  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There IS a new Mac Pro

new processors and memory, no thunderbolt, no usb 3.0. That's normal, mac pros are usually announced in January

the fact that they did a upgrade, even minor means they are continuing the mac pro line. we should be expecting thunderbolt, pci express 3.0, usb 3.0, 16 cores, and sata 6 gb on the next iteration. it's disappointing that it can't be now, but I'm sure there is a lot to work out to get those specs stable. I have confidence that it def is coming though.

It looks like Kilgroe was right.

dude without thunderbolt/usb3 its like i might as well wait for the next model...see you in 2017 lol...

You're right 2 years isn't a long time between updates, i'm sure their working hard behind the scenes on things like thunderbolt integration and PCI 3.0 and maybe even a new chassis. I mean that can't be easy. Processor bump to an obsolete machine is a great option while we wait another indefinate amount of time for the *real* update. Lets hope January, shift that expectation forward. Thanks Apple, you rock ;)

It's infuriating to watch a company as put-together as Apple have a lineup of products where the "higher up" you go, the more backwards you have to trek for connectibility. Pretty much the ONLY people that could effectively use Thunderbolt currently are Video people on the higher end. The workstation tailor made for them still (STILL!) lacks Thunderbolt.

It would be like Red making the Scarlet able to use 256GB SSD drives, but the Epic only being capable of using 16GB CF cards. It stops to be impressive if you can pump out larger images at higher framerates if you can't get the information into or out of the machine in less time.

This is so frustrating for business owners. Thunderbolt is such a revolutionary technology, to not have it on the Mac Pro is maddening. They should not have updated the machine without it.

Be careful what you read. There seems to be confusion for a few people with the Apple updates.

There is an old CPU called the E5XXX and the new CPU's called E5-XXXX

Don't mistake the two versions. The Mac Pro is still the old version, old chipset, old everything.

Agreed. It only makes sense. Like Kilgore explained, CPU's are very upgrade-able on current motherboards

It looks like Kilgroe was right.

He often is on this stuff... But can someone tell me if they have dropped a x16 slot? They only list 3 now (1x16 and 2x4). I Need to replace one macpro that is stuffed full and often has to be opened up due to having only 4 slots. Mr K?

From apple on the new macpro

Three open full-length PCI Express expansion slots
One PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot
Two PCI Express 2.0 x4 slots
All slots provide mechanical support for 16-lane cards
300W combined maximum for all PCI Express slots

Three open slots four total (The graphics card takes one slot).

Isn't this pretty blatantly just Apple trying to move more people out of buying their workstations?

I mean we all know they can build whatever they please, they are the most highly resourced tech company on the planet. Look at the new Retina Macbook Pro, it is a marvel of engineering. Probably the coolest computer ever built. And clearly the direction they want everyone going in. Putting that out there and at the same time giving the Mac Pro the worst update in the history of computers is a strategic choice. It feels like a slap in the face, and its intended to be. For whatever reason discontinuing the Mac Pro hasn't happened yet. It'd be a fairly unpopular decision with a lot of people, who they still want as customers for their other products. But if 6 months from now they can say "Well we updated the Mac Pro and it was the worse selling computer in our companies history, we HAD to cut it." Well then... who could blame them?

I think this is Apple killing the Mac Pro Line. Moving to e5 would have been too much effort for them. They'll just stick with this for 2 years.

If I understand what Jeff Kilgroe has said (and he does seems to know of what he speaks), there are no processors yet available to upgrade the Mac Pros; they are likely to come later this year. So what is Apple to do? Basically, just evolve the specs a little while they are waiting.

I don't know, it just seems like folks want an upgrade but no one is very specific about what they expect it to be.
