  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SHOULDER MOUNT SYSTEM TO PULL FOCUS DIRECTLY ON LENS!

You can't really tell from just this one pic, but I can adjust everything to make it so that I have easy access to focus ring with left hand.

I'll post better photos later this week.

This picture makes me wish I was an alchemist.

the camera sits on the shoulder unlike most configurations i see where the camera is in front of you.
This rig is quite balanced actually. Everyone who tried it at the Red Open House really liked how balanced it was.

Looks mighty front heavy! :scared:

Actually it is not that heavy at all. All parts I used are light weight for that set-up even mattebox and FF. My previous shoulder systems used a rod mounted brick battery as a counter balance weight and I can use that solution if I need. However, it is much lighter than most film cameras I hold and even lighter than broadcasting eng cameras.
I agree if the rig gets heavier then i will avoid the front heavy configuration. I just put together to see how I can mount a Scarlet on a shoulder mount system, and i am very happy with the results, mainly due to the Scarlet's light weight.

Interesting rig Tonaci. I see...you're adding the touch screen lcd to change you setting between the shot. The main problem I found is that the majority of shoulder mount system are build for you to use your two hands to stabilize it and as soon as you're taking off you're hand of one grip, you're feeling it in the composition and that sucks...

Is you're system let you do the focus without consequence in the shot?

In fact, when I'm filming, I LOVE to have always my hand on my lens. I can find stability on my lens and pull focus in a easy way. I always find this harder to do this on a follow focus and even more on a rig with two grips. I love the flexibility of the gorilla kit but it's not possible to use it with the red epic. Thanks to Phil Bloom who point this rig out to me 3 years ago.

Guillaume, I think what you're looking for is a rig that will let the Epic settle onto your shoulder, is balanced and comfortable, is stable with a low center-of-gravity, puts the lens in a good position for your left hand to stay on it for pulling focus, and where your right hand can hold a single handle and everything stays nice and steady and easy to manipulate. I like to shoot that way myself, which is why I developed my rig. I wish I could share it with everybody already, but will have to wait until NAB. :(

I don't understand the waiting until NAB thing. Why do companies have to wait until NAB to reveal something? If it's ready now or can be ready now, you're missing out on sales. While you're waiting, maybe customers can't wait and will just go and buy what's available now so they can use their cameras, which means they've spent their money and won't be able to buy your product anyway. You're potentially losing sales. And if you release something now, it doesn't mean you can't show it at NAB and draw even more attention.

FYI slightly oof topic - for those of you debating which shoulder mount rig - Ryan from Wooden Camera is working on a rig that he will have available by NAB. He makes great stuff at very reasonable prices, it might be worth waiting a bit if you have the time to see what he offers...

Do you experience this much? I find that more often companies are scrambling to get everything ready in time for NAB.

Hi Tonaci. Would you list out the parts you used for this great rig? I'm looking to build something similar. Thanks!

Absolutely. I'm on a shoot in Vietnam at the moment. Tomorrow I'll post up the list of items. =)
btw, on a side note.. Casey Green pointed out that it looks like a scorpion when you flip the rig by itself upside down hehe.

None of your rigs fit the non-arri height requirements for front rails on the Epic. It took me a ton of trial and error with various lift mounts to get a reasonable rig cobbled together. Redrock Micro gear won't really work until the assault plate is shipping.

Guillaume,

Using any of our shoulder mount systems you can rotate the grip so that your palm can rest on the grip itself and your fingers can focus via our micrFollowFocus. Take a look at the configuration here:

I've done this with systems from small DSLRs to the F3. Might be what you're looking for.

I don't know but you said we have to wait until NAB. To me that sounds like it's ready. Why wait? Sell now.

Hey Mike, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but manufacturing is a little more complicated than we'd wish sometimes. The nice thing for consumers who can wait a month is they'll have the opportunity to compare existing options with at least a few new ones. You'll see a lot of different philosophies of what a shoulder rig should be and have a better chance of finding one that suits you.

I think I got it. I have to wait for NAB next month. I'm sure i'm not the only one who wants a EPIC rig that you can pull focus directly on the lens. Not in a crazy way... :)

anyone find a good solution at NAB? looking to make the plunge soon.
