In this video a guy compares the F3 vs the Scarlet. He shows a skin test against a colored wall. He says the wall on the F3 is completely accurate while on the Epic test the wall went magenta color. He was using redcolor3/redgamma3. I don't understand why the F3 is more accurate with flesh tones and color. I thought red color fixed all this? Watch the video and let me know what you think. Below is a conclusion he made between the two cameras.

" Case in point, in the skin tone test you just watched, the color of the wall in the F3 footage is completely accurate. Thats exactly what my wall looks like, but looks quite magenta in the RED footage. If I fight the magenta with a bit of green, the skin tone gets thrown out of whack. This green/magenta balancing act is a definite pitfall of the RED, even with REDColor3."

Can you explain the magenta wall color. He said he tried correcting it and it would throw the skin out of whack. Im a Epic owner and not downing red at all, just confused.

I just looked at both videos and it is obvious to me that the Scarlet/EPIC hasn't been white balanced properly. If you want to compare skin tones then both cameras should be properly white balanced.

A lot of people forget the importance of this and just dial in a kelvin amount. I had someone else complain to me about magenta skin tones and when I told them to put a white balance card in front of the subject and hit the white balance button on the EPIC they were amazed.

Pretty obvious to me but hey I have shot on an ENG camera for most of my career and got into the film side of things when the RED ONE came out.

If you are an Epic owner, why are you confused?
Are you having issues with color?

WB.

I agree the Scarlet hasn't been WB'd correctly, as well as that there may need to be a blackbalence performed. I shoot 800 IOS material all the time with the Epics at 4K that look noiseless at 1080P from a Red Rocket.

This is the problem:

"The first portion of the test is a skin tone test, and the two images were brought to "neutral" to my eye."

That procedure will not produce consistent color, much less the kind of color accuracy required for side by side comparison. Any good test removes as much of the human element as possible. Color balancing by eye is the antithesis of that. Use a standard. Shoot a chip chart.

Start over with a grey scale and color chart up front. The pillow in the background isn't white in either shot.

Unfortunately DRX doesn't work with the ROCKET!

Comparing the F3 to the Epic is a waste of time. They are completely different cameras that do completely different things. That being said, as some one who has shot a shit ton on both, the Epic beats the F3 in every way there is to be beat.

So the white balance button you reference is the user config button for the side handle called "activate WB"?

I've been adjusting kelvin manuall, no WB anymore. I thought they accomplished the same task. Also, I heard about some people WB with greyscale?

You can program any of the buttons to do it and I believe it is "calculate wb". It resides permanently in the advanced color menu, if you don't wish to program a button. It calculates Kelvin and tint.

Ask David Fincher if he would make a movie with a F3 !!!

The test of timur is Way stupid !

It could be dangerous to say stupid things in front of a lot of pro , they ll definitely look at you as an amateur !!!

Epic is a professional camera used for Morpheus, the girl with dragon tatoo, Peter Jackson movies..............

The F3 does not run in the same league as the Epic at all, it s an ok camera for filmimg what s going behind the film , the crew and so on , but not to make the movie !!!
