  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

120fps looks okay :)

OK so what am I missing? Where do we get the firmware for doing 1k @120? I don't see it anywhere on the beta or release sites.

Everything is going to be Michael Bay @ 1k for me now. It's too much fun... ;)

Seriously though, I'm loving it. As someone with a background in animation, it's great for reference. I'm going to see if it can be used anywhere alongside 4k footage. Could be an interesting stylistic mix and match.

Anyway, back to making things teal and orange. Megan! put that camera down.

Hm... That's kinda funny

5k @ 24fps was never an advertices xpec on the Scarlet, if memory serves me slightly not too bad.
1k @ 120 was

Epic is the cam you're asking about, methinks...

Well, technically, the Scarlet S35 was going to be able to shoot 24fps at 5k. Then RED decided, hey what the hell, lets move it to the Epic family and call it Epic - S. Well, since then they decided that it was too much like the Epic, and changed it back down to the Scarlet - X.

When the Scarlet was released, people were still trying to figure out if the Epic-S was coming, and Jim said he thought they understood the Scarlet-X replaced it..

So technically, 5K at 24fps was a spec at one point. :)

I understand; that'd be AWESOME. It would never happen, and it takes a special kind of self-entitlement to expect this to just happen. But who doesn't want something for nothing?

Ok, so no one is actually enthusiastic about 5K WS for Scarlet - I'll try to make it more clear. As a post-production guy I know - people like me always fight for assets quality and once we have "safety margins" with extra-pixels - we know that perfect results would be delivered. Nothing you can do on post with upscaling stuff - it'll be crap anyway - just nice and interesting looking crap, not the image you want to deliver for a client. In real world 4K pipeline - it is just a baby. Everything in DI world is 2K this days - maximum 2.5 K. This is why we have nice and shiny attempts to jump on this "beyond HD" train. And it will be more soon. No other camera spoken here, I know :)))

This is WHY RED is FN amazing! It is cool to have safety margins! We have great potential of getting crystal clear 2K delivery! We can easily get rid of undesired noise and grain and get it look the way we want! Less hassle with set extensions and everything. I can put down thousands of reasons for RED. And even if margins are not that big - we have them anyway! This is why EPIC is so amazing. Because shooting 5K we can deliver crystal clear 4K image. For world wide distribution. Scarlet is definitely beyond HD camera this days. And it is great when you deliver 1080P for a client or even beyond. It is even more than Cineon 2.5K. Nothing can stop Scarlet from being serious production tool for major features.

But if we talking about technology and standard improvements, about changing things on industry level, about taking huge advantage on competitors - having 5K usable resolution on this camera will help (and will force) the entire industry to make a giant leap with switching production and post-production pipeline from 1080P/2K to 4K widely. And it will make a much bigger demand for tools like this. LIKE RED. BIgger demand on faster computers (unless someone think they can make everyone happy with nice and fancy 9inch smartphone :), bigger storage, more advanced software, retina display with a size of your living room wall and much more. It is just an idea. Ideas like this just a century ago made two guys think they could fly, when everyones thought they were crazy. Ideas like this made two other brothers across the ocean they could create lots of fun and entertain people with filming 24 frames per second and projecting it back to silver screen, instead of resting in daguerreotype epoch.

Ideas like that has inspired fashion industry tycoon to build the best digital cinema camera in known universe.

i'm sorry i don't share your exitement. to me this looks ridiculously bad compared to what RED wants themselves to be and accomplishes on so many levels (PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL CINEMA) . but my 24mm looks like a 200mm. impossible to get any decent wideangle, everything is grainy and soft. that is just gimmiky, not bad for fun, but bad for "professional". For cheap professional slowmotion the FS700 seems to be the answer here.
Everything else (4K, etc..) butter & gravy!

Very glad for those who will get some value out of this.

But it will be 48fps 3K for me till Dragon I think.

:violin:

REALLY wish I could afford an epic.

One day...

Absolutely.
1K resolution useless. Quality 120fr penalty ... For this, as there is HeroGoPro.
shame they did not launch at the time the EpicS
However ScarletX is perfect in 4K, 3K and even 2K

Here's a quick test I shot yesterday mixing 4K HD, 3K HD and 1K HD material in a 720p project. 4K HD was shot at 25, 3K HD at 48 and 1K HD at 89 fps.

The shutter speed is wrong on more than a few shots and I didn't really pick the sharpest 1K shots for the edit, since I was more interested in the motion. A few of the 1K shots are just out of focus soft. But after shooting this test I personally wouldn't have any problems using 1K HD material in a 720p or SD project.

You do want to go to 3:1 for 1K, 8:1 was pretty mushy.

I saw the old red one 120fps in 2K and it looks way better.....so how about 120fps or more for the scarlet in 2K?

Hm... Buy a R1?

The Scarlet had some announced specs, which it is now meeting. And they look good.

Asking for "more than announced" as to fps, is likely not going to happen. and if it happens, not to THAT extent.

Count your blessings. The scarlet is a fanntastic cam!

+1...
