Has anyone seen this before? I'm getting this pattern on several frames. The footage looked fine in playback on the day, has anyone seen this before? is there any way to salvage the footage?

Looks like file corruption on the copy.
Do you have the media to make another copy or run redundead on?

Thanks Deanan, it was close but yes I still have it. I discovered the problem last night at 2am and my camera's about 2 hours away and started rolling at 7am this morning. I just talked to the guy I sent with the camera and stopped him from wiping the drive. He tested playback and the footage is still fine.

I was transferring them to 2 USB drives, one after the other, any idea why this would have happened on most of the footage? slow drives? too many external drives plugged in at once? (I had 4 plugged in, but the computer wasn't doing anything else during the first transfer)

I'm very relieved, but want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I had this happen a few times. The first time I was downloading of CF card and it needed to be reseated and it copied fine.

The other time was because as you said I was running too much off the bus power and there wasn't quite enough to serve everything that was plugged in.

naturally the lesson to be learned here is do a visual check of the footage and check sum before deleting it off the drive. Sounds like it was a close call you shouldn't have given the drive back untill you had cleared it as being good or resolved. that's way i ask for 3 drives minamam just in case i need to hold on to one.

Any update on a Windows based Redundead?
