  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X #308 - Newcastle, Australia

Jim, can you claim all the GST back if you're using the camera for 'personal use' as well or is it a percentage of how much you use it for paid jobs? Perhaps you can count personal use as research and training for professional applications?

@ Andrew I wouldn't even go there.

I would claim the whole lock stock & barrel as ligit. Your reason for buying the camera is to set up a business. If you dont have a business name register one it costs $80 or so then get an ABN. I can see it now "Be Gentle productions' . As long as your business makes some revenue you should be fine. Remember this doesn't just apply just to the camera but also computers, software, fuel, power, travel even movie tickets they all incur GST.

What Mike said. Any personal use is really just experience with the camera to better your professional skills.

Good times good times! Can't wait to get out shooting with you Brad!

And a warm G'day to all the other Aussie owners posting. I was planning on getting down to Melb in Feb, and was organising a bit of Scarlet user meet up, but not sure the work is going to come through now. But maybe a Sydney meet up could be on the cards? Anyone interested? Maybe set a date for March or even April hols, to allow a few more users to get their cameras?
As you probably already know Lliam - I would definitely be keen on a meetup! I think I'll be in the US for NAB in April so as long as it was before that it would be cool :)

I already have an ABN as a sole trader which I use for my freelance photography and video production. I also write a percentage of my computer off as a business expense on my income tax.

Hmm, I suppose I should do a bit more research into this to figure out how it works. I haven't even had to fill out Business Activity Statements yet because I don't earn enough on my ABN but I imagine I would have to if I were charging GST. Does anybody know of any good resources for learning about what the requirements are? I suppose I should start here: http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.aspx?doc=/content/20724.htm&page=5

Andrew, once you register for GST you then fill out a BAS every quarter. You pay any GST that you have collected, and get refunded any GST that you paid that quarter. If you pay more GST than you collect then you get a cheque from the tax office. If you collected more than you spent then you write them a cheque.

Incredibly straight forward and easy to sort out after the first one.

Again, you are not penalised since you charge the GST on top of your normal charges. The benefit is you get all the GST you pay on equipment, consumables and other expenses back in full.

They way to look at it Andrew is...... do you want to save $2,000 of the price of Scarlet (assuming you've spent about 20k).

If you do, sign up for the GST & start charging away. The only down side I can see is if you're dealing with general public direct which would raise your price to them by 10%. If your dealing business 2 business they don't care because they're claiming it as well.

Hey Brad congrats mate!! I have the younger sibling of 308... 307. You will love the Scarlet-X and although Iam no Aussie, I am keen on an "Australasian" meet up??.....what do you reckon Lliam ;)

Again congrats mate!

John, LOVE to have you over mate! I'll start a thread and post a proposed date (pre Nab Brad) and we'll see how we go.

Best

Lliam

Thanks for all the info, guys, I will definitely register. Hopefully there's no problem with claiming a purchase before I was registered? Unfortunately I do deal directly with the general public, predominantly, but that shouldn't be a huge problem.

Sorry, Brad, for hijacking your thread!

Pretty sure you can, as long as you register in the same quarter you are claiming, so unless you received your Scarlet in December I would say you are good. I would base it on the day you paid the GST to FedEx/DHL, not the day you filled your Red account.
