn good set up. I strap this on my backpack and ski, climb and hike with it, it is the right trade off for head performance vs size and weight for me.

Thanks Dane, checked out the Miller Stage 3s.
Lowest height 9" crazy.

One last thing, do you have the FSB-8 or FSB-8T?
Cant seem to figure out the difference.
 
I have the T version, I think. With the sliding release plate, not the normal Sachtler "chip" plate attachment.

The great thing is that this plate also slides into manfrotto heads, I have small manfrotto heads on our monopods, sliders and jib. Makes for super quick camera transfers!

Im testing it with a RED MX plus gear, Ill bring a weigh scale :)

I would HIGHLY recommend testing one out before buying. The specs on paper don't mean much! And make sure you put your camera on the tripod when you test it!

THanks for the input. Considering I find Manfrotto's to already be subpar in all respects for pro use, this doesn't bode well for Secced.

I can tell you that Secced are definitely not re-badged Sachtler. The two companies have nothing to do with one another. Or at least, Sachtler has nothing to do with Secced!

That's EXACTLY what happened here... which is why Sachtler is now made in Costa Rica. The salesmen for this company told me in a visit that "they shut down the Sachtler factory at 5pm and open the Secced factory at 6... they don't change anything... they are the same product!"...

I did a little bit of searching and noticed Secced has been around for over 5 years now.
You think by now they would have stopped copying Sachtler.
 
I just discovered that these tripods are built on expired Sachtler patents and Secced jumped on them.

Man the stuff you find out there ;)

Ive been playing with the Sachtler 20 here at work.

If the Secced is anywhere near close to that ball head, maybe Ill bite.

I really wanted the FSB-8 but a 20 lbs rating might be cutting it close.

Of course Im talking from no experience with a Scarlet here :(
 
ha ha. Patents is one thing but that doesn't mean the replicated build quality.
