  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tell Apple you want R3D native support for FCPX!!!

I believe they will roll it out with h.265 and their obviously upcoming but still unknown QFHD/4K display offering sometime next year.

The FCPX website states that RED support (along with MXF support, Dual Viewers, and Multichannel Audio Editing Tools) are all due for "2012".

I agree that any Apple "Retina" iMac/Cinema Display (as well as the MacPro replacement), and any implementation of h.265 are unlikely until later next year, we won't be waiting that long for RED support. In fact, I'd wager we'll be into FCPX 10.1.X territory by the time we see that hardware.

If you were fighting a grueling war with Smsung, HTC, Google, etc. for the mobile phone, portable OS and tablet markets, would you really allocate your best developers to work on a non-linear editing application?"

I think you would have to say "No."

What would give you reason to believe that those streams of development are fighting for the same talent? While I don't doubt that the FCPX team shares talent with other Apple's A/V apps (Logic, iMovie, Aperture), it would seem to me to be an entirely different discipline than the iOS group. Like asking a gaming engineer to build your website or vice-versa.

If we were talking about a 3D application where you need to know the ins and outs of baryocentric coordinates, vertex lists and effective monte carlo sampling I would agree.

But FCPX is a pretty mainstream app as far as development is concerned. It's all about maximizing the IO of a system and optimizing framebuffer manipulation for smooth playback. That's the exact same skillset that is in high demand for mobile systems in order to optimize their rendering of UIs. Windows 8 is all about "Fast and Fluid" + optimized video playback for movies. Jelly Bean was a huge push to improve rendering speed so that there were no framerate drops. iOS is constantly trying to improve their rendering engine. Overlays and video processing is one of the key factors that mobile OSes are judged on today. With HDMI output from phones becoming a hot item, even knowing how to write external monitoring is a key feature.

Well, maybe the lines of development aren't so far apart; I don't know enough about programming to say. But I think it's still supposition that there's a fluid exchange, and that every time a new version of iOS is being readied that FCPX development slows down.

I haven't seen anyone say with authority that that is actually happening. The only time that we've definitively heard about it from Apple was when OSX (I believe Snow Leopard) was pushed back to Fall so that iOS (2 or 3?) could get finished for Summer of that year.

Hey, it's Tuesday! FCPX releases go live on Tuesdays...

Marcus,

I wrote what I did mostly b/c I heard a few rumors that FCP progress was being hamstrung by developers getting pulled off FCP and moved to the iPhone. I didn't give it much credence until FCP-X was released and it looked only partially developed for professional use.

I also wonder how much value FCP-X really has to Apple? Put another way, how much could Apple get for FCP-X if sold to a third party?

The NLE market is brutal. I doubt that Vegas is helping Sony stem the loss of $ billions. Adobe has been surviving, but that's due to having a deep, well integrated product lineup that plays to the convergence of editing and finishing. Avid continues losing money and shedding employees.

And there are troubling trends in the industry: Lightworks is free or a $60/year subscription for the pro version and BMD is giving away Resolve Lite.

So I just think that there is probably more rationality surrounding Apple's current investment in FCP-X than there appears to be.

OK THEY DID IT!

I love options, downloading now.

Hmm not in Canada yet :P

Edit: wrong it is :)
Need 10.8.2.
For the folks running any ATTO with Sonnet gear, dont update yet.

Eric: what's wrong with ATTO & Sonnet on 10.8.2?

Eric: what's wrong with ATTO & Sonnet on 10.8.2?

Just reading the posts about folks having issues with ATTO cards and the Sonnet Echo Express Pro.
Its in the ROCKET section I do believe.
I dont have this issue with our Sonnet and Magma since we dont use any ATTO on them.
They reside in Mac Pro's.
Now with the FCPX update you need ML 10.8.2.

Maybe all fixed now.

That's right Eric. That issue has not been resolved yet, unfortunately.

I thought you were talking about a storage solution.

Mark,

Let me ask you this in all seriousness. "If you were fighting a grueling war with Smsung, HTC, Google, etc. for the mobile phone, portable OS and tablet markets, would you really allocate your best developers to work on a non-linear editing application?"

I think you would have to say "No."

And yet...
