Why doesn't the RED STATION REDMAG have a Thunderbolt port? e-Sata is not in any Mac that I'm aware of. I'm not complaining since I use PCs, just curious as Jim has stated he's always been an Apple fanboy.

Supposedly it'll be out eventually, for now the USB3 redmag or esata is our best options for speed... both of which can be added by a PCI card to the "BRAND NEW" (2010) Mac Pro!

Thanks Brian.

Johnny, we've been doing the same but I find it pretty cumbersome. Mac's don't have a physical eject button so whenever I disconnect a drive to go to the next location, I always end up pulling the card out or ejecting it. Have you had a similar problem?

My practice now is to eject the drives and the card on the computer and then remove the card, then the cables. T-bolt or USB 3 you could just eject and go, not to mention the cables aren't as stiff and immoveable as eSATA with speeds much faster the FW800 (plus only 1 port, once you daisy chain that transfer rate suffers).

We've been doing it this way for about 3 years as well and don't get me wrong it works, but personally I have been eagerly awaiting a better solution.

Yes...how many times i can remember touching or bumping the e-sata cable and it disconnects....BUT, i can't see an easy solution here. In fact i've been talking to Rick at MacGurus who makes hot-swappable bays that i use in my edit bay....Problem is if you are running more than a few devices....then you need port multipliers....so no new boards to support a T-bolt daisy chain...BUT, you can run from a Sonnet chasis your 4x Esata card 2 or 4 connections...that is connected via T-bolt to your macbook pro....Then the use the nicer form fitting E-sata cables out to your E-sata devices....of course connect then via e-sata to your Red device. then i think you can run up to 6gb/s on your HDD's via e-sata.....Anyway, i agree a whole line of T-bold enabled RED devices---Redrocket card would be my first choice--smaller/compact and comes in a small portable enclosure w/t-bolt; usb3 & esata connectivity....to daisy chain new and legacy devices. Sure would make for more portable/faster work. That all said, the Sonnet enclosure is already there.... http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpresschassis.html
And along with their t-bolt express 34 device....very nice setup. I've ordered most of this already and awaiting to try it all out.....fingers crossed that this now replaces my MacPro tower.

....well, nothing really very revealing other than "stay tuned" till NEXT YEAR. But, i'm sure they will have something smashing. BUT an email like that just says nothing and a bunch of hot air. That said, i clicked buy now on the new retina model....too bad it's the old I7 chip....but the pieces around it are nice.

Please lets keep Red focused on doing what only they can do... and Red have already made loads of download options.

2 esata (not great with Promise TB on same bus)

8 esata ports (via 2 fan outs)

there are loads of options and TB is a bitch!!

What do you mean in terms of the Peg and Lacie not being great on the same bus? I

ve been running the Lacie down the chain from my R4 and its working great. Faster it seems than the drives running out of either my exp34 slot or the sonnet exp34 adapter.

am I cruising for a bruisin?

That is very promising you say that... We did some hard testing 6-8 weeks ago and when we transfered over approx 100gigs to the Promise (R6 12tb not the R4) it would crap out and the promise would freeze up... So we now only use the Lacie without the promise (either a Lacie TB drive or a Gspeed Q on Esata)

Please if you get a chance copy 1/4 TB onto it? If that works I will retest next week (when I have the Lacie back)

thanks

Michael

I just noticed the specs on the Lacie--it's only 3gb/s.....too bad. I went instead with the small t-bolt box that holds dual express 34 card the Pro2 version and it's rated at 6gb/s....a little finicky as many know using express 34 with e-sata, but i'll sacrifice that for the extra speed.

"don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year."

At which point, the existing Mac Pros will be three years behind the times. Ouch.

Yeah because they're such terribly slow, out-dated and unusable machines now... lol

My 2008 Mac Pro is running perfectly and I use it every single day. It's over 4 years old, man... Believe me, as much as I love having the latest and greatest, this computer still does everything I need it to, and does it quickly at that.

Might be worth noting that the speed of the SSDs available currently doesn't warrant Thunderbolt.

I just ordered a USB3 RedMag... it flies. Maxxes out at around the same speed as eSata used to (if not slightly faster). Bus powered too!

<< Very happy.
