  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There IS a new Mac Pro

The reason Apple is still pushing old gear is that people keep buying the old gear. If you don't like it, go with something else. Go back to windows. Don't just sit here and complain about it all day.

If I understand what Jeff Kilgroe has said (and he does seems to know of what he speaks), there are no processors yet available to upgrade the Mac Pros; they are likely to come later this year. So what is Apple to do? Basically, just evolve the specs a little while they are waiting.

I don't know, it just seems like folks want an upgrade but no one is very specific about what they expect it to be.

Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 for more IO options and speed would be an amazing bump in specs, even if the processor, RAM, and storage were unchanged. IO is a huge hurdle, especially with all the DATA that we are pushing back and forth.

specifics:
thunderbolt ( should have been done when apple laptops got them)
usb 3.0 ( should have been done when PC's got them)
more pci slots (should have kept up with offerings from PC)

now when i say "should have" I don't mean to tell apple what to do, they know how to make money. I just mean that they should if they want to be seen as technologically forward thinking and competitive in the pro market.

WTF????

On the We Want a New Macpro
New Mac Pros are on the store?!?
(Yes that's a question mark)

Someone apparently got a reply back from Tim Cook:

Frans-Jozef Stapelbroek Got an email back:

Franz,

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn't have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today's event, don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

We've been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features.

We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.

How's this for specific:

1. We want the same CPUs that you can find in PC workstations currently.
2. We want the same Graphics cards that you can find in PC workstations currently.
3. Additional expansion slots and RAM slots would be nice (like what current PC workstations have)
4. USB3 would be nice.
5. Thunderbolt would be nice.

Terry, this is a company with more cash reserve than the US government and you are going to defend them by saying their hands are tied because some processors aren't available?

If they had any desire at all to offer a relevant product what's stopping them from putting in Thunderbolt, USB 3, SATA 3, New graphics cards, Better speakers, Bluetooth 4.0, WIFI, an SD card reader? Or maybe get really crazy and go with a different hard drive bay layout allowing both 2.5'' and 3.5'' drives and more of them, or a totally new chassis design with maybe more efficient cooling, better acoustic properties. Or even maybe they could come up with something none of us have even thought of but would totally appreciate once we had it? There are plenty of things they can implement to make the machine significantly better than it is besides on the processor end.

Apple have the best designers on the planet and virtually infinite resources. They claim to be innovators and the makers of great products but this is a machine that basically hasn't changed in more than a decade. Whats the point of more cores and faster processors when the rest of the system is trapped in the past? They can do better. They just have chosen not to. Why defend them?

Careful what you wish for ;o) As many of us phase FCP out, we'll be turning to Avid and/or Adobe, which both run on PC. Now that Apple has, at least for the foreseeable future, shown it's hand, the only piece of the puzzle missing for major exodus is Thunderbolt on PC. I saw it running on a ThinkPad @ NAB so no doubt the race is on @ HP. As much as I like my Apple products, only my MP makes me money so I've got no quarrels switching platforms... Once again. Funny how history repeats itself.

really like apple hardware, software, and design sense. not so big on the prices, but that's not the point anymore... it's power.

seriously guys... time to make professional decisions. i highly recommend a migration.

if you're so blind to think that i'm hating on macs, feel free to follow along with the rest of the herd over the cliff. i care about this community and i'd like to see you guys making wise decisions, otherwise i wouldn't waste my time with this silliness... buy/build a better machine, boys - you may even still be able to run osx if that's what you really want. if you desperately need a new machine (probably everybody here hugging their mac pros), there are reliable options right now that keep getting better. don't get caught looking foolish.

if you need help or advice send me a message and i'll do what i can, though i'm sure there are plenty of techies that are even more knowledgeable that would be willing to help those that feel stuck right now.

I like Mac's and PC's. I just go with the one that fits my needs at the time. In one of my DIT setups I am pretty heavily invested in MAC, but am thinking about going with PC on the next one.... Choices, choices...

Intel was very late with the sandybridge xeons , they just came out in april and aren't shipping in any volume. I'm betting apple will skip sandybridge and go straight to ivy bridge xeons which are due out this year and have a chipset that supports usb3 and thunderbolt natively.

This is part of Apple's new green policy. The Mac Pros are now 100% recycled...
