here are some classic comments i've had from crews using my camera.
"i really wanted to hate this camera but i love it". -a 2nd camera assistant.
"why don't film cameras have top bars" - 3 different DOPs

This became an expression on 2 sets:

"How's the footage?"
Response: "Awesome."

It was like something from a pep rally.

On the second day we started writing "Awesome" on the slate in the space for 'roll'.

One of the post houses here told me they were ready for Red now that they've setup their new 16 drive raids to handle uncompressed 4K... I nearly cried as I told them that I just edited some Red footage on a laptop...

"So, that's the RED huh? Wow!, can I touch it?"

Client points at the RED as I'm setting it on a tripod... "What the fuck is that?"

Actually I had one of my clients looking at footage on his computer in redcine with me. Footage was 3k with a zoom lens. Even wide open aperture, it was still reasonably sharp. Plenty for the HD finish, overkill for the web delivery that was more likely. I'm used to people who shoot on s16, some 35mm, lots of HD guys.

Me; "See? Look how sharp that is."
Him; "What the fuck? Thats not sharp at all! Do you call that sharp?"

He calls over his assistant, they agree.

Him; "It'll work, but that isnt sharp at all"

After some arguing, I get to the problem. His primary medium is his H3D with a 39 Mpxl digital back. He's seen into the Eye of God and knows what sharp is. Sharpness that lets you read your own wristwatch by the catch light in the model's eye. Red is beautiful, but we're only halfway up the mountain brothas'

"Did you get it?"

(after reviewing the shot already) "Yea, we got the crap out of it. No, you can't see it because you're not camera."

I had a post meeting on a commercial where the producer wanted to shoot F23 but was practically forced to shoot RED by the company owner. First hour on set;

Producer: "I'm here cause of you so this shit better work"! Remember, I have the F23 on backup just in case"

One hour later after seeing the first shots playing in REDCINE with basic color tweaks.

Producer: "This looks great, how many backups have you made?

Me: 5

Producer: "Okay, I can relax now.

She became my best friend on set the next 3 days.

I am flying out with the RED in backpack from Regan International in DC
My backpack 43lb pretending that it is just 10lb

Two young security guys inspecting luggage at the x-ray machines.
Is this the underwater camera?
Not quite, I answered.

The second guy comes closer, looks at my bag,
aaaa...this is this new camera, whatchamacallit....RED

A local AC worked on a low budget feature recently, first time using the RED.

He really enjoyed it, now when he comes in to prep a film job he asks now if it's 4K or 2K.

He says he also going to make shirts that say "Initializing ..." on the back. I know I would want one.

On most shoots people don't care. That's the best compliment I think. If you know how to light you know how to light, no matter the camera. Generally, they are inclined to like it because it's so cheap, that's the major selling point (let's not kid oursleves).

"The camera works great!" "The picture is awesome!" "The workflow sucks!"
