Nothing wrong with my sidehandle either.

If RED do an update, i'd suspect there'll be an upgrade offer, as with the Bomb EVF.

On my side handle Menu wheel popped out in first couple days. I had to send it to fix it and it was broken again within next couple weeks. It was not manhandled and camera has nice and protective large Storm case. I think it is very easy to break that plastic menu wheel.
I never use it though so I just taped it over. I also always disable all buttons on side handle as it is too easy to unintentionally press them while picking up camera.
I would love new one to have mechanical switch that disables all functions and enables them when that switch is moved to "enable" position. Otherwise just dumb side handle works for me best.

now that they make a rear mount ssd. i would love a totally reversed sidehandle so i can run a handle on each side of camera. Or even just a dummy one on left side. that would be awesome for super lightweight handheld stuff.

Saw this on v1.
Not on the new ones.

I'd like to see a way to make the side handle work with my clutch. I'm thinking a plate that covers the side where the handle goes, but has pins that convert the interface to lemo. Then another plate that can go on the side handle and connect it in place of the right handle on the clutch. Put the lemo in that side, and control the camera, as well as start stop and auto focus without removing a hand from the clutch.

I've had this idea for awhile now. I've been meaning to photoshop it up, but haven't had the time.

My Side Handle works perfectly.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I remember when it was proposed that there would be an especially severe price increase for the side handle ($900 to $1700 or something like that, if I recall correctly) there was a lot of discussion. I asked if there was any plan for a cheap 'dumb' side handle which had just a battery compartment and record button, and Jim replied that such an item was 'possible':

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?60950-Significant-Update&p=790708&viewfull=1#post790708

Of course he also said an aluminum Canon mount was 'impossible' - go figure!

Am I missing something- is there a difference between a dumb side handle and the outrigger handle, or do you mean a handle that just holds a battery. Also aren't the side handle buttons addressable in the menu? Couldn't you just turn them off?

Jason,

Excellent idea!

Adding to your concept:
If you do a Photoshop render, what would you think of machining a number of 1/4-20's in new handle cover plate so that you could attach a SWAT rail adapter or spinner from the RED Store - or one of the rosette plates from Wooden Camera...

In my case the battery compartment doesn't hold the batteries properly. I've seen it everywhere. In my case it works 80% of the times, but after a while it won't hold the battery anymore and won;t let me close the compartment. The only way to make it work is to bend again the red plastic until it will holds the battery. But how many times I can do this until it breaks? A friend of mine during a shoot had the same problem but couldnt make it to work for over 15 minutes no matter what he tried. The only solution was to get rid of the red plastic!!

I contacted red support and I was told to send it in for evaluation.( I waited so long for the sidehandle and brand new I had that problem) It was quite disappointing as I was hoping to hear that there is a solution to what I believe is a very common problem that I have read in the forums (I have 4 friends with epic and scarlets and only 1 out 4 doesn't have that problem)I wish Red would come up with an answer to this. They didn;t even aknowledege the problem. I'd hate to send the Sidehandle back to red, wait for a long time and get it back with the same red plastic that most likely with time will start behaving the same way.

Sorry if I come off a bit bitter, but I have to say that I love using the sidehandle but the battery compartment , pretty much sucks.
