  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - VERSION 2 - WHO WANTS ONE !!!!

this would be absolutely be THE best module out there, +100 also, this would make the epic sooooo much nicer and indeed give us the options to silence all the critique on the epic, please please red make this (if not possible in such a small design, it could be a tiny little bit thicker) but the combination of these things is epic!

I know RED "listens," but I hope for this idea they "listen fast!" I would buy one of these today if they were available for under $5k. I LOVE the Meizler, but I can buy a Scarlet as a 2nd/backup camera for less than the price of the Meizler Module! It would be awesome to have, but our regular needs on 90% of shoots are very similar to Mark's.

Great thoughts and mockups, Mark! Hope the "Meizler Mini" comes to life soon!

Sorry to be the party pooper but I think it's already to late. As much that I would love the Toia module, this thing won't be ready to ship till next spring.
The next NAB will be killing ground for RED and Arri. Arri will show their 4-6K Cam and I bet it will be much lighter, a bit cheaper and Prores&RAW out of the box. If RED doesn't show their new Cam (that won't ship till the end of 2013 the earliest) Arri will win a heck lot of new customers, even former RED owners. Arri will have all the mounts, ports, XLRs, bells and whistles ready in one box and ready to shoot. They will kick ass big time, count on it. And RED should bring their big gun or they will look like they don't have something new besides their new sensor, that will ship in masses by then.

So RED will probably bring out an all in one solution again. Very small but all in one. Perfect form factor. Very light etc.. So I'm not sure if they wanna spend to much time with modules, they should have brought out a long time ago. The time span to R&D such stuff is already over. I'm 100% sure they are all over their new gun by now. They have to. Arri is awake now....

And I'm a RED warrior like Toia
Peace out

Bjorn - you're right, it's hard to know. I seem to remember early on, when the Scarlet and Epic were to be a different width, one of the reasons for the adaptor was to allow the modules (which were narrower, like the Scarlet) to fit on to the Epic. It was a physical adaptation as much as anything. Now, of course, the cameras are the same but still, an adaptor. Presumably it does some electronic "interpretations" but I am curious to know as well.
This is exactly why this module should be a smart adapter; to give a reason for the adapter. The current one makes little sense now that the camera bodies of the Epic and Scarlet are essentially the same. It looks a bit like an afterthought. So the solution is either to make a new Epic body that can take the quick attach modules directly, or the adapter needs to have a reason to exist. By giving it the missing functions of a second, much needed EVF/LCD output and proper XLRs for channel 1&2 audio, it starts to make sense again as you could detach it to make a lighter camera when you needed it. Most of the time however, you'd want it attached.

Now whether it's possible to even have all that hardware in such a small adapter to include a proxy module as well - including electronics - is another matter. How deep are XLR sockets and a card reader? I think everyone could use Mark's version 1 Pro Mini I/O. Not everyone needs the proxy module and wants to be forced to pay for it too. So maybe Red could consider creating both versions. A cheaper XLR/LCD/EVF connector version that finished off the camera (Mark's version 1), and this version 2 with included proxy module for those that need it.

Personally, I much preferred both version 1 modules; the Pro Mini I/O "smart" adapter, and the separate, and small proxy module. I think that combo makes more fiscal and physical size sense than forcing everyone to take both in one larger module.

Lets hope your wrong... but you maybe right. The future tells this story time and time again of empires toppling over time.
This module will save EPIC in the short term for sure.... but they need to launch it big and soon. (only if Arri or canon or someone else comes out with a SMALL bodied 4k / RAW / PRO RES - high frame rate combo...) If they don't .. then we are safe. for a little time more.
At the end of the day, if google, apple, blackmagic, arri, Canon or coke a cola... bought out a camera that could out shine the EPIC in frames rates, RAW / PRO RES, keep it small in size and had amazing battery life. I'd jump ship in a second.

Loyalty only comes when a manufacture is loyal to our expectations... So far RED have done this for me and this is why I'm still here.

I know RED are listening, but their silence is starting to scare me off the reservation.

Not a single useful module

Tim,I hope very much your wrong. I hope Dragon will prove to be a real asset in the battle against the Tsunami of new gear arriving. The modular nature of The Epic still means it has the potential to be truly competitive. The issue is the module potential is yet to be realised. The Pro I/O module simply adds to the Epic most of the features I would expect a camera to have. The SSD module is kinda handy but no real advantage over the side SSD module. The heavy battery module for me offers no real advantage over a simple Red brick battery. The Meizler or "Hollywood" module offers a bundled suite of top end features that will suit the big boys but at over $20,000 to realise its potential (excluding lens control) I will probably have to pass. Where are the lightweight cost effective modules that we could add to the camera as needed. A proxy recorder, ability to use the EVF and LCD and a couple extra I/O ports??? This is a camera already 18 months into its product cycle and I do not have the camera set up as I need. It has been said that a standalone box Proxy module is due early next year but this is now 2 years into the Epics life.:frown5:I would pretty pissed and suprised if Red abandoned the Epic at the next NAB and came out with an "all in one solution" and a whole new camera. The main reason I chose Epic over Alexa was not that it is a better camera but that it would serve an owner/operator by being obsolescent resistant and a better ROI. The module concept should be able to propel the Epic forward for years yet but I am yet to see a single useful Module (for my use.)

Heh, for all we know the silence is because there's a storm on the horizon...

Christmas is soon isn't it?

I'm curious though as to why the bigger modules have shipped but the smaller +1 mod hasn't...

Who knows though, RED no doubt has something awesome as usual lined up for NAB 2013, I'm smelling lenses and some awesome gear in the kitchen

Would love to buy this module if it equals the Pix features (minus the monitor) and comes in a SMALL Red form factor!!
I really want to keep my 15mm LW set-up!

Praying for:
- TC master clock
- TC In
- TC Out + ability to send master TC wirelessly to the the 744t. (Very cool for doc work, when the 744t is triggered by the camera...)
- 2 XLR inputs
- 1 XLR output
- EVF/LCD port
- ability to monitor pro-res/DNxHD recording on 5" touch LCD

Ok, maybe I'm day dreaming too much...

+1 for keeping the camera small and versatile. The TOIA module would be something I could leave on the Epic year-round, whereas most of the other modules would only find occasional use. A module that's roughly this size, adding those specific few bits of functionality that the camera really could use (proxy recording, XLR inputs, second LCD/EVF port, and yes, another SDI out would be a welcome addition) would be almost as significant as the sensor upgrade in my opinion. It's amazing how many of the gripes I hear from camera/sound people have to do with these elements.

I for one celebrate the size of the camera and the versatility it grants me...but these additions would be a no-brainer for me.

The technology for new modules is already here in the Meizler, all they need now is to slice it with new casings. I'm sure it's not the hardest thing to create.

I'm pretty sure next NAB will show Red having a whole bunch of modules, the new sensor, and maybe even a Monstro brain.
They need to stay ahead of Arri.

I really hope this module become reality as in Marks pictures. I have over and over again lost customers because they are afraid of the raw format and the workflow. If you say, "Prores" or "DNxHD" it's coolt, but "raw" they run for the hills.

... and of course if we get XLR then it's a haleluja moment :)

i really hope red is quicker with this module than "begin next year", that feels more like march 2013, that would be way to late. Everyday day missing this option is losing work to alexa's and damaging red reputation. I really hope the manage to get this one out as soon a possible (say within 1-2 months from now, that would help ALOT of people, but also red self

+1 for this module. The loss of the ability to use 15mm light weight rods and the growth in size and weight of the Meizler module along with the total price with accessories is cause for second thoughts in my case.

Toia mod

Toia mod

Yes, There is a lot in this new module that people don't need that increases the price out of many Red owners budget. Id venture to guess if Red can pull off A Toia Module at a reasonable cost (say 3-4k) that it would immediately become the most popular module and might sell to 70-80% of everybody who owns a Epic or a Scarlett (my WAG). Not to mention how many new buyers would step in from the side lines to buy cameras because they have not wanted to deal with Raw recording.

This idea is no-brainer, and hopefully in the works.

Used our PRo I/o all day today. 2 XLR's in and 3 monitors out...

I can tell you this much... just doing that make the pro IO hot like a stove. We where running on the AC adapter, but Im not kidding the processing that goes on in there must be quite intense and that is only scaling images and such.I do not know how short the batteries would last but I can not imagine they would last long since it uses so much energy. so if you guys want all your requests in one little unit I think the camera would melt should probably add a little fan in your request... just saying.
